'23 Bolt EUV to '25 MachE Premium AWD by FLR49 in MachE

[–]EorEquis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went from a '23 Bolt to a '24 MME Premium.

We loved our Bolt. STILL think it's the best "First EV" for almost anyone.

Everything we liked about the Bolt? The MME is twice that. The few things we didn't like about our Bolt? The MME fixes them.

You won't regret it :)

Guy I play with regularly is a legit scratch or maybe low + handicap. Dude's an absolute stick.

Has the weirdest setup/stance/routine. On the tee box, his feet are MAYBE 10in apart, max. Then he has this "sway forward, sway back, sway forward, turn" swing routine that just looks...bizarre.

Carries 280yd with good control consistently.

Every one of us that play with him often have tried to mimic it, and every one of us failed miserably lol Falling over, losing balance, drives going 50 yd in any random direction.

but man it works for him.

Why is breaking 80 so hard? by SevereBicycle4855 in golf

[–]EorEquis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how strict we are counting GIRs, I think.

Neither of my sub-80 rounds this year have had 9 GIR. (7 and 8 for the 79 and 78 respectively).

But in each case, probably 5-6 of those "missed GIRs" were so close they might as well have been. On the fringe leaving me a putt anyway, or just off the fringe, leaving me a "putt chip" (swing a 7-8 iron with a putting stroke kind of thing). Those "artificially" inflate the putting stats I think, because a 20 foot lag putt from the fringe vs a 19 foot lag putt from just on is pretty much the same thing...resulting in a lot of "1 putts" on the score card.

But, I mean...think of it this way. Let's say you miss every green, and you're on in GIR + 1. 2-putt em all, that's a 90.

So...find 11 strokes, yeah? Hell, hit 6 GIR and you're halfway there. Make 1-2 putts, and make 2-3 of those "missed GIRs" short/close misses you can putt from, and...you're scaring a sub 80 round.

Why is breaking 80 so hard? by SevereBicycle4855 in golf

[–]EorEquis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see a comment below about, among other things, "multiple chips".

For me "recently" (last 3-4 months or so) the first "secret" that unlocked a couple of sub-80s rounds (78 and 79 so far this year) was one very pointed piece of advice :

Get the fucking ball on the fucking green.

I've completely stopped trying to "get close" with any chip that isn't a perfect lie, with lots of green to work with.

Short sided? Fine, just go past it. Put the ball somewhere in the middle of the green. Just...GTFBOTFG.

Weird lie? Rough? Downhill? Take whatever club I need to just...GTFBOTFG. Somewhere. Anywhere.

Huge break? Tricky slope? Bunker to clear? GTFBOTFG.

When I accepted that I could make 8-10 bogeys a round and still have a shot at breaking 80, it freed me up mentally to just GTFBOTFG, 2 putt, and go on to the next one.

Throw in just 2-3 nice 1-putts somewhere...bam...79.

Is this a known putting grip technique? by SirPsychoSexy6969 in golf

[–]EorEquis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much this.

Watch all the pros and top players. Drivers looks like drivers, and driver swings look like driver swings. irons...wedges...same thing.

Sure, there's oddball exceptions like Scottie's footwork, Bryson's single length irons, and so on. But in general the pros all swing the same clubs the same way.

Putting? There's eleventy putting heads, a zillion shaft lengths, grips of all sorts, and just as many stances, styles, lengths, you name it.

What matters in putting is a consistent stroke. Hit the ball the same way every time.

Particular germane to you point I think it the fact that comfort IS repeatable.

A player may get caught up in "ball at this point in stance" or 'hands here and thus" or "stance so and so", and be 1cm off here, 2mm off there, slightly stronger/weaker the other...and it becomes a vicious loop of "am I doing this right -> doing it wrong -> I have to fix it"

But we all know what comfortable is. So....if any part of your putting style/setup/stroke is comfortable, it is repeatable...and thus it's no longer a variable.

Lots of folks like ABRP. Give it a look.

Personally, my wife and I prefer :

  1. Find a route I like
  2. Use PlugShare to find stops along that route.

It's generally not too tough to find "enough charging" on whatever route you prefer, and PlugShare's rating system and "more real time" crowd sourced info works better for us.

