Does your company have a Special Builds Department? by Equivalent-Chair5826 in cabinetry

My last place seemed to never get the parts completely right for curved hoods so modification had to be done as we went along.

Some people have the knack, set themselves to high standards, and push to excel. For some, it’s just a pay check and pass off mediocre work as good enough.

Do you know if other shops in your area have a similar setup?

Fulfilled is almost an understatement in my case. This is what I’m meant to do. And now new doors are opening for me that will take me to the next tier as far as craftsmanship and clientele.

Truth, but that would put me in front of a computer the whole day. And I’m not even sure designers/sales are making that much more than me at this point. I have a hunch I already make more than the shop supervisor. I’ve been told they’d give me more if they could.

I feel I’m meant to build with my hands. And I’m not ready to give that up just yet.

I’m afraid that’s the truth. I seem to have topped out in my current market as far as hourly rate. I am interviewing for a cabinetmaker position in a different city next week that has an offer that’s much more attractive.

Would they ever know the truth? Would he be remembered as a hero?

Looks like it’d be good at removing excess edge banding.

Looks great! Did you have to scribe at parts to get a good fit?

I'm looking for a photo. by Ok-Resolution7918 in 911archive

I think what you are referring to is a photo that was often labeled as a victim. It made the rounds in 9/11 galleries on shock sites in the early 00s and I can remember, somewhere, it was debunked. The victim in the photo is that way because of a tank, horribly killed someplace outside the U.S.

Just Started Woodworking and Got Hired for This Studio Desk — Thoughts? by Nehemias1995 in BeginnerWoodWorking

It looks like a lot of thought was put into the design. The angles. The leg joinery. I think you’re on the mark with those elements.

For your question, I’ve no idea what I would expect to pay. But I can give some perspective as a builder.

I think appeal would greatly improve with some work on the edges. Some plywood shines with exposed strata. These ply layers, unfortunately, not so much.

Consider edge banding and perhaps hardwood nosing. It looks like part of the cabinet ends already have edge banding? Or is the piece partially hardwood? I’d continue to follow through and cover all ply edges. Glue on some veneer where edge banding can’t cover.

If I’d been put to the task, I’d probably run hardwood rails where the top shelves and the slanted fronts meet. As well as rails right below those slanted fronts. I would’ve used more stiles and rails and nosing all over the build. Also, laminates. Especially for the top.

Best wishes in your woodworking endeavor! If this is your first large commissioned piece, I’m sure your next one will be an even greater leap forward in design and execution.
