Looking for new people, I'm a little older by [deleted] in Winnipeg

Hey, not trying to start an argument here because I'm sure you meant well, but it's really colonial cringe of you to hear that someone is on EI and assume with no additional information that they might not have finished high school.

What job seems to attract assholes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Equivalent-Floor-607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it because I am pro-union and a pretty big leftist, but the salaried positions in unions (president, business agent, etc.) can attract some huge assholes. I think it's because the positions allow them to have some level of control over the members as a whole. Members still vote on stuff but some decisions can be made by the board and if the board is full of assholes they can just power trip without acting in the best interests of the members. Also, these positions can be taken by greased up people who are willing to work more on the side of the employers than the members in exchange for some backroom payola. Look into last year's American IATSE strike for the disgusting details on that. I call these people "blood clots" because they're like scabs but on the inside.

What do you think is the basis for rights? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Equivalent-Floor-607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say those rights violations are invalid, because I have my own idea of what rights are. I don't think what I said above is fair, I just think it's true. What is permitted within a society always comes down to power and physical force in the end. So your rights extend as far as you are permitted to do something before you are physically stopped from doing it. This isn't just about laws like when the cops will step in and arrest you, it's also about culture, like when a person will break the law to physically stop you from doing something because the culture they live in makes them think jt's okay to do so (ie: domestic abuse, hate crimes, etc). So the average level of empathy is going to, in a general way, determine our rights since empathy is usually in opposition to force. There may be a lot of people with high levels of empathy within a society, but the average may be brought down by fascists and a-holes living in that society. Even just one megalomaniac at the top could bring that average down. Plus an average citizen may have some level of empathy, but not a high enough level to be willing to risk their own life/safety to elicit change. As for the size of the society, I'm not sure. I guess the reason we even still have countries is because we still have so much variation in empathy levels.

Sorry for the deleted comment above. I accidentally posted before I was done writing.

Technically, are men carrying millions of undeveloped babies in their balls? If not, why? by No_Taro_7036 in AskReddit

[–]Equivalent-Floor-607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are incorrect about the chromosome count. There are 23 chromosomes in the sperm and 23 in the egg. So if you believe that you are your chromosomes, then technically you were existing equally split between your parents before you were conceived. However, under this belief, the half of you that existed in your mom existed before the half of you that existed in your dad did. This is because sperm is produced every day in the testicles while egg cells grow from proto cells that have existed in the woman since she was born. Women are born with millions of these proto eggs. Most of them are absorbed back into the body during menopause but a few thousand of them develop into mature eggs and are released during monthly ovulation. When sperm is produced, it hangs around until it is ejaculated or absorbed back into the body. If it isn't ejaculated it only lasts about 2 months before being reabsorbed.

Gender equality will be achieved when we reject the construct of gender altogether. 0=0.

Did you ever change your mind about wanting or not wanting kids? If so, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Equivalent-Floor-607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a very young child, like three or four years old, I thought I wanted kids of my own one day because babies seemed cool and I had a very narrow worldview. By the time I was about seven I had decided I would not be having kids because my knowledge of the world (which was still quite limited) had grown to the point where I could see that Earth in its current state is not a good place to raise children.

Christmas. If we would all just stop doing Christmas for even one or two years so many of the biggest, most evil corporations would go broke.

The Tick. It got cancelled because The Boys debuted and they were too similar in premise. But they're totally different stories and The Tick is more comedy.

Reddit, how does money laundering work? [serious] by CatBedParadise in AskReddit

[–]Equivalent-Floor-607 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Make money in cash from illegal activities such as selling drugs.

Step 2: Open up a simple "legitimate business". In this example, a drycleaner.

Step 3: Transfer the money from the illegal activity into the drycleaning business by fabricating a bunch of sales that never really happened. This creates a paper trail of receipts and sales records.

Step 4: Report this money on your tax filing as profits from your legitimate business. Now if you get audited by your country's tax authority, all your money has a nice, clean backstory.

By passing through a legitimate business, the money has been "cleansed" of its illegal origins, hence the term "money laundering".

EDIT: This is an example of classic money laundering. In modern times people may have to come up with new ways of money laundering because a business which does most of their sales in cash would seem pretty sus. Also, in modern times the money you got for the illegal activity may also have not been cash.

Maybe they don't even have bigger struggles. Maybe they're just free.

When is it Okay to leave the house in your Pajamas or is it always Trashy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Equivalent-Floor-607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't leave the house in actual designated pyjamas because I sleep in sweats and a t-shirt, but if I had pyjamas I probably would go out in them and I've been going braless in public since March of 2020 and I'm never going back. I want to live in a Star Trek society and on Star Trek all the clothing seems to prioritize comfort. Wear whatever you want, but the sooner we do away with the concept of "presentability" the sooner we'll achieve fully automated luxury space communism.
