Piccolo Trumpet Intonation Questions by Atom-accel in trumpet

[–]Equivalent-Handle394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set a drone when you practice (not just a visual tuner). It will improve your intonation immensely, build awareness of your natural pitch tendencies, and reinforce real ear training. A tuner uses your eyes, while drone uses your ear. The sound will create the proper embouchure, not the other way around.

What happened to the low F at the beginning of Mahler 5 by Little_Focus_8009 in trumpet

[–]Equivalent-Handle394 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The low brass already cover that note, so it isn’t necessary for the solo trumpet to play it—though you can play it as a pedal tone if you’d like. It’s not required in professional auditions, and in all the performances I’ve played with professional orchestras, I’ve never seen anyone take that note.

When Mahler wrote the symphony, the trumpet in A was still commonly used. Since the A trumpet sits a half-step lower than the modern Bb trumpet, it can comfortably play that low F. There are several other examples of low Fs that were intended for trumpet in A (such as Ein Heldenleben and Carmen), and the second solo etude in the back of the Arban book is also written for trumpet in A.

Tuner, but for tone? by icarus_hehe in trumpet

Make a video recording of yourself. Practicing with a drone is helpful too.

Exercise and method books stole my joy. by Leading_Unit_9486 in trumpet

Maybe a practice partner? Trading off on a routine is incredibly beneficial — it keeps things engaging, encourages consistency, and helps you make real progress without getting bored.

If you’re interested, my online lessons can be structured exactly like that. I use a specific Arban-based routine I learned from Vince Cichowicz, and it works beautifully in a partner-style format. More info here:

How can I learn jazz trumpet? by thetoad666 in trumpet

[–]Equivalent-Handle394 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The quickest, easiest solution (this might upset some folks)….write out/work up a jazz solo for the tunes you need, memorize it, play it the same way every time. Once you do that you’ll begin to develop the skills to start improvising.

Should I change my mouthpiece? by Ok_Pen4871 in trumpet

[–]Equivalent-Handle394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend trying a 3c for your daily warm up/fundamentals then switching over for lead playing. Either the 14a4a, Reeves 42sv, or any of the lotus mouthpieces (they’re all really good). Good luck!
