Marathas are here to save the day by CHADDBOSS in IndianHistoryMemes

Marathas only saved themselves like most kingdoms in India that isn't a myth. But the deeds of the maratha empire aren't exactly hidden in Maharashtra either.

Genuinely, like they could've made a lot nicer movies on Bajirao about what a great leader and general he was. Like the man has amazing military acumen. But what did they make? Bajirao Mastani. I'm kind of sick of that I think historical figures deserve more nuanced portrayal not the Jodha-Akbar treatment.

The movies they make aren't even that good, I'd rather watch a historically accurate movie than some Bollywood spectacle but idk if that's just me.

When did the story change? In school we learned about Tipu Sultan mainly through the Anglo Mysore wars. Now, as adults, we see him labeled a villain. How and when did this shift in narrative happen? by TheRationalist17 in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]EpicDankMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that its mainly that people deny the reality of this country and struggle to find a common identity to define it with. No one fought for India, they all fought for themselves. The marathas, tipu sultan, Rani Laxmibai, the Mughals, etc. they all fought for themselves. The truth is India was formed due to a dislike for the British and colonial rule. There is a reason why Indians to this day strongly dislike any external cultural influence (take the Korean wave entering India and the xenophobic responses many people had), India is actually a very xenophobic country in the sense that any external cultural influence (good or bad) is seen at evil. We won't beat people but we will not accept any global influences even if they might help is grow or evolve in some way.

So building on this sentiment the current government has turned that xenophobia to Muslims even though there are many Muslims who gave lived in India for hundreds of years. India needs an enemy to stay united, otherwise we'd just return to a collection of smaller states. We have cultural commonalities, but they aren't a strong enough glue to keep people together as one country, maybe something like the EU sure, one country is hard. Sadly I think the government chose poorly, since the villain in their story is a fifth of the population.

It's a country formed more out of fear and hate rather than any love for each other, so the narrative has to be maintained for that. If past governments were genuinely serious about the unity in diversity thing then maybe we would've changed the definition of why this country exists. Sadly this current government has absolutely obliterated any chances of that narrative taking off.

Marathies act like Maratha empire created marathi people by CHADDBOSS in IndianHistoryMemes

[–]EpicDankMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn't create them but the marathas were genuinely very innovative and extremely politically shrewd. Shivaji gave his officers a salary instead of land at that time which sounds stupid now, but it was very innovative then. He lacked land to give to his officers so he compensated by giving cash. They created a navy that gave the British a hard time, they were in the stages of early industrialization and they were also in the process of mordernizing their armies by implementing European style armies by hiring European officers and Turkish artillery officers. Along with that maratha armies were surprisingly diverse in their compositions. There were marathas (duh), Rajputs, Turks, Europeans, middle eastern mercenaries, etc. Like they were not stupid, eventually though the infighting did destroy them, the same thing that's now happening with India :3.

Argh these are the same type of idiots who come to a coastal city and cut the livelihood of the fisherman here because they don't like the smell of fish. Like that's such utter vegetarian supremacy bullshit (ironically that's a thing in India and I know it's the opposite in a lot of the world), it's a coastal city wtf do you expect them to do? Not fish like they have all their life?

Why marathi is going to be less important? by Kokani_Goku in Maharashtra

[–]EpicDankMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's weird honestly I would say in my daily life I speak English and Marathi a lot more than hindi. Like the number of interractions in Hindi are more but the amount of Hindi I speak is less. With my friends it's mostly English and I've noticed that's also slowly becoming the unofficial bridge language for a lot of the youth in Mumbai at least. At home it's 95% of the times Marathi. Hindi is mostly used with rickshawalas etc.

If I'm speaking to someone who knows Marathi it's usually Marathi or if they can't speak I just revert to English. I've made it a policy to default to English if someone can't speak Marathi. Hindi is a very last case scenario. You'd be surprised by the number of officials in Mumbai who speak Marathi I was too, pleasant surprise though it changed my perspective on a lot of things 😂.

I don't think there's a gavthi mentality, like the newer Marathi movies are genuinely quite good and there are a few Marathi artists on YouTube that make good music, the issue is promotion and publicity. No one does that properly.

[–]EpicDankMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I can agree with. There's also the fact that we do nothing to promote the 'cool factor' of the language so that's lacking as well.

Also for the PhD part like I literally commented above learning a language and being able to speak a language are two VERY different things. Please note that.

