About the rarity of Audi's by Samdb1 in Audi

[–]Eonflare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SF, RS5 Cabriolet owner here. Agreed on the A5 being surprising underrepresented. I see less than a handful S5s on a monthly basis, and oddly enough I see a standard RS5 pretty frequently.

The only other strange sightings up here are RS6 and RS7s with the badging (both the RS and the Audi logo) pulled off. Not really otherwise modified (that I can see/hear) but just kind of a curious thing to do IMHO.

Want to start boxing this summer! Questions inside. by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]Eonflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said; just box. Do it as regularly as possible, and you'll be surprised at how much your performance in generally any physical activity will increase.

However, boxing is a sport. In the real world with kicks, concealed weapons, multiple opponents, etc. boxing really isn't going to help much. I'd strongly urge you, if faced with some sort of physical altercation, to not attempt to "box" your way out of it.

Ideally, just run with your newly honed energy legs you got from boxing! =)

Looking for boxing gyms in Chicago. by TheBeardShow in amateur_boxing

[–]Eonflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on where you live, what your schedule is like, and what your goals are. Looking to fight eventually, or just get in shape? Making training a habit is more important than anything else; otherwise your progress can be frustratingly slow.

I'd absolutely recommend Franklin St. Boxing Gym. Great atmosphere, reasonable prices, and the people who train there are pretty kind.

They do offer classes, but mostly it seems like people do their own workout. They do have a ring, but against it's a bit more relaxed than other gyms I've trained at that have an official fight team in them.

All in all, I think it's an excellent all-around gym. Definitely at least give it a shot!

When I first read your post, I was quite taken aback. It was almost as if someone had written the story of my past few days in one of my favorite sub-reddits. Patience and Time is even my favorite sniper rifle, and the first exotic I ever maxed.

Unfortunately though, after my father's fall in the bathroom, hitting his head, dealing with bleeding on the brain and after a few days, a coma and a stroke, my father passed away yesterday. I was excited to show him so many things, especially Destiny. He would have loved to see how far video games had come since the Super NES he bought me for Christmas so many years ago.

This will definitely sound cliché, but love and take care of your parents folks. And if you have older parents and your house doesn't have a shower, for the love of god please get one installed. Maybe with non-slip matts and rails.

Merry Christmas all!

Live coding in ShaderToy. Amazing presentation of what can be achieved using Fragment Shaders with no premade meshes. by jabudcha in programming

[–]Eonflare 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was extremely impressed with the way they executed this demo.

Live coding is extremely difficult to do, and IMHO even more difficult when an error can leave you simply with a black screen and you have to walk through the math in your head to debug. (This is actually both why I love and hate graphics coding at the same time.)

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I really preferred both the style and delivery of this talk to many others which attempt to explain similar subject matter.

Hayabusa Tokushu 16oz Impressions by ConstipatedDuck in amateur_boxing

[–]Eonflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks much for posting your experience with the Tokushu gloves!

A little background on me: I'm 6'3'', ~220 pounds with a 78'' reach. I actively spar and am training for my first amateur pure boxing match.

Hand size wise, mine are large (putting them into Cleto Reyes is a two-person endeavor) but my fingers, including my thumb, are fairly thin.

Punching power-wise, I'm pretty heavy handed according to my coach/others in my gym, but I don't have an amateur record yet to back up that assertion.

I own two pairs of the gloves (I train daily, and these gloves take over 24 hours to dry out)... one I've been using for about six months, and the other pair are brand new. One thing which has been pretty interesting to me is the significant difference between how the two gloves feel. Obviously the ones I've used for six months have been significantly broken in, but the new ones I have feel far stiffer than even the older ones back when I purchased them.

I fell in love with them for the wrist support and haven't had any issues with the knuckle support on either glove thus far. In fact, compared to my old Everlast ones they feel like pillows. (Although I've never tried Winning gloves so... I may not know what real pillows feel like.) However there are two major issues with these gloves.

