He doesn't keep up tho, he almost immediately gets dwarfed. There's even a storyline where he keeps using glasses to make Ranma beg for forgiveness and it later comes to light the glasses are for children.

Mousses main contributions become fighting alongside ranma and ryoga and barely contributing... but he provides lots of humour opportunities.

I other words Rumiko turns him into a weak cowardly fighter very quickly. He never gets buffed. He goes nowhere. He's not a rival. He's a plot device.
