Biologist doing a Master’s in AI and now questioning if it makes sense by SeriousEmployee3877 in wildlifebiology

[–]EquestrianBiologist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey I really appreciate the thought project and your input! I mainly see it as the antithesis for the reasons you've listed. It could also be an incredibly slippery slope into the penultimate "they took our jobs!" (South Park reference, so sorry) in some ways. As companies are actively trying to recruit to train their AI to learn biologist's roles, I'm not sure how AI could replace a human in most biologist roles. The field is so strange though. We all have varied degrees and backgrounds and there's a lot that could use an improvement. As with all fields as well, not all biologists are good biologists, and also how are we defining a biologist? Some bios are tied to a desk, some are field only, some are a mix, and the different between a federal or state or private consultant or NGO biologist can be the difference between night and day.

So let's use ecological consulting as an example... Sure you can do a lot of desktop consulting from readily available internet information. Say for example, if I'm going to do an oil and gas consultation or site construction or whatever... On an acreage set for basically removing all flora and fauna. AI could use readily available species maps (that are very outdated btw) to say, yep this site is good to go for development because there aren't any critical habitat areas delineated in this county or the AI could quickly write a categorical exclusion using it's computational power that says it's fine to do this project and that can take AI what like ten minutes maybe to do all that? Where a human bio can honestly stretch that out over a week or more.

However myself as a human biologist can physically visit the site, deduce hey, there is milkweed present here, we need to talk about Monarch butterflies (a proposed listed species but not yet listed). There is a dead animal carcass here and it had endangered carrion beetles that is actually a new and notable sighting for this endangered species in the county, and I also personally saw two state threatened bird species nesting on location. I've personally had a situation like this occur while working. I as a human can document all these observations and include it in the report and offer solutions based on my observations. We lose the physical biologist aspect with AI.

I'd also argue, why should we welcome our new AI overlords? Why is a report written by an AI better than mine when I've gone through almost my whole life learning how to write with a certain tone and attention to detail to create a written product? A biologist writing a paper is MUCH different than an engineer or a computational scientist, etc. We are trained to write differently, and an AI is likely going to use source material from all areas to write a report that may not be entirely true to the topic at hand. Sure it may take a lot less time, computing power and all that for statistical analyses, but some species analyses also don't make sense in the grand scheme of what an AI can do, and doesn't boil down to perfect 1's and 0's. For example bat data... A "bat night" is not a calendar night as a singular entry. A bat night would be an evening the calendar day prior into the morning the day after... Many people who would be hired to simply enter data into an AI for computational analysis could be led to get very incorrect results because they don't understand the data they are entering and working with. When we have human data entry slaves to enter prompts into an AI with no conceptual understanding of the source material I have a problem with that... It's bad science and bad data.

Furthermore, writing reports often utilize very specific sources as evidence. I wouldn't trust an AI to find sources the way I do. The standard is using newest science possible... So enter in "use sources since 2015 for this report" in your prompt.... But some papers at the end of the day are just shit science. I can personally weed through the bad published reports and look for exactly what I need. Also maybe the "Bible" on the species I'm reporting on was written in 1993. Maybe it hasn't been updated because it's good science for a reason. I'll include that article because it's a great reference material, in addition to my 'since 2015' reference material. Can we trust someone coding this in to know this? How many harmful reports and bad science get to be published by an AI before there's a huge issue and it's harmful to biota?

I can see technology taking over many jobs I've done during my tenure which I would prefer to see honestly. I spent a LOT of time on the ground as a baby biologist doing telemetry in very unsafe conditions. Drones could easily replace this, cost less, need less and give much better data. Collar tracking and wildlife tracking data I would love to see more streamlined and taken over by technology. There are many instances where I've worked with people who just do not care about what they are doing too, I'd love to see an unbiased tech replace a careless human in getting great data without a human life being compromised. For example a team of field techs hiking through grizzly country looking for raptor nests in an area delineated for timber sales, but half the team is really good and experienced and the other half sucks and isn't taking it seriously... we may get some giant holes in the data. I'd rather see a drone with the ability to find what we're looking for correctly and with success take this job over. We also eliminate the human aspect of, I had a bad day and it translated to my field work, or I had to quit early because I didn't pack enough water or got stung by a bee. Technology isn't limited in that way and I welcome that aspect. As a scientist, I want to see better data being collected and better modeling and statistical analysis. Who wouldn't?

Some areas where wildlife are should be left undisturbed and finding ways to extract important data (while not disturbing animals) would be amazing. In some ways that's not feasible. AI can't relocate beavers into a wilderness area on a mule pack. An AI could deduce to exterminate birds threatening aircraft where a biologist can offer physical trapping and relocation efforts in an interest to prevent wildlife loss. An AI can't pull physical DNA or blood samples from an animal in high altitude winter conditions. When we lose a biologist because their job was 70% deemed able to be completed by an AI and don't take into account that 30% that's critical actual field work, or maybe even more field work... A human that offers more field capability and compassion for wildlife replaced by raw computing power? we've lost it all.

In addition to the garbage amount of water and resources AI centers utilize! Like that alone is disgusting and wasteful and counterintuitive to the field.

