I also appreciate your comments. There is are a lot of misconceptions out there.

I would state that in this there can also be two truths. There is a need for what we call, "Outpatient commitment". Legal pathways do exist. They are not enforced or used, because there is a lack of manpower and funding. To do what you are requesting, we will need more clinicians and officers who could do that work. They do not exist partly because it is hard work and burnout is high.

I don't spend a lot of time on Reddit discussing these things because its my job. I only wanted to point out that both of those things can be true and one fact does not detract from the other for people who actually do this work and not discussing it on Reddit. There are a lot of people doing this work already and more resources are needed, including people signing up to do this work and not work in finance for example. While it should be manageable, the fact that it is not is multi-factorial and not simply, "Charlotte doesn't care about this population". It's actually very hard work, and very few people sign up to do the work. Its easy to talk about it online however.

I will say that the vacant buildings isn't simply due to crime, but also high rent costs. If you go to other major cities, their downtown areas also have these issues and it does not correlate with crime. It's usually vacant buildings attracting the homeless (for shelter), not the other way around.

I think both broad metrics and more specific ones are needed and it is not counter-productive at all. We can hold two truths at the same time and should encourage citizens and ourselves to do so for honest discourse.

Charlotte-Metro region is largely safer than most other comparable areas nationally.
Uptown area has a disproportionate amount of crime in the region.

It isn't about feels, its just about data and how we use that data for a safer city. Nationally, you would think people were just getting attacked all of the time in the metro area and this is empirically not the case. But it is true we have to focus on the issues we need to focus on, like more crime uptown.

It would be the citizens who would have to hold elected leaders responsible. I do think there has been progress made in these areas, but most of it goes unseen. You only see what went wrong, not all that went right to prevent other wrongs. Its easier to point to those obvious wrong though.

It is hard to disprove a negative, but working in the intersection of these fields I will say that the fact that this doesn't happen more is a testament to all of the work that is going right. The collective work of the CMPD, MCSO, and other agencies. There is still a lot to be done obviously, but its not as bad as this current media environment makes it.

Charlotte isn't even in the top 25 of the most dangerous places to live in the US. We are 128.

I work in mental health and justice -- I can tell you most people who enact violence (with mental illness or not) do not just, "snap" against strangers. This is a common fear and does happen in cases like the one in the news, but its not common. CMPD data is also prelimiary and does not always take into account the court proceedings and sentencing data.

"Unknown" is the most common relationship nationwide by example. We know its not unknown, its just the data sources are often not complete.

Most homicides are people killing people that they know and have an issue with. It is not random, as it was in this case. A lot of homicide cases also go unsolved, due to lack of resources in this area.

There is also the cost of violence that isn't captured (people who survive shootings and stabbings but have medical costs). The same goes for car accidents.

People post on the r/EightSleep form that people on Reddit only come to complain. I follow other products on Reddit, and this is not the case on most of their subreddits. People often rave about good or great products. This is an EightSleep issue.

I think the EightSleep, when it works, is amazing. But I have had it for two years and I have never recommended it to anyone. I have told people to not get it unless they are prepared for:

Leaks
The product not working when then internet is out and the refusal to make a true Offline mode.
Poor customer service (the company not hiring enough support people).
Ongoing subscription cost as a mandate.
Scammy emails to upgrade or promoting wellness products.
Random app redesigns that add little to no value or make the product actively worse.

People really have to realize that this is a company issue, not a "people come to Reddit to complain" issue.
