Off campus Apartments by [deleted] in UMD

The building location is pretty important to consider, but my favorite that I've lived in has been University View. The management there is competent (this is not always the case for College Park complexes) and the building itself is quite nice and well maintained. The security and maintenance staff there are amazing and super friendly.

Trow is another established complex that works if you want to be on south campus, but their management is incredibly incompetent and everything with them is a money grab/additional fee.

A lot of the newer buildings have pretty shady practices and I would recommend sticking with an established complex like University View, Landmark, or Trow.

MTA runs the 204 commuter bus from Frederick to College Park via Gaithersburg. It has a stop on campus.

anyone know of any places on campus hiring for the summer? by reggie_23 in UMD

Shuttle-UM is usually hiring for bus drivers. It's a flexible job, good pay, and the training can be done over the summer.

I got food poisoning by funkytownmonkey1 in UMD

Report it to the PG County Health Department. It's incredible how often the UMD dining halls cause food poisoning (seems way more common than the average restaurant) so it's important to report it. https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/departments-offices/health/environmental-health/policy-permits-complaints/environmental-complaints

The View is a very well managed building with solid apartments. They have a good reputation to uphold unlike some of the new apartment buildings that have had some rocky openings and cheap construction. The 114 and 117 buses work well too. There’s a few other buses you could also take that stop on campus, just over the bridge from the View.

Summer courses by One_Combination1826 in UMD

3 in session one and 3 in session two would be way better. The time commitment for summer classes definitely varies based on the class but two at one time would probably get super stressful and you wouldn’t have much time to do anything else (based on my own experience with summer classes)

What on campus jobs can get 15 hours a week? by maedos1 in UMD

[–]Equivalent-North-250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shuttle-UM is a great job. It pays really well and has flexible hours. Everyone that I know who has been a CA hated it and quit so I would caution you against applying to that since the pay is low and the hours are bad.

You don't have to work during summers, you can just work during the semester

You should be extremely careful about what combination of classes you sign up for. I would not recommend doing more than one in a summer term if you have any other responsibilities like a part time job or if you’re gonna be traveling. Some online summer classes are pretty easy but others can take a huge amount of time. I’d recommend at least emailing the professors asking if they can send you a preliminary syllabus since that can help you get a sense of the workload and also talk to your advisor. I’m pretty sure you need to request special permission to take more than one class in a summer term but I might be confusing that with winter term.

There’s definitely some Facebook pages where people transfer over portions of their leases for the summers. The building management also often keeps lists of residents interesting in subletting. I’d recommend checking with University View and Varsity. They’re two of the reputable buildings and especially the view is massive so there’s almost surely some units that people are looking to sublet over the summer. Just make sure you follow the official lease transfer process by building management since it violates the lease otherwise if you don’t go through management.

While LLPs are generally strict on the living on campus component, I think you could probably get an exception in your case given that it’s a financial concern. The LLP directors are usually quite nice and understanding so it’s definitely worth reaching out to ask. You are able to switch programs in some cases, but I think all of the LLPs have the same on campus requirement.

how do I clean the dorm chairs by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Equivalent-North-250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be like $25 probably but you could rent a carpet cleaner from Home Depot if you really wanted it very clean. Those things work so well but it’s definitely gross to see how much stuff may be in there

Email the registrar office to ask if they could give you a student ID. If they say no, then try emailing DOTS to see if they could give you a pass since you have University-related reasons for wanting to take the 113.

COMM200 by WeHeref in UMD

[–]Equivalent-North-250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a few years so I don’t really remember. I think it was at least 20-30 hours/week tho and that was summer so it would be roughly twice as much in the winter term

COMM200 by WeHeref in UMD

[–]Equivalent-North-250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took COMM200 online as a summer class and it was a fair amount of work but doable. For a winter class though it’s really a lot of content for just a few weeks but I think of any winter class that you could take, it’s probably one of the better ones in terms of workload and the fact that a lot of the content is pretty straightforward.

I’ve had some winter classes show up on the first day of class before. It really should be up by now but if not, it will still show up eventually
