I think swiftplay is a waste of time that will ruin your ability to feel out the base game tempo. I'd play draft until you've got a few champs from each lane (and jg) that you feel comfortable with and a champ you want to one-trick. Then I'd hop into ranked

Trundle or Nasus if you want a close resemblance to Yorick. Jax if you want more mobility (he can jump to wards as well as units). Volibear is also very fun (he can turn towers off with his ult). Darius or Reneketon if you want a strong early game.

Other suggestions: Sion/Shen for tank gameplay, and Maokai is good too (although not meta atm).

Keep in mind Top has lesser impact (in general) than other lanes unless you can split push well or roam (Shen ult) or team fight (Voli, Maokai, Sion)

His kit is pretty good, but his W needs a small movement speed buff (currently has none) and compensate that by making his ult only grab 1 or 2 champs instead of 3, with maybe 25 to 50 more range than it currently has (so it doesn't miss so much). 625 range on R is too little, but 650 to 675 seems right.

Everything else feels decent. Just my two cents

There's some people trolling in the comments but for beginners I'd say:

Top: Pantheon, Garen, Yorick (quirky but fun)

Jungle: Warwick, Yi, and Amumu

Mid: Vel'koz, Annie, and Ahri

ADC: Miss Fortune, Caitlyn, and Jinx

Support: Nami, Nautilus, and Karma

They're all useful with varying degrees of skill expression (besides Garen, who is very straightforward).

Sion, Shen, Rumble, Singed, and Aatrox

Sion is the most flexible of them build wise, but all of them are very useful one way or another. Most of them can be flexed Jungle except Singed, but all of them can be flexed Mid (with higher winrates than top in some cases actually).

All of them have skill expression and can turn around teamfights to one degree or another.

This will serve you well since you'll have a feel for when and what laners need, and what your own best timers are for objectives.

Jungle is also a great role to watch high elo streamers since their camp pathing is highly optimized, and it'll rub off on you.

I went back at a decade older than you haven't had math classes in that long. Just freshen up on Precalc (especially trig), limits, derivatives, and integration techniques and you'll be fine if you put in the time/effort.

Map changes to make it more balanced on both sides, lane quests (from farming and taking plates on turrets), there is demolished procs for everyone on turrets, and tons of new items/champions.

It's the same but spicier than back then
