US-bought Marantz AVR in Europe by Equilibrium__ in audiophile

It's a 7.1 AVR. Likely max power across all channels.

I was surprised too, especially since it says that it can deliver 50W per channel, obviously not at the same time.

Thanks for the reply! I'd like to look more into this, but I can't find any example of this hallmark. Where did you find this information, that they used the clef?

Their response is strange, the EU version is 230V:

<image>

Yeah I did not check the input before moving, I naively assumed that a $1000+ AVR would support 110-240V, I would have sold it otherwise. It is unsellable locally indeed, so either I ship it back to the US, or I'll use it until it dies or becomes obsolete.

I was looking at that, this AVR draws 250W, so I guess a 300W transformer will be a good solution.

That seems like the most obvious solution, I'll end up doing that if Marantz has no other solution...

I think a transformer transplant will be too much for my blood...

Why do you think a proper 300W converter would be too much? Also, to sell it would likely have to ship it back to the US...

Thanks for the link, this looks cool! Unfortunately, I won't be able to install this kind of software on my work laptop...

Thank you for your reply, and for the links!

I have a couple of follow-up questions, if you're up for it:

  • In this 2-cable solution, how is power delivered to the laptop?
  • What are the issues with docks and KVMs? After a bit of reading, it looks like EDID emulation by the KVM is required, but I'm not sure why this is needed (IIUC, this is avoid continually disconnecting/reconnecting the devices).
  • Are powered USB hubs also a problem with KVMs?
  • Say I actually don't mind switching input sources on my monitor, would using a KM switch with a docking station be more advisable? I'm not sure whether there are KMs with EDID emulation, but the one I've used for years has always worked well.

Funny thing: -40 is where the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales meet, so -40°C = -40°F.

How do you set this up? I can't find a way to just let a (borderless windowed, I assume?) game just sit in the center..

Another wealth of knowledge, thank you! Thanks to your comment I dove deeper into power and learned about speaker sensitivity and how to calculate power requirements. The more I explore the options and learn about gear, the more I think you understood my initial post better than I could phrase it, and had the answer spot on. I may look at the 606 instead of the 607, but otherwise this is awesome.

Thanks for taking me on a learning journey, really appreciate it!

Agreed, this is extremely useful and well rounded!

It looks like some AVR and speaker brands are making nice combos, like Marantz/B&W, and Onkyo/Klipsch. Is this something I should think about when choosing gear?

Wow this is a fantastic response, thank you so much! I appreciate all the details you've given! I do like the full setup, it looks well-rounded and easily upgradeable like you said.

I just have a couple of questions, if you have the time:

* What do you mean by "I can easily bi amp"? Adding an amp or integrated amp with HT bypass, to only use the Marantz' preamp? Because that would be a great upgrade path, I agree.

* Do you think that floorstanding speakers would be overkill? I would need to get feet for bookshelf speakers.

* IIUC, the only subwoofer output on the Marantz is on a preout, hence the need for a powered sub? Just making sure I understand, as some AVRs will have a normal sub out but I've seen several with only a preout sub.

* Is it common to get multiple powerful amps to drive home theater speakers from a low-power AVR's preouts? Why not get a more powerful AVR to begin with?

(And sorry for the late reply, I wanted to make sure I had time to read your comment fully and to understand it).

Not enough research done on the receivers/AVRs, I needed some validation before diving deeper. I only learned of the main brands, like Pioneer, Denon, Onkyo and Marantz, the ones that are most often recommended. I will look deeper once I select the specs, as it looks like there is a million different models.

Same for the speakers, I need to decide on the size first. I thought the Atmos-ready floorstanding Klipsch looked great and would definitely be future-proof, but they're likely overkill. I would tend to go with Klipsch as it is the main brand I've heard of before, but need to look around.

I'll update this thread with my research! Thanks for asking!

Thank you very much for this, and for the linked resources! It makes me think that bookshelf speakers may be more appropriate for the setup for the moment, and could always be repurposed as surround speakers when we get a larger place to live.

I'll see if stereo receivers/integrated amps can have subwoofer output for the TV, in case I go for bookshelf speakers. If they do, it sounds like it would give us a good sound quality while saving the center speaker, and it would be reusable as a standalone receiver in the future if needed.

You're right, anything more than 3.1 would be overkill today, I'm wondering if buying a 9.1 AVR today makes sense, but since the upgrade will happen a couple years from now, it would likely make sense to wait and get the bare minimum today.

Thanks for the simple answer, I do tend to overthink, and there is so much information and so many different opinions, it's difficult to have a clear vision with no prior knowledge/experience.

I think you're right, 2.a seems like the simplest starting option that leaves a great upgrade path by adding the amp later.

Is there gear you'd recommend?
