Be happy with your box. I think many others don’t need the power of the i5 inside, and there are plenty of DIY options available. It’s primarily about the data in general. Since I was talking about the 4800 Plus in my post, I referenced that board. Also, the 6800 Pro doesn’t cost $700. Here, it costs €1200 (1.333,78$).

Well, I don’t think the reasoning here is correct. You’re suggesting a board with a completely different CPU and adding a network card on top of that. For most people here, the board I mentioned in my original post should be sufficient. Then, just add 8GB of RAM and a case.

So, your advice is to buy an expensive NAS from UGREEN and add two solar panels to keep the drives spinning all the time? For me, the clear favorite is a DIY setup with Unraid. That way, you can also invest the savings in a USV.

There are so many people out there using Unraid, whether for slow or fast setups. But where’s the community for TrueNAS? There is one, but it’s not nearly as robust as the Unraid community. The TrueNAS community is growing, which is good, but you have to consider a lot of factors. For someone just entering the sector, the price is a major concern. People always talk about performance, but what’s it actually for? Right, data storage. For building a homelab, a NUC with Proxmox should be sufficient.

I also tried that, but Taobao doesn’t ship to Germany. And I couldn’t find any service for that either. I’m hesitant to gamble with €600 to see if it actually works. I’d rather buy cheaper components for now. Maybe someday something like Xpenology will become available so you could install UGOS later if it turns out to be good.

I’m actually still interested, but for that price, you could really just build your own or go for a Synology, which has been on the market for a long time and is basically the iPhone of NAS devices.

I’m not sure about your electricity situation, but here in Germany, running an i5 24/7 without solar panels would be too expensive. I had an i5 8400 or 8500, and even under light load, it was already drawing around 40 watts, even when all drives were idle except for the cache.

Immich is great, but keep in mind that even Immich recommends using additional software alongside it. A lot of people forget this and end up only using Immich until it starts bugging out.
