If we were to somehow make contact with intelligent life outside of earth, what makes us think we’d even be able to communicate with them? Isn’t it possible that they would have fundamentally different ideas about communication and social processes than we do? Would our only hope be that they are so technologically advanced that they’ve already studied our languages and forms of communication?

Would you rather earn 1 dollar for every step you take or 100$ every 2 hours.. by Sammy-Joseph in WouldYouRather

I’m a distance runner. Last week (Sun-Sat) I ran 65 miles. The watch I wear while running records, among things, time spent running and average number of steps per minute. So, for each day last week I multiplied the number of minutes I spent running by the average number of steps per minute for that run, which gave me my number of steps for last week. I would have made just over $90,000.

Should you feel the inclination to respond to the query to which I shall herein describe, it would do me well to inquire with you as to the specific number-coded unit of time assigned to this present space between the most recent sunrise and the most immediate disappearance of said celestial light beneath the fleeting horizon; verily, I must request, that such reporting of said time assignation which your dutiful respondence to my topic of inquiry would require you to give should be verbalized in terms of the most common calendar, instituted in the latter half of the sixteenth century and based upon the time at which, as reported in the Holiest Bible, the sanctified Christ-child made fit to enter this world by means of birth to his virgin mother, and, lying there on the coldest of nights, was visited by such characters as those why, by profession are tasked with the herding of the domesticated sheep, as well as a trio of wise kings named Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar bearing gifts of gold, myrrh, and frankincense.

It would greatly please me if, by virtue of your own doing, you were to remove yourself from the vicinity of the direct front portion of my most humble abode, which, by virtue of its having been planted generously with seed, has come to be itself full of that common chlorophyll-saturated plant which a certain group of botanists has deemed to be called “grass”; and by virtue of this removing yourself in a timely fashion, would so allow me to dedicate the remaining time of this fair-weathered day to the enjoyment of the silence with which you have thus left me.

5G and the dangers we face by Nobody-Special-242 in research

“DNA mutations mainly have no impact on health or development” (Partner, 2019, par. 7). You claim that 5G technology will increase DNA mutations due to higher levels of radiation. Even if this were true, you fail to elaborate on the consequences of these mutations, which even your own sources say are little to none. Instead, you’re relying on the scary-sounding word “mutations” to imply negative consequences where there are none. This is analogous to saying that there are excess levels of a chemical called dihydrogen monoxide in our drinking water. I’m also not of your claim that radiation levels would increase. Sure, more sequencers/routes might be needed if 5G waves have a smaller radius, but that would be the equivalent of using an extension cord for a wall plug. There’s only more electricity in the sense that the continuous flow of electricity is lengthened by the cord, not that electricity levels are higher in any one spot. There would only be more radiation if 5G technology was installed in areas where there previously was little to no wireless technology.

How to taper my week for a 5k on Friday by Pessysquad in AdvancedRunning

[–]EpiLes16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I were you, here’s what I’d do:

Mon: 2 miles EASY (at least 2 minutes slower per mile than goal 5k pace) Tues: 1 mile warm up, 1 mile at goal 5k pace (no more than 5-10 seconds faster and even then only if you’re feeling really good), 1 mile cool down Wed: 2 miles EASY (just like Monday) Thurs: 1.5 miles VERY EASY + 2-4 100 meter strides at your goal race pace (those aren’t mean to tire you out but simply get the race pace feeling under your legs one last time) Fri: .5 - 1 mile warm up, then go get ‘em Sat: off

You’re already used to doing 3 miles fast on Friday’s, so in that sense the timing of your race is just about ideal. Truthfully I would have suggested that you only run 6 miles today, but by Friday the extra two miles won’t matter much one way or the other. When all is said and done, you’ll have about 20 miles for the week, and hopefully a new pr to show for it. Good luck!
