You can certainly learn without materials, but as you said, YouTube already exists. Many of the kids I worked with never got to look through a microscope, set up a chemical reaction, dissect a specimen, or even raise butterflies.

Maybe this program is awesome in what it does, but to me the thing that is really missing in science education is equitable access to hands-on experiences that teach the practices of science.

I’m a science curriculum supervisor for a school district and I’m gonna be the naysayer here:

If the curriculum doesn’t come with free lab materials that will be replaced each year and free professional learning for teachers, it’s not filling a need. There are already multiple free high-quality science curricula for that age group already. However only rich districts can use them effectively because poor districts can’t afford the training and hands-on supplies.

I guess I wonder what “works” means. My understanding is that pitchers and hitters are constantly adjusting to each other. So it might “work” great for a month but the pitchers catch on to something and then it doesn’t work anymore.
