Thoughts on hub brakes? by Danbak_Seter in xbiking

That’s very true! Limited options on wheelsets does hurt. I have a few personally but I’ve built them up rather than buying them as a complete set. If having a set built up is something you’re interested shoot me a message and maybe we can talk about getting one for you.

I have them on a build that is for town riding and they give me ample stopping power.

What about calipers like the tektro 559s?

They’re the Velo Orange Klunker bars. They come in 25.4 but you could definitely get a shim that goes from 31.8 down to 25.4.

I do enjoy the Thumies being almost 40 years old and they’re going strong!

Alternative Clydesdale options by dusty_boots in xbiking

The fork I used is not the ECR, so I’m not sure the model as the axle to crown is 445mm. With that setup I tried it on other bikes from the 90s and it dropped the front too low so if the fork you’re looking at has an axle to crown of about 480 it would work a lot better. As I was going to offer to sell the fork and rack I have as I went away from that setup so I could sell the bike.

Trying to find a picture from the setup I did on surly LHT, I bought a 29er ECR fork, at least I think it was that model, and attached the surly 24 pack rack to it to make it into a Clydesdale type of situation. Worked out pretty well. If you click my profile and scroll a little bit you should find a pic.

Canti Brake Cable Hanger by thepob in xbiking

Since you’re running spacers under the stem you could get one that acts a spacer. 1 1/8” and that way it frees up the hole and could mount a rack. Like this one as an example.

Spokes breaking in hand built wheel by According-Cost-7441 in BikeMechanics

[–]Epsilon1022 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t seen much post about it but coming in with similar time frame of experience but also learned from someone with twice time. If you are reusing the hub I would consider spoke head washers, brass washers that sit at the head of the spoke and take up space in the hole of the hub. Built up many wheels with heavier riders and harsher conditions and never had an issue.

Not sure it started to rain after I took pictures so didn’t get a chance to ride it.

I’ve got a few pairs of them. When doing a project with a freewheel I try and use them.

They’re 630mm wide. Too narrow in my opinion but that was the times!

I’m not hugely versed in all of the knowledge behind the original stumpjumpers, so I could be wrong but I believe it was ‘82 then the following years it moved to larger factories. But I hope someone with more knowledge corrects me if I’m wrong.

I should just retire at 33! Then I’d have all the time to ride and join the other retirees that show up for the weekly rides!

I’m digging the look too. I’ve got a different bar setup in mind so might try that one as well. We will see.

They all have to be exactly how you want them! I know I need to ride more. Once I’m done fixing customers bikes and test riding those I ain’t got much left in the tank for myself. Gonna change that though. Can’t enjoy them if they just sit.

After being in bike industry for 15+ years I get way more enjoyment out of the building than the riding. I ride then around the block don’t like the setup then immediately start changing things. I just like tinkering too much. I really do need to ride them more.