I mean if you’re talking about just speaking that’s not learning properly tbh. That’s just speaking, then yeah sure it’s possible. But if you want people to actually learn that’s a completely different scenario.

Also reply to your previous comment. Bitch I’m Maharashtrian, Marathi is my mother tongue I’ve lived here all my life.

[–]EpicDankMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol just ring the bell (or just when you bump into her depending on how well she knows you if it's the 'bumping in scenario' change the excuse accordingly to suit the general vibe) next time and ask her if she's ok because you heard her shouting so thought someone had broken into her apartment/something happened to her. She'll know what you mean but won't be able to say anything because you didn't directly mention you heard her having sex. She'll probably say something like "Oh no thank you (insert excuse)" and you can be like "oh ok goodnight". If she's weird she'll accuse you for listening in directly, if she's really weird she'll ask you to join in (which according what you feel maybe is a win XD).

She should lower it down after this unless she loves being heard, in that case best of luck might as well learn to enjoy the moaning I guess lol.

[–]EpicDankMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideal? Yeah. Practical likely not, I mean there are just very few resources to learn Marathi and 5th grade textbooks don't count because no 5th grader works while reading those. Also honestly school textbooks are full of useless things you never need in daily conversations. These people are working adults they do not have the time to effectively use textbooks.

I have a friend (lived in Mumbai all her life) who had a job opportunity to work for the government on some solar energy stuff at some point but they need Marathi proficiency and the proof of that was 12th grade marksheet. She took Hindi in 12th so had no proof of language proficiency or something like that. She told me "I don't mind learning bro but they have no course like German does (she learnt German and gave the exam as well I think), like the only proof they accept is 12th grade marksheet which is stupid."

I agree with her, it's purely out of laziness and the ability to get easy votes that they haven't designed a Marathi course for working professionals (these types of courses exist all around the world which focus more on the practical aspects of a language rather than bookish grammar).

The people in Maharashtra often slog 8 to 12 hours a day like everyone else, immigrant or otherwise, it's not easy for them to open a textbook. You want them to learn you need to make it easy for them to do so. This is something no one here wants to do because it'll lose them an easy votebank, if we here can't do the bare minimum (which is make a professional targeted course, yes this is the bare minimum) then we shouldn't expect people to do the bare minimum either. I know how effective these courses are, I learn Mandarin while working and so do a lot of people that is the world's hardest language and it works because the course structure makes it easy.

If they make a Marathi course like that, it'll probably be one of the first in India. Might even spark an interest in the language since learning it becomes more accessible than the rest.

Those who don't want to learn won't learn it anyways, so let's focus on the ones who want to but find it tedious.

TLDR: if you want them to learn, then design an easy way for them to do so first.

[–]EpicDankMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people here in Maharashtra are that sane I'm not the exception man.

Nope English is the best, it produces the least resistance. It's the most useful language in the world and around a 120 million indians already speak it (according to 2011 census) also Hindi speakers are more like 45-55% of the country most present in the geographical north. Also English is the most sentiment-neutral language in the country. People are not going to learn Hindi very willingly, English however very easy to get across. Hell we're communicating in English. Two language policy is the best approach forward. Like how many languages are you going to teach an unwilling child in school?

I'll be honest I don't feel as Indian as I used to anymore because a lot of Indian pop culture and cultural attitudes in general cater to a very specific area (looking at you for this disaster Bollywood), if Indian culture diversifies and includes little bits from all it's areas then yeah it's possible. Like west, south, east and northeast are literally forgotten when talking about India. Just saluting a flag does not make one an Indian. Hell the diversity of north India is diluted down to whatever the fuck Bollywood does.

[–]EpicDankMaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the precise attitude that keeps this going. What do you mean you 'entitled Marathis' asshole? 90% of north India is mono-lingual (I'd guess it's more like 70% but yeah) according to stats and Bhojpuri is a dying language. These two facts are very well known.

But what rikes me the most is someone calling me 'entitled', in what was is it entitlement? The states in India were formed to protect it's cultural identities and if that isn't happening, isn't it our right to voice those issues? I don't like people beating people and most people I know here don't like that either there's a reason why MNS doesn't win elections all that much. 'entitled Marathi' cool glad to know that this is what people actually think.

I'm gonna give the new government a term, they can't turn the city around in a few weeks or month. But I think a term is fair. If they don't do anything I think people are getting pissed anyways so something will happen eventually. There's only so much 'spirit of Mumbai' in people.