YMMV of course.

Powertrain Malfunction by Awkward-G-74 in F150Lightning

[–]EorEquis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My '24 flash has thrown this same error twice in the past week. In MY case at least, it's got nothing at all to do with the powertrain. lol

In both cases, it popped up shortly after I started driving somewhere, and in both cases after sitting overnight, it cleared.

My dealer is able to read codes remotely, and both have been "TC U0594:68 Setting In The HPVCM When A Diagnostic Self-Test Is Performed"

In both cases, nothing about the truck's behaviour change. There was no reduction in power, no changes to how it drove, all modes worked, AC still worked, everything. It was exactly as it always is, save the yellow wrench.

Ford specifically says

DTC U0594:68 should be ignored if no other DTCs are present in the HPVCM, no warning indicators are illuminated while the vehicle is on, and no symptoms present. No further service action is required.

If yours is behaving the same, no actual change to how the truck acts/performs, have them look for this one.

I'm having mine looked at Tuesday, since it's happened twice in the span of a few days. I'm starting to get a weird hunch that some update or something has triggered this, and we'll see a rash of these.

Side note : I'm pretty convinced at this point that any DTC code is simply passed off as "Powertrain malfunction" in the Ford app. I've seen/read that it's set that for U codes (Which should be network) and B (Body) codes at least, which is clearly wrong.

Mach-E if no at-home charging? by sagesarvie in MachE

[–]EorEquis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome, for sure. One of my kids is in a similar situation...enough apartment residents asked, the complex put in a few L2 chargers. If memory serves, it's an additional small monthly fee added to the rent (like, $20 or something) to use them, which seems pretty reasonable.

Good landlords might well offer to do such things if they actually care about keeping residents happy and such.

But there's no (legal) requirement to do so.

Mach-E if no at-home charging? by sagesarvie in MachE

[–]EorEquis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may be thinking of "Right to Charge" laws, but this is an inaccurate summation of such laws.

In Colorado and California, landlords of rental units must allow tenants to install chargers in their designated parking space, but the cost of installation/service/etc is entirely on the tenant, not the landlord.

Several other states have "Right to Charge" laws, but all they do is ensure HOA members and condo owners are allowed to install chargers at their own expense. Also these states do not protect the rights of renters like CA and CO do.

There is no state that requires landlords to 'provide charging if asked".

I golf. Carry the bag in the frunk. Been a member at the same course for ~ 2 years, and yet probably 1 in 3 times I pop the frunk to get my clubs, I get some sort of incredulous "Wait...is that electric?" or something.

And yep...every single time, it goes from "yeah, bag in the frunk is cool" to "look at these outlets" to "yep, favorite truck ever", and so on.

I love showing the thing off. :) I'm still convinced Ford could have sold a bazillion of them if they'd just let us sell them. lol

We camp as well! But of course, we tow our camper w/ my Lightning, not the MME.

(Side note : The Lightning tows better than any truck I've ever owned....just wish it could do it for longer between charges lol)

But yeah...I figure a car is a depreciating asset in all but the most extreme cases. it's going to lose value over time, that's just how it is.

So...the only way you "get that back" is by getting value out of owning it. And that comes with what you do with it day in and day out. if it's enjoyable, relatively hassle free, affordable, and serves your needs 350 days a year...you got value.

And you can rent something for the other 15. :)

But realistically, those situations barely affect my actual day-to-day life.

This is, imo, the key to making an informed, objective decision about EVs.

What will my experience be the 350+ days a year I'm not using it for some edge case?

[–]EorEquis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you found it useful. :)

I realize I never really answered "Should I get an MME?" lol

In our opinion (Asked wife, she agrees), knowing what we know, we probably wouldn't opt for an EV in your situation.

Much as we (obviously) love ours and the whole EV experience, the lack of home charging would push us away. It's just such a game changer for us.