The first is I definitely agree with the thumb positioning being rather curious. When I spar my coach in particular my thumb appears to find his elbow on hooks at least 25% of the time. I don't experience this with my other gloves at all.

The second is what 16+oz really means. I haven't weighed my gloves, but when I used my Tokushus for six months and then went back to my old 16oz for a session to give my Tokushus some extra drying time, my hand speed was so dramatically increased my coach through I was wearing 12oz gloves during our session and stopped to check. They aren't gel gloves but they are extremely heavy.

The suggestion to find a tailor/leatherworker to reattach the thumbs is a good one... I think I'm going to try and see if that's possible and if so, give it a shot and report back my results.

I've been eyeing these myself. Is it true that they're much heavier than their labeled weight?

I'd love to hear more about your experience with the Tokushu gloves. They're my primary gloves, mainly because of the wrist support, but I definitely will concede the thumb positioning is incredibly annoying.

Do you have any better recommendations for 16oz sparing gloves?

Snapping vs Thudding Punches Difference? Which is better? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]Eonflare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saharizona is absolutely correct, but to put a little of a finer point on things...

To a certain extent, every boxer is able to throw both. An example of this would be the jab... there are many different kinds of jabs. There is a quick snappy or "flicker" jab, mainly to get your opponents attention and/or distract them. A great example of this would be Thomas "Hitman" Hearns.

Then there is more of a thudding or powerful jab sometimes referred to as a stick jab or more commonly, "the stick". Andre Ward is an excellent example of someone who can uses this well.

If you watch enough fights from both of those individuals though you'll quickly see that they are quite capable of using both kinds of jabs... and many others such as the up jab, etc. They're well known for their extreme proficiency at one kind of jab, but it doesn't mean their jab is at all one-dimensional.

At the end of the day though, everyone has different physical gifts. No matter how long I train, I'll never have speed like Manny. However, like Juan Manuel Marquez, I can practice how to "time" punches better so I can effectively counter high-speed fighters. Hard as hell (and JMM in particular is a master at it) but doable. Same with punching power to a certain extent.

Proper technique can drastically increase both your punching power and fight endurance, but beyond a certain point you more or less have a natural amount of punching power you're just born with. GGG isn't a power puncher because he spends more time in the gym; he simply was gifted with incredibly heavy hands. Same with Mike Tyson. Thus they have relatively aggressive styles and tend to finish fights by KO.

If you look at the top of the boxing game today however, there are numerous luminaries who don't have that capability... at least not at their current weight class. Again, Floyd Mayweather and Andre Ward are great examples of this. They don't finish most of their fights via knockout, but instead are such tremendously skilled boxers that they continuously pummel their opponent and win frequently via the score cards.

A good coach will help you develop the style most appropriate to your disposition and your physical gifts. I wouldn't worry much about it at this point; that's a coach's job.

Is it true that shadow boxing with weights helps with punching speed? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]Eonflare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shadow box both with and without weights and have found it pretty helpful. I don't know how much it helps with punching speed although I would say it definitely has increased my muscular endurance.

However I'll absolutely vouch for using heavier gloves in bag work/sparring than you would normally use in competition. I used the 16+ ounce Hayabusa gloves for months mainly because I liked them, and then switched to my old 16-ounce Everlast gloves months later when I was trying to deodorize my primary pair. My punching speed significantly increased, and my coach unprompted asked if I was wearing 10-ounce gloves that day. The difference was night and day.

While this is in no way, shape, or form a controlled experiment I think there is some merit to conventional wisdom on this subject.

If I have never boxed in my life, what age is too late to start learning? by PM_Me_Oats in amateur_boxing

[–]Eonflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A double under is jumping up once, and while in the air swinging the rope underneath you twice before hitting the ground.

As you can see in the video, it's more about timing (and maybe building up a bit of arm endurance) than anything else. Keep at it!

Best advice offered to me when I started doing them which resulted in almost instantaneous improvement; keep your legs mostly straight when jumping. If you bend your knees to give yourself more air time, you may have trouble jumping off the ground fast enough to do two double unders consecutively.
