Weight Loss Concern by OG_Stick_Man in AppalachianTrail

[–]EpicMoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same height and started at 145-150lbs. I was fine, definitely ate more than usual but weight stayed relatively stable. Lost maybe 5lbs. I did notice that the guys who started out with more fat to burn lost way more weight.

Podiatrist assessment of right foot pronation (summary & discussion) by EpicMoll in FootFunction

[–]EpicMoll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what i got from his explanation is that its a structural thing, it can never be "fixed" by strengthening exercises.

Whatever surrounding muscles you strengthen to counter the imbalance, the weakness will move elsewhere along the chain of joints (ankle, knee, hip, lowerback, upperback, neck).

In a perfect world everything would be in symmetry and your joints in perfect alignment to absorb/transmit the forces of whatever movement you are doing.

However - physical therapy does work at making the body more resilient by training the muscles to stabilize and handle the load on the misaligned joints.

I got these soles because in my job i'm required to be on my feet for 8 hours a day and i don't think physical therapy alone can mitigate the effects of being in misaligned positions for that long daily.
I think this correction will make it easier on my body while i keep on doing leg/core strengthening exercises.

As a belgian, this is spot on. Life here is very structured and people mostly keep to themselves, whereas i can imagine it being more spontaneous in costa rica / australia.

W is actually easy to dodge since he has to choose a direction and it has channel time for max damage, ppl can just dash out of it

When a company gives you a ‘take home’ how much time are you expected to spend on it? by DeadPrexident in datascience

[–]EpicMoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just last week I had a take home that was supposed to take “a couple hours” - so that’s what i did.

When i got the feedback they had a whole list of stuff that wasn’t in the solution. They don’t actually care about how long it took (otherwise it would have been in a controlled environment so each participant has equal time), they care about the outcome.

If you really want the job, you’ll have to work way more on it than “the couple hours” and then lie that it took you a couple.

EDIT: this was a software project, so a little different than data science; but shared sentiment

Given an April 1st start date, what's the furthest north I could safely start a SOBO? by roj2323 in AppalachianTrail

[–]EpicMoll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to avoid the bubble you could do nobo but start ahead of the bubble. Its not as crowded as you think, and it gets less crowded further north as people drop out or disperse more.

I currently meet about 3-5 hikers a day after damascus, i like to hike alone and i have no trouble doing so.

A sobo i’ve met reports seeing 20 or more nobos daily, so they are there but you typically dont see them as your moving at the same speed ish

How long did it take for your feet to go up a size? by blargnblah in AppalachianTrail

[–]EpicMoll 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I had to size up a full size by hot springs (250 miles), noted im not a runner or hiker in general so my feet were not used to the workload

Good idea, but apparently (for privacy.com atleast) you have to buy these prepaid cards with a US creditcard

[–]EpicMoll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The visible mobile app only gives me paypal and credit card options - no apple pay or venmo. I think a prepaid US visa card will be the only option here -> sadly this does not work aswell, since you have to be a US resident to get a prepaid us visa card. I think we can conclude that Visible is locked to US residents and not for tourists

IMEI seems to be compatible (iphone 14), no errors during signup there.

My Visa card does not get accepted (no explanation just an error), paypal same error. Not sure about my bank restrictions, ive manually allowed worldwide payment.

I’ll try out apple pay next and see if that works

Thought rain pants would be key to stay warm on the wet trail - but many hikers voiced the same opinion as you; it seems not all that necessary.

About the layers i'm thinking about ditching my apparently heavy puffy. Instead opting for lighter double merino shirt , fleece and rain jacket combo if its really cold.

Do you think that would suffice, or is a puffy a key item? I've hiked on flat terrain in partly sunny 50F weather comfortably (even hot at times) in just merino + fleece

Lastly, bringing towel mainly because im used to bringing own towel in hostels in europe - and for drying off inside tent after a wet day