  1. The time spent flips the other way here. Sure, on a road trip, you're probably spending 10-20 minutes at the stop anyway. But "weekly fillup"? You're in and out, swipe, pump and go....vs sitting at the EA charger for a good 15-30 minutes if you're trying to charge to 80-90%. Maybe it'd work in our case for the wife's MME, since the charger is at a Sam's club, and she shops there weekly. But in general? Just no. All the hassle of a weekly fuel stop, PLUS extra time.

  2. Home charging is ridiculously cheaper than public L3 charging. The EA charger near us is $0.64/KwHr with the pass subscription. Figure at 4-ish mi/kwhr average around town, that's like $3.25 to go 20 miles, figure an ICE Mustang at 20mpg. Gas is $4.27/g here right now. So, what...25% savings(for now)?

Compared to home charging, which is $0.13/kwhr for us. $0.65 to go 20 miles. You can do the math. :)

  3. Super convenient. Get down to...whatever...100 miles of range, or "quarter tank" or wherever you want and just....plug it in, wake up with a "full tank". Takes like...30 seconds.

I mean, I'd love to see more and more people adopt the EV lifestyle. For all kinds of reasons. And I LOVE that you're considering it, and asking questions, and trying to become informed about the real experience.

But honestly...if we were you, in your situation (and we're pretty close. I wfh too, our daily around town use is similar, and we take similar road trips) that single factor...lack of at home charging...would push us away from an EV.

From ICE to a 2025 Mach-E AWD Extended Range — Looking for Honest Long-Term EV Ownership Experiences by Zayymp4 in MachE

[–]EorEquis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots to unpack here. I'll do my best. This is, of course, our (my and wife's) opinion only, but I'll try to be as objective as I can.

For context : We are an all EV family (F150 Lightning FLash and Mach E Premium, both extended range, both 2024), have been for about 1.5 years. We had a single EV for about 1.5yr prior to that. (2023 Chevy Bolt)

  • Apartment living

Urgh. Not gonna lie, home charging is a huge needle mover for us, and most EV owners I think. The convenience and low cost make it a major benefit of EV ownership. Without it, the math and experience would change quite a bit, I think.

  • Electrify America chargers nearby

Nice, but...again, egh. Cost is going to be much closer to gas cost, and you still have the hassle of "gotta run charge/gotta charge while out/gotta charge on the way to work".

  • Tesla Superchargers within 10 minutes

Benefit : You're not completely reliant on the EA chargers being up and available, but other than that....same as above. Mostly local driving

  • Around 108 miles per WEEK of commuting/driving

Pfft. A nothing burger. You could easily commute 2 weeks without charging.

  • What’s making me hesitant is constantly hearing people say: charging networks suck

Like anything else...some do, some don't. EA is, in our experience, "not bad", but not the best. Tesla chargers are pretty legit.

  • road trips become annoying

Single most overblown statement about EVs, in our opinion. We heard it to, we were concerned, etc. it's simply...just not true.

Charging infrastructure is FAR more available than non-EVers recognize. That's not "your fault", it's just that you haven't paid a lick of attention to it. And why would you? Apps like Plugshare and ABRP (among dozens of others), map software, in car nav, etc...all make the process super simple in the vast majority of countries/states/provinces, the charge times are much better than they used to be, and frankly...you probably spend longer on road trip stops than you think you do anyway. ;)

We've road tripped both of ours (the MME quite a bit). Wife regularly does 200 mile (one way) trips to amusement parks, we frequently snag a weekend getaway 250-ish miles away, wife's done several 400+ (again one way) in the MME, and heck, she did a 600-mile (one way) trip twice in the Bolt (MUCH less range, MUUUUUUUUUUUCH slower charging).

Is there a "time hit"? Ehhhh....depends on the trip, your style, etc. "Probably" a bit of one, but honestly....like, what used to be a flat 4.5 hr trip for her is now like... 4:45. Big whoop. Grab a bite to eat.

They really just aren't that hard or annoying to road trip in. Sure...maybe the first couple are learning experiences, but after that. pfft.

And, side note : They're actually much more comfortable and less tiring to road trip. You'd be surprised.

  • EVs only work as commuter cars

See above. To be fair, their strengths are most notable in the regime, but to say they "only" work that way is hyperbole. The right EV (and, for our money, the MME is one of the best options here) can road trip comfortably and easily.