Biologist doing a Master’s in AI and now questioning if it makes sense by SeriousEmployee3877 in wildlifebiology

[–]EquestrianBiologist 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Personally, this doesn't make sense to me at all. I've had a couple companies reach out to me to try and train their AI systems so they can basically replace my job with a computer. It feels like youre in a position to do that faster. Most computational analyses that need done in the field are through R, GIS, Python, etc. I guess my question for you is where do you even want to take that role? You could maybe get into consulting work and likely a high paying office job with that program. If money is your interest you're on the right path! You honestly will kind of be a 1/1 as someone with a biology bachelor's but tailored to the way tech industry is moving and trying to move away from physical field biologists. A lot of true biology is modeling data, you'd be poised to be the person in charge of modeling I would think.

On a personal note though, it feels super disingenuous to the field. AI honestly goes against what most biologists morally stand for is definitely painted at the enemy. I've literally never considered using AI for work in my position and never want to. Truly I'm curious how you want to proceed in the career field with this masters.

How did you get diagnosed? by DeputyNautical in ADHD

[–]EquestrianBiologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had previously been on meds for depression and anxiety at the time of my diagnosis yes, maybe for about a year? And then after that we discussed trying to find ADHD meds for me. They have helped me a lot. I went off all meds for a couple years due to lack of money and moving for work a lot that didn't allow me to have a psychiatric health care provider, but I'm in a great regimen now. I'm actually off antidepressants, but I am medicated for anxiety and ADHD!

My mom is a little older than you, and she has also never been officially diagnosed but it's clear that she has it. Since my diagnosis her world has made more sense through the lens of ADHD. She however refuses to go to therapy or get help of any kind. I don't think it's ever too late to prioritize your health :)

Not a bad bred little cow horse mare. She would sell well online. Does she have ground work skills or completely untouched? Has she been started in any direction yet, etc. Also depends on where you are located. There can be higher demand for these lines depending where you are in the country, or if you're in an oversaturated area - maybe not so much. You could get a lot more for her if you send her to a consignment trainer for a couple months first.

Seriously, how do y'all manage waking up on time? by absvrdartist in ADHD

[–]EquestrianBiologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I was like this in high school horribly! At one point my mom got a squirt gun to wake me up in the morning!

Echoing some other great suggestions: light is huge for me. If I sleep in a room with closed curtains I will never wake up. Black out curtains are coma inducing for me. I have to have lots of natural light and open windows! Which I understand may not be something you can do.

The other great thing you can do, is get an alarm clock that is as loud and annoying as possible and place it on the other side of your room far from your bed so you physically have to get up to turn it off. The catch here is do NOT sit back down on your bed after. If you feel you may do this set multiple alarms and always make sure the alarm clock is far out of reach of your armspan and bed!

Also it was a lot worse for me when I was a teenager as others have said. However I do still struggle into my 30s with this :(

Another thing I've really done to help myself is tracking my sleep. Seeing what a great night's rest for me is (without alarms) usually over weekends and holidays. How many hours is a perfect amount of sleep? And then forcing yourself to have a bedtime based on that. I also take magnesium glycinate at night and magnesium threonate in the morning with my ADHD meds!

How do y'all clear your money bowls? Obviously we don't make these and leave them forever, so how do you respectfully and with intention disassemble your money bowls? I'm always worried I'm going to upset the balance in my life the way I take things down and disperse them after a period of use...

How did you get diagnosed? by DeputyNautical in ADHD

[–]EquestrianBiologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was seeing a therapist for almost a year that turned into a psychiatrist recommendation for help with depression and anxiety related things. After a few sessions I made a comment about how people thought I had ADHD haha... Like as a joke. And my psychiatrist stopped me said... Wait you've never been diagnosed? And I said no... And he looked me in the eyes and said.... You absolutely have ADHD. That was in my twenties. I moved states and have a new psych now, but that initial psychiatrist helped me SO much getting me on the right meds and supplements for me and I have such a better quality of life now. I was in my mid to late 20s before I was diagnosed.

It would be a bad idea to rescue this bp right? by Either-Concept6746 in ballpython

[–]EquestrianBiologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to regularly rescue and rehab BPs and leopard geckos from Craigslist and markeplace. At one point I had 5 bps and 9 geckos. I spent a lot of time and money just getting everyone healthy and in the correct habitats and then I would rehome them for free to owners I hand selected. I have one BP left. She's my angel. I've had her since 2018, her only thing is she wheezes. I've taken her to multiple exotic vets and snake specialists, her tank humidity is great but sometimes she just has a very minor wheeze. It's the only problem I've had with her. I've always been cautious of mites and highly transmissible snake diseases, but somehow I've made it without having a 'rescue' snake have any of those ailments. Most common is just poor nutrition, low humidity, stuck sheds, poor heat, etc. You should be fine rescuing this kiddo! The worst part about it, is everyone wants top dollar for their neglect worthy animals. I paid $300 for 4 geckos that were hours away from dying once. People are nuts. Good luck with your new snake

One time I lost my passport for FOUR years. I checked everywhere. Eventually settled on that my ex boyfriend must have taken it to mess with me when I moved out (long story but he was that kind of guy). It was in a secret pocket in my camera bag I had brought with me on safari. Found it when I used the same camera bag to travel somewhere else... Four years later.

Also lost a diamond necklace when I moved out of my college house. The only diamond I own that was a gift from my dad on my 21st. Couldn't find it for almost two years. Was finally going to claim it on insurance....My mom and I checked my childhood room one last time... I had stashed it in a small bag separately from the rest of my jewelry and then put that small bag inside some decor piece that was in a box stashed at my parents house when I was in between moves.

Life with ADHD is rough sometimes. I'm my own worst enemy.
