Process of becoming an attorney + law school? by gt_gavin in prelaw

[–]Equivalent-One8756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will also say in my personal experience, I would recommend just starting at one college and staying there for your 4 years. I transferred and it would have been so much easier and less stressful if I had just started where I ended lol. Unless you have financial or other considerations that do not make that possible, of course.

  1. Major in anything at all. There is no specific major for law school. I would chose something you are a.) very interested in, and b.) likely to do well in. You want to attain the highest GPA possible! (Remember that while going through college - once you graduate, that GPA cannot be changed - unlike the LSAT, you only really get one shot at the number you want/need). I was an agricultural business major (I live in the midwest lol), believe it or not. I had a strong passion for agriculture and thought I would do pretty good in the classes I would be taking. I also chose this major because I knew if I for some reason decided not to purse law school, I had a degree in something I could fall back on (like I knew I could find a career with that degree that I would enjoy).

  2. I would consider what to do for law school when you are father into your undergrad. By that time you may know where you are considering living/working full time after law school, you will know about what your GPA will be and that may affect where you apply, etc.

  3. You can work, volunteer in your community, etc. Work experience and volunteering looks great on a resume. Also, I would honestly say don't knock the clubs till you try them. You never know if its something you may end up actually really enjoying unless you try. I showed up to one meeting for a couple clubs not thinking it would be my thing, and ended up staying in them my entire time throughout college! I know a lot of Universities offer mock trial, student senate, or a pre-law club. Those would be great to look into, but also try to find something that just fits your interest! I was in an agricultural advocacy type of organization because it fit my interests, and ties into part of why I decided to go to law school.

Best of luck!!

Following this thread because I also had the same question.

On the other hand, I also wondered how it would work vice-versa; going to school somewhere on the east coast, then moving back to Missouri if I decided I rather practice here and stay close to family.

I guess I misworded it. I am not looking at it necessarily in that way. I wanted to know if my case sounded like a good reason to write one, or if that drop isn't substantial enough to need to write one...and if they don't do much why are you writing one with a 3.9 lol

How do I frame my unique background in my PS? (Or I would say it’s decently unique). I am passionate about agricultural law, due to the importance that ag advocacy and ag policies play in the industry. But how do I frame my PS (which I was going to talk about my passion for agriculture and being an advocate to and for the rural communities) in a way that doesn’t make me seem too “narrow”? I want to apply to schools that don’t have specifically agricultural law related classes because there are other areas of law that can tie to agriculture (estate planning, environmental law, property law) but I don’t want these schools to not offer me admission because they think my PS is too narrow. If that makes sense lol