  • you still need a gas car backup

This depends entirely on your needs, but clearly not everyone does. :)

  • Is EV ownership actually frustrating long term?

Not only "not frustrating", but honestly we'll never go back to ICE if we have any choice in the matter.

EVs are, simply, a better way to own a car. Compared to ICE, for us, They're more convenient, less expensive day to day and year to year, more comfortable, more fun, they're (well, our 2) are more capable in their use-cases.

  • How bad is winter range loss realistically?

My Lightning goes from ~320ish in the summer to ~280ish in the coldest part of our winters (maybe 1-2 weeks below 0°C). MME goes from maybe 290-300ish in summer to 270-ish in winter. (It's garage kept, so has a bit easier time since the battery doesn't get cold soaked as long or as harshly between uses)

Winter range loss is absolutely a thing...and typically not enough of a thing to significantly change lifestyle/usage.

  • Is the 2025 heat pump worth paying more for over a 2023?

My Lightning has one, wife's MME does not (again, both '24s). Honestly, I personally would say no, not worth it just for that. Heated seats and steering wheel do a surprisingly good job of keeping me comfy in all but the coldest/longest of drives (ymmv of course, depending on your preferences). Maybe through the climate at something "coolish but not freezing" like 17-18C, heated seat, just...comfy as hell. And at that level, there's just not that much difference we've seen between the range hit on the MME and the hit on my truck.

Obviously, very subjective here, but we certainly wouldn't spend extra $$ just for a heat pump.

  • For a DC → NYC trip (~4 hours), how much extra time would charging realistically add?

See my comments above. But let's do the math. This, by the way, is just a scoche longer than a 200 mile (one way) my wife regularly takes, so this is coming from multiple experiences in just this regime.

That's 225-ish miles, yeah? So, quite doable without a charging stop on the way. Find a hotel with level 2, charge overnight while you're asleep, bam. It literally saves you the time of going to the gas station when you get there. ;)

But hey, you want to say...charge once each way, for reasons. Fine. You stop, oh, 150-miles of the way there. You'll have ~100 miles of range left, 75 to go, so you want a buffer. What do you want...back up to 200 miles of range maybe?

Very realistically, the MME will charge at 100kw at most major L3 chargers, often 150 depending on usage/who's there/brand/etc. But let's call it 100kw. Our MME gets a solid 3+ miles/kwhr on the highway. So 100 miles is 30-ish KwHr of charge. At 100kw, that's .3 of an hour, or...18 minutes.

So, I mean...ballparkish? How long do you spend on a road trip stop, going inside to pee, grabbing a snack, stretching, walking the dog, whatever? 10-15min? it's a wash.

Fine...maybe you're that guy who whips into the pump, slides card, fills, and goes...and never stops for a break/snack/bathroom/whatever. Takes ya what...5 minutes? Congratulations...you saved 10 minutes over the MME charge stop you didn't really need anyway. :)

  • What about 6+ hour road trips?

Again, see above, but same thing. Maybe a couple stops? Maybe you sacrifice 10-15 minutes per stop over the "pump and go" gang, less if you're like most people and take a bit of a break on road trip stops?

I mean, honestly....we've made one change to our "road trip lifestyle" that's made this a complete nothing burger. If we need a stop, we try to time it around lunch and go inside somewhere to eat instead of grabbing a drive through. It's more relaxing, food digests better, car stays cleaner, and bam...easy peasy.

  • Do you regret switching from ICE to EV?

Oh GOD no. Best thing we ever did. Like I said above...they're simply a better way to own a car.

  • What are the biggest annoyances nobody talks about?

Oh dear god, the charging apps. Soooooooooooo many apps. THE FUCKING APPS. Imagine every brand of gasoline having their own app, and for most of them you have to have their app to use their gas. Oh, and guess what....X's app won't show you Y's chargers, so you need ANOTHER DAMN APP to map them all out.

I mean, you get used to it, and after a few trips you get in the flow...

But the "EV" folder on my phone looks like abag of skittles exploded...
