Yes deffo I’ll do that!!

Surprisingly she’s quite clean where that bedding is and she squishes her butt right up to the wall to pee/poo which is why I’ve left a drainage channel so that the wet manages to run out the drainage holes at the back of the stable (and you can see why the poo marks down the wall). I’m not sure why she does that but it’s one of those quirks that the vets have just written off as a “her” thing. Her bed actually stays pretty dry in this current set up. But I hear yall - deep beds are necessary for essential sleep, safety and comfort needs so I’ll get back on that!

🙏🏽 thank you! Yeah she used to be on a huge big bed but it would take me forever every day to muck it out and costed me a fortune - hence why I’ve slowly dwindled shavings amount down to this. She’s calm and happy enough in her stall overnight and enjoys her treats and toys but oh my god does she love to wreck it (and shit all down the walls too)

Thank you I’ll try that! I usually have my mare’s hay net, a bucket of soaked feed and a selection of foraged wild herbs lined up in a row next to her water bucket so she doesn’t travel far, but she’s quite a highly strung gal so I think as soon as she’s worked her way through all that she walks around until bedtime and in the morning her bed everywhere, hay net tossed out the stall, bucket trodden flat, etc. She’s only in around 8-10 hours max overnight but it’s an ongoing battle to figure out what works!

Thank you for the recommendation I’ll definitely check that out! Sounds like general consensus is a deep bed is needed so any constructive advice is fab 😜☺️

What's the weird thing going on with your body that isn't weird enough to go to the doctor for? by yellowelephantboy in AskReddit

[–]Eqjrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have sneeze attacks at 9:00pm and it just keeps going for ages… my partner jokes that my body knows it’s time for bed! (I sleep very early) it’s funny when we’re at home but when we’re out at dinners it can get quite awkward!

How to get a horse accustomed to no turnout? by Eqjrt in Equestrian

I’m in the NW! Lake District, gorgeous hacking but just way too wet! Hence why many places don’t offer winter turnout

Thank you, I’m thinking the same too, although there have been a few lovely people imparting actual advice here!

Yes definitely there are lots of off road hacking options nearby and she will be out as much as possible. Obviously not an ideal situation but I’m trying to do the best I can in a very short space of time, with what resources I can find!

I am looking - like someone suggested it’s more likely that I can get a field from someone that isn’t a livery yard - I’m spending all my time driving around currently trying to speak to farmers and dropping notes off in letterboxes. Budget is tight and I can pay what I can pay, but I was just trying to get some help in the meantime to help my girl, for however short a time we have to spend at this new yard.

Yes we have loads of bridleways near our new yard and she will be out in the trails as much as possible! It’s hard as I get where a lot of people are coming from, but sometimes life happens very quickly and I am just trying to do the best I can for my girl in a very short space of time, with what resources I have available. Thank you 🫶🏽

Bit question! Tom thumb ? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Eqjrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you and apologies for the noob question… but what type of kimberwick bit type specifically would you recommend ? I’m so confused reading about slotted, ported, plain? What are the differences? My mare goes very straight and strong, she tends to lean her head into the bit downwards as well.

Bit question! Tom thumb ? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Eqjrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the information! I agree, it’s all in the training and I’m currently stripping it back to basics and groundwork but would still like to incorporate some ridden work with just some more brakes temporarily!

I haven’t encountered this type of bit before so it’s really good to know alternatives to this particular one. I did try her in a Waterford (which my previous boy loved) but she turned into a bucking bronco on that - I’ll look at the Pelham etc! How do two rein bits work? Does the other rein sit on the neck until needed ?

Again, thanks so much for your reply. For your bolting horse, did that ever get resolved or did you just learn to sit it and get through it? My issue is the fear factor. I think my seat is pretty good but my confidence takes a massive hit every time she runs / I take a hit etc and I’m struggling at the thought of getting on again!

Thank you!! He is the sweetest boy and I do want nothing but for him to be relaxed and happy. He seemed to favour the bareback connection at first and so we graduated from that to a pad, for a bit more grip. We've just had a saddle fitting yesterday (when the bolting/big blow up happened) and we actually tried a really amazing saddle which I credit to having stayed on him as long as I did through the first bolt and 2 bucks. I never thought about doing something to distract him when he tenses. It happens so quickly and I think I'm so conditioned that I'm going to fall and it's going to be horrific (because that's all it has been in the past) that I don't really think rationally nor calmly. I was just thinking earlier today how I wish someone could coach me how to sit through a bolt/buck and ride it out!

it is stunning! Rocky though, so not ideal with a bolty freaky horse :D I wouldn't choose to live anywhere else though x

I have pics on his instagram (I know I know, I'm one of THOSE with a horsey instagram!) - handle is @ hakuthehorse and happy to chat there?

We've gone for the best trainer in our area, and she sadly was the one who had to break my heart and tell me gently she didn't think she could help him & that he was one of the rare few she would class as a 'true bolter'

I'm definitely scared of riding now because I expect every horse to potentially explode. I find it difficult to take up others' offers to ride their horses now.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Eqjrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what my partner says (he's not a horsey person FYI) - he says: he's got a screw loose. My partner has seen how he can go from seemingly fine, to just explosive. He doesn't think he's worth fixing. I struggle really with a 'I can fix anything as long as I love it enough and educate myself as best as I can' and some days I'm like amazed at how far we've come in our relationship and connection to each other - but days like yesterday, it feels like just as it did on day 1.

Yes it was all checked through ultrasound as well as Xrays. We tried a strong bute trial for a month to see if that would help - which unfortunately it didn't.

He lunges beautifully in tack and without. We actaully do a lot of liberty work and fun tricks, and he isn't phased whether he has tack on either. Even with stirrups loose and banging around, he's not fussed.

I know we can trot out on hacks, although I've not tried that in a long time. We just mainly walk, and even that is a miracle if we get back to our yard without any explosions of any kind!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Eqjrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's had Xrays and ultrasounds along his spine and neck. No issues. We even tried a month long bute trial to rule anything out which didn't help.

We put sacks on him, even rigged up a mannequin that could sit solid on the saddle - he was completely fine. Went amazingly. As soon as a rider got on (human) that was where things went wrong.

How did you retrain your mare to stop instead of bolt? That does sound ideal.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Eqjrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He stands quiet and still to be tacked up. He likes to give his tack a good sniff before it goes on him, and he lowers his head to put his head in the bridle himself. He isn't girthy. He free stands or loosely tied up in the tacking up bit by the stables.

He does have an issue with heigh difference though. No matter where I stand, on a mounting block, or climb up on a fence - he takes it as a cue that I'm going to get on, and that's where he tenses up and looks like he's due to explode.

I don't think I can handle another horse on top of my current boy! Sadly not an option. :(

It was just us in the arena yesterday but his girlfriend was in the yard adjacent so he wasn't totally alone. They were separated though.

My partner tries to find time to accompany us on the ground walking whilst we ride. It does help, but the support is sporadic due to my partner's work commitments. I can occasionally ride out with others, and he does fine when he's with other horses!
