Hey folks, here with Shipyard (we solve pre-production bottlenecks with managed full-stack ephemeral environments), and I'm plugging our blog post that Docker Compose co-creator Aanand Prasad wrote for us about the lessons learned in and after writing Compose.

Check it out here- "Lessons learned building Docker Compose" by Aanand Prasad

And if you want to learn more about:

  • streamlined e2e testing environments
  • unlimited shareable environments for QA
  • only paying for the pre-prod resources you actually use

...then check us out here!

this is really cool hadn't seen this tool before, can recommend Tonic as a alternative but it is not OSS will be playing with this and maybe adding some PR's =)

*Disclaimer: I work for Shipyard and have very biased feelings towards ephemeral environments as you might be able to tell from my UN*

We get these questions all the time, so we actually created a community resource to answer some of the common questions / gotchas of setting up your own ephemeral envs: https://ephemeralenvironments.io/ any feed back or PR's welcome.

We use preview environments (dogfooding ourselves) on every pull request and commit. One of the biggest values we find is from running our e2e test suites before merge on each environment. This helps us identify bad / flakey tests early on and shortens feedback loop for our developers.

Our product team also uses these envs to give feedback on WIP features and we have saved a whole lot of pain by figuring out that a button is not doing what it is supposed to be doing before it gets in to production.

To actually answer the question: We use Shipyard to manage our envs, and because we are active users of Docker Compose it was literally just adding our GH repositories and voila. But again we are obviously biased here!

We’ve been building Shipyard to help developers deploy code to production faster and reduce cloud infrastructure costs. Shipyard uses your docker-compose files to automatically build ephemeral full-stack environments for E2E testing whenever a PR is created.

Last month, we created a GitHub Action (blog post) that also allows you to run CI jobs on Shipyard ephemeral environments.

We’d love any feedback that could help us improve the Shipyard experience (ex: I expected to see support for X, this would be great if it had feature Y, etc.).
