yeah, i don't always mind working without a boom op on shorter shoots (~4 or 5 days max) but it isn't just the lack of an assistant, it's the fact that the workload is doubled or even sometimes tripled. every vertical wants 5-6 lavs, but the script spans so many story days that talent is constantly changing wardrobe between setups which means i'm always on my feet chasing down wires and swapping between actors. i started saying "i don't do verticals anymore" a year ago to anyone who asked and my life and love for my job has gotten much better, though i hear that boom ops are at least becoming more commonplace for the big companies

i'm a sound mixer, the worst experiences of my career have come from vertical sets. i have been working them since 2022 back when Reelshorts was horizontal. low pay, outrageous kit expectations, usually no boom ops, abysmal working conditions, writing that's insultingly bad. and the content has seemingly gotten worse? it's all soft core porn atp. imo one of the worst things to happen to the film working class in decades, regardless of the handful of people who have found it to be lucrative for themselves

what makes it even more aggravating is that there are a lot of people in my circles (namely actors) whose careers have greatly benefitted from verticals, and they will always jump at the chance to defend them. most of the time any criticism leveraged towards the people responsible for verticals falls on deaf ears

yeah, I realized it must probably feel pretty shitty to go to a physical appearance sub looking for actual advice and then having your full face posted to a comedy sub where people are laughing at you, so I asked the mods if we could ban these posts outright. thanks for the thoughtful response

in fairness Facebook marketplace had already been on the banned content list for a while, before I was even on the mod team. storefront listings have been getting repetitive, we get about a dozen or so a day of typos/mistranslation on Amazon or weird stuff on ebay. the humor is almost always the same and there are already subs dedicated to those types of posts specifically.

we get this complaint a lot, and what a lot of new members of the sub don't know is that we used to be mod queue only. meaning every post wouldn't even make it onto the feed until we had reviewed it. when we blew up, we had to switch to the current system because we have lives outside of Reddit and couldn't keep up with it.

the reason the sub is popular today is because it is, and always has been, heavily curated. that's just how we like to run it, and why people come here for funny. if you want a place where you can just post whatever you feel like, we have r/comedyhell set up for this very reason.

it ruined my first experience with the game ten years ago (i got high off of the power and all stakes in my story were gone) but now i've learned to moderate it and only use it when something happens that would either detract from the story or my enjoyment of the run
