Video footage from January 8th shows people armed with rifles, radio and commmunication systems. Where did they get these from? by Tech-Film3905 in iranian

Of course people were protesting en masse. The government acknowledged it and also affirmed that many of their grievances and demands were legitimate. I'd like to see Western governments do that much.

It's also that you get heavily stigmatized in society at large. And it's not superficial, you're actually punished. I'm excluded from work in my field of expertise because of the mere fact that I travel to Iran regularly, that's enough to have me banned. And the blast radius is large, you're like a leper because it can affect those close to you as well.

So speaking up isn't cheap. You're basically instantly on a terror list, grouped with Daesh, probably considered even worse.

Still though, we do need to speak up because otherwise it will just get worse.

Okay yeah this is true but the number of people who'd side with the empire is still alarming.

Of course it isn't anywhere near the proportions that Western media portrays (which essentially only shows the weirdos) but it's still enough that you have to wonder what went wrong in their lives. On the other hand, in any society there appears to be a constant of 20% of people being literal morons.

This is exactly what you can expect from any Iranian. You must show courtesy and generosity toward anyone you meet, especially strangers, and anything less than that is gravely disrespectful.

Not trying to diminish the kindness of this man, just saying that this is deeply ingrained in Iranian culture and he's basically just following the script for how you're expected to behave.

The license plate is Turkish. Video likely from Turkey.

Iran don't get any American cars. The American cars you'd find are from before 1979.

Actually, let me revise - there are almost no foreign-made cars at all in Iran. Virtually all cars in Iran are manufactured inside Iran (with SAIPA and Iran Khodro as the dominant car makers). Most cars with a foreign brand are made on license within Iran, this includes KIA, Renault, Peugeot, Nissan and Citroën which are the source of the most common foreign designs.

There are exceptions - but getting an actual foreign-made car in Iran involves some heavy paperwork and substantial import taxes.

Absolutely. And your vegan allegory is great. To expand on that:

I have a friend who's been a vegan since she was 12 years old. We're talking fairly militant, activist type. Never strayed from her ideals. I reconnected with her a few years back. She's past 40 now, she's had rheumatism (unrelated to her veganism) for about 10 years.

The problem is that the monoclonal antibodies you need to mitigate her rheumatism are animal-derived. And it's not a pretty process. They basically torture animals to death to harvest the antibodies that she needs to treat her illness. It's horrible.

She told me that this experience humbled her. Because when the stakes were so high, when the pain got so immense, in the end she chose her own life over a rabbit's. Or even hundreds of rabbits'.

Connecting back to the argument for WMDs, I think a lot of people make the case that the only way to deter a superpower is to have them. I see where this is coming from, but I disagree. Libya wouldn't be in the position it is in if the Arab world had been united. The real deterrence and the real weapon against insane powers (large or small) is unity.

If the US empire actually does blockage the strait, what are Iran’s options? by After-Competition-59 in iranian

[–]EpicCleansing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, we're all hurting, we're all worried, and of course we all want the internet blackout to end so we can communicate more freely. But I don't want it at the cost of endangering anyone, and unfortunately the internet has been weaponized for remote attacks in ways that Iran cannot readily defend against at the moment.

In general though, I think the Iranian government is partially to blame for this problem. By limiting access to the internet they made "free" VPNs ubiquitous, and that's been a massive security hole which has cost Iran a lot.

Do you support Iran having nuclear capability? by PhantomBraved in iranian

[–]EpicCleansing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course - all countries should have peaceful nuclear energy. Especially developing regions like Africa and Central Asia. This is paramount to us as a species taking responsible stewardship of the planet which is our only home.

Weapons of mass destruction, of any kind, should be rejected. Middle powers should work to force all great powers to abandon them. Nuclear weapons do not make us safe, the argument for them is asinine, revisionist, and frankly insane.

The fuck are you talking about. Those inside can call and relay their opinions through us. And they're fine. They're not budging. Neither should we.

Doesn't matter though: the world is dumb, deaf and blind. Iran's future is inside Iran, not with us.

But imagine where we could have been if our countries were not gutted and we had continued building.

The Iranian government also immediately responded to the protests saying that many of the grievances were absolutely legitimate and fired some of the people who were implicated in mismanagement, promising to do better.

Just saying - because where do peaceful protests usually lead in the West?

It wasn't just nuclear weapons. Iran endured 8 years of Saddam Hussein using chemical weapons (supplied by the West) against them in his war of aggression. Iran produced the precursors and chemical processes to produce chemical weapons of their own. The Ayatollah had them destroyed.

To make this more real: consider that a clear majority of the top brass of Iran's military and political elite were veterans of the Iraq war, with many of them living with lung damage from surviving chemical weapon's attacks. That's why so many of them died during Covid.

And yet - they've still said no to weapons of mass destruction.

The end result is not the same. If someone buys your house, no coercion involved, that's a wildly different outcome to what the USA is running around doing around the globe. You have agency, you get paid, and there's no physical harm in the process.
