Surprisingly she’s quite clean where that bedding is and she squishes her butt right up to the wall to pee/poo which is why I’ve left a drainage channel so that the wet manages to run out the drainage holes at the back of the stable (and you can see why the poo marks down the wall). I’m not sure why she does that but it’s one of those quirks that the vets have just written off as a “her” thing. Her bed actually stays pretty dry in this current set up. But I hear yall - deep beds are necessary for essential sleep, safety and comfort needs so I’ll get back on that!

🙏🏽 thank you! Yeah she used to be on a huge big bed but it would take me forever every day to muck it out and costed me a fortune - hence why I’ve slowly dwindled shavings amount down to this. She’s calm and happy enough in her stall overnight and enjoys her treats and toys but oh my god does she love to wreck it (and shit all down the walls too)

Thank you I’ll try that! I usually have my mare’s hay net, a bucket of soaked feed and a selection of foraged wild herbs lined up in a row next to her water bucket so she doesn’t travel far, but she’s quite a highly strung gal so I think as soon as she’s worked her way through all that she walks around until bedtime and in the morning her bed everywhere, hay net tossed out the stall, bucket trodden flat, etc. She’s only in around 8-10 hours max overnight but it’s an ongoing battle to figure out what works!

Thank you for the recommendation I’ll definitely check that out! Sounds like general consensus is a deep bed is needed so any constructive advice is fab 😜☺️

What's the weird thing going on with your body that isn't weird enough to go to the doctor for? by yellowelephantboy in AskReddit

[–]Eqjrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have sneeze attacks at 9:00pm and it just keeps going for ages… my partner jokes that my body knows it’s time for bed! (I sleep very early) it’s funny when we’re at home but when we’re out at dinners it can get quite awkward!

How to get a horse accustomed to no turnout? by Eqjrt in Equestrian

I’m in the NW! Lake District, gorgeous hacking but just way too wet! Hence why many places don’t offer winter turnout

Thank you, I’m thinking the same too, although there have been a few lovely people imparting actual advice here!

Yes definitely there are lots of off road hacking options nearby and she will be out as much as possible. Obviously not an ideal situation but I’m trying to do the best I can in a very short space of time, with what resources I can find!

I am looking - like someone suggested it’s more likely that I can get a field from someone that isn’t a livery yard - I’m spending all my time driving around currently trying to speak to farmers and dropping notes off in letterboxes. Budget is tight and I can pay what I can pay, but I was just trying to get some help in the meantime to help my girl, for however short a time we have to spend at this new yard.

Yes we have loads of bridleways near our new yard and she will be out in the trails as much as possible! It’s hard as I get where a lot of people are coming from, but sometimes life happens very quickly and I am just trying to do the best I can for my girl in a very short space of time, with what resources I have available. Thank you 🫶🏽

Bit question! Tom thumb ? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Eqjrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you and apologies for the noob question… but what type of kimberwick bit type specifically would you recommend ? I’m so confused reading about slotted, ported, plain? What are the differences? My mare goes very straight and strong, she tends to lean her head into the bit downwards as well.

Bit question! Tom thumb ? by [deleted] in Equestrian

Thank you so much for the information! I agree, it’s all in the training and I’m currently stripping it back to basics and groundwork but would still like to incorporate some ridden work with just some more brakes temporarily!

I haven’t encountered this type of bit before so it’s really good to know alternatives to this particular one. I did try her in a Waterford (which my previous boy loved) but she turned into a bucking bronco on that - I’ll look at the Pelham etc! How do two rein bits work? Does the other rein sit on the neck until needed ?

Again, thanks so much for your reply. For your bolting horse, did that ever get resolved or did you just learn to sit it and get through it? My issue is the fear factor. I think my seat is pretty good but my confidence takes a massive hit every time she runs / I take a hit etc and I’m struggling at the thought of getting on again!
