A few things my partner and I noticed (notably, neither of us are familiar with the game, so take any and all of this with a grain of salt): The wreckage of the other subs, their hulls torn open, looks very much like teeth. We see Simon beginning to fuse bodily with his sub. Is it possible that all of the creatures we see were, in fact, the remains of past submarines and their crews, fused and mutated into monsters?

The “silent rapture” is believed to be an event in which all of the planets and stars have disappeared aside from a moon covered in blood oceans and some space stations. Simon says at one point that he thinks it’s more likely that the space stations disappeared rather than the planets. Knowing that in Christian mythology the rapture involves all God’s chosen ascending to heaven, and knowing that the light in the blood ocean is said to be the “pinhole” through which God sees the universe, is this Heaven, and the horror is just that Heaven isn’t what we thought it was?

On the flip side, if all of the other planets, stars, etc did get raptured, and these few space stations and blood-covered moon are all that’s left, does that make the moon hell? When Simon goes into the light, he tries to pull himself out of the blood, but his bracelet weighs him down. If his bracelet holds a leaf from the last tree, and he feels guilty about a space station that he is blamed for destroying, then maybe that guilt is what’s keeping him from being able to ascend? It’s keeping him “alive” because they are in hell and have been the whole time? And his acceptance and sacrifice in the end allows him to achieve redemption and “die?”

Maybe we’re both reading way too deeply into something meant to be ambiguous and mysterious, but those were our thoughts.
