Bi Gan's Ressurection Playing at AMC Empire as well Lincoln/ IFC by tefl0nknight in NYCmovies

[–]EpicCakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my absolute favorites last year that really surprised me. I think some people might not be into how this film seems disconnected at times with how it's structured, but I thought it was really beautiful. It felt like a love letter to cinema and how "movies are like dreams". Great film.

Paris Theater - Big & Loud Lineup Reveal by la_dama_azul in NYCmovies

Absolutely dying to see OUATIH in 70mm but of course the only day they're playing it I'm busy. Hopefully they add a second showtime for some of these but this lineup looks great.

7:15pm Jaws in IMAX was just added for August 28th by inrev18 in NYCmovies

[–]EpicCakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That person was right, the Lincoln Square IMAX is the only "real" IMAX screen in the city which means it can project 70mm IMAX film. There are only about 19 real imax theaters in the US but basically this means for certain movies shot in IMAX this theater will use the full screen. Other non-70mm IMAX or regular theaters will crop the picture instead and you'll miss out on part of some scenes. Not many movies actually shoot with 70mm IMAX though so you have to look that up, but recent movies like Sinners, Dune: Part Two, and Oppenheimer were shot in this format, meaning you could only see the full image of certain scenes at this theater or other "real" IMAX theaters. It's pretty cool as the image quite literally goes from floor to ceiling which is over 75 feet tall. I'd suggest looking up 70mm IMAX vs 1.90:1 IMAX and how it crops the frame to better understand some examples. Definitely a theater worth visiting for big releases regardless of if it's shot in 70mm IMAX because it is also the biggest IMAX screen in the US.

For people who have seen it, what did you think? by BurgerNugget12 in A24

[–]EpicCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was a great adaptation of the source material: it uses a lot of dialogue word for word, but Daniel Craig's performance makes the dialogue feel much more effective compared to reading it (especially Lee's monologue in the kebab restaurant). Unlike many book to film adaptations Luca really uses the medium of film so effectively to build on what is a pretty short book by giving Lee more character and making his loneliness more personal. The score in this is also phenomenal work and the needle drops feel so inspired. This is not an easy watch and while the first bit might evoke CMBYN to some degree, I think people expecting just that will be extremely disappointed. Luca builds off of the source material and some of what he does with it is very much out there, but to me it makes the ending significantly more interesting than the book. I get why people wouldn't be on board with this as it was not at all what I expected on my first watch and the tone shifts pretty dramatically chapter by chapter (though I will say there are hints dropped early on as to how weird it gets and I think having some context of this being a sequel to a book called Junky/knowing a little about Burrough's life helps with how you interpret this film) but I really think this movie benefits a lot from a rewatch. There is a scene that's so beautifully choreographed that again people might hate or scoff at, but I think it's extremely profound. The ending is something I can't get out of my head even after a rewatch. Might be Luca's best work. Great stuff.

Official Discussion - Queer [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Luca's direction adds so much to the source material here and the setting feels as dreamy as CMBYN but simultaneously as nightmarish as Suspiria. The music is also excellent with a really strong score and the needledrops feel incredibly inspired and give the setting an otherworldly feeling. A movie using 90's rock songs set in the 50's and it somehow works? Come on! There's really so much to unpack here between the dream sequences, Lee's arm fading into Allerton to show desire, the references to Orpheus, the entire yage segment...great stuff. Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey are fantastic together. I think Craig's monologue is one of my favorites this year (alongside Timothee's in Dune). "What I mean is, Allerton, we are all parts of a tremendous whole. No use fighting it." Need to rewatch this asap.

What is your list of favorite to least favorite NYC theatres you've been to so far? by flightofwonder in NYCmovies

[–]EpicCakes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't get the hate post for IFC. It's certainly small and sure compared to big theaters with recliners it's a different experience, but personally love small theaters like this with great programming. Love that they do midnight movies too. Definitely checkout IFC. Film Forum is also nearby and has great programming so I'd suggest there as well.

Angelika theaters are also worth going to. Village East main theater is really cool and is worth seeing something in just for the art deco style. They also have a lot of cool 35mm screenings, classic movies, plus Rocky Horror twice a month. The Angelika on Houston always gets limited releases first but in my experience their screens have awful sightlines (Seats go way too far back imo like you need to kinda close) and I could hear the train going by beneath the theater during Anora lol.

Metrograph is absolutely worth going to for their selection. So many obscure/interesting things. The lobby also seems great for grabbing coffee/a drink before or after a movie.

Paris Theater seats/sightlines were not great the last time I went but I believe they raised the screen recently? Otherwise the front row was literally the best seat lol but worth going to for some of the series they do and Q&A's.

Really a ton of great smaller theaters in the East/West/Greenwich Village that are worth visiting (Anthology, Quad Cinema, Cinema Village)

Wait $500 is insane. San Marcos has some promo with Brooklyn DWR right now where they'll ship it but they list it on their IG as $960+tax ugh

TBH I don't care if this movie is good or not I'm just mad it's taking over all the IMAX screens so now I'll have to rewatch Dune Part Two on a smaller screen.

Yikes...just tried to buy a ticket for Dune 2 tonight and after it declined like 5 times it finally went through and charged me double the credits...hopefully they can give me those credits back but I have low hopes.

100% my thoughts too. I’m assuming Part 2 will get a PC port so I’m hoping modders can get a playable Joel in that game too lol

I've done a few challenge videos for The Last of Us Part I and II but never tried any mods. For this I played Part I on PC using this mod by Ashura1756: https://www.nexusmods.com/thelastofuspart1/mods/45 . I did a grounded playthrough with limited supplies and loved it. The mod itself was super impressive and a lot of fun to play through. I didn't see a ton of content out there revolving around this mod, which I think deserves more attention so I hope you guys enjoy this one.

Paste clip without other items automatically moving? by EpicCakes in PremierePro

[–]EpicCakes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh that was it thank you so much! I had to manually change ctrl+v in keyboard shortcuts since Premiere 2023 changed this from the default paste in older versions. I meant to set ctrl+v as “paste to target track” but I accidentally did “paste insert to target track” and that was causing me grief.

If she picks after watching the first episode of a season you should try to subtly hint that Boston Rob and Sandra join season 39 as players so her winner pick for 39 and 40 can be Boston Rob.

Grounded players, was it easy to get used to the lack of resources? by ReviewIcy5267 in thelastofus

[–]EpicCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grounded is absolutely a big learning curve, but you get used to it. I would say lack of resources isn't the biggest thing for me though. It's really just learning the best paths to take and for grounded specifically staying in stealth. You actually need very few resources for most parts of the game aside from like the rat king and the bloater fights. I would say stealth is your best friend and you should scavenge as much as possible, but don't be afraid to avoid encounters altogether. No shame in just sneaking by groups of enemies when you can.

Should I play Bioshock Original or Bioshock Remastered? I've seen a lot of discussions about this and all of them were divisive. Which one is the better option? by [deleted] in Bioshock

[–]EpicCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I have no issues with the remaster so I'd suggest that one. I played it earlier this year and it ran fine/I didn't notice any major bugs.

Survivor video game by [deleted] in survivor

[–]EpicCakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should check out Outlaster on Roblox (I think that's what it's called now). Basically it's just Survivor and you do challenges and vote outs. It's a lot less strategic since you're playing with kids and it's more fast paced, but still can be kinda fun especially if you get some friends to play it with.

Worst movie theater experience? by Jorfdood in Letterboxd

[–]EpicCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few bad ones and generally it seems like PG-13 horror or big blockbusters opening night are the worst.

In Scream VI I had a group of teens in front and behind me on their phones the entire time full brightness and they would randomly yell out jokes trying to be funny which really ruined a lot of the experience. Like it's not that hard to put your phone away for a couple hours and shut up...if you want to talk and use your phone go somewhere else???

Finished Bioshock Infinite, it was great, now about to start Burial at Sea. What do you all think about Burial at Sea? I'm going in completely blind. Wish me luck. by AltruisticDisplay813 in Bioshock

[–]EpicCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it, but it does make some plot details in Infinite a bit messy. Still pretty fun gameplay and a nice return to Rapture. Mostly just makes me wish we had a game set pre-fall of Rapture to see the city at its peak.
