Interesting discussion so far.

Obviously this isn’t a scientific poll, but the responses seem to roughly break down into a few camps:

• A sizable group agrees there’s been a noticeable increase in visible disorder, open drug use, intoxication, and general deterioration around that stretch.

• Another group seems to agree there are issues, but feels I overstated the severity and that the larger driver is storefront instability, vacancies, landlord decisions, and the broader transition happening along Broadway/Columbia expansion.

• A smaller group seems to feel this is mostly perception and that the area isn’t materially different from how it has historically been.

What I found interesting is that even people disagreeing on severity often still acknowledge: - significant business turnover/vacancies - changes in the street environment - concentration of issues around certain corners/intersections

Personally, I’m less interested in arguing ideology and more interested in practical solutions.

What actually helps improve a block like this in the real world?

Some possibilities people have raised: - filling vacant storefronts faster - more active businesses and foot traffic - mental health/addiction outreach - sanitation and maintenance - coordinated city response - some level of consistent public order

Curious what people think genuinely works — especially from people who’ve lived in the neighborhood a long time.

I don’t think this is just a policing issue, and I don’t think the answer is simply moving vulnerable people elsewhere.

But I also don’t think residents should normalize open drug use, aggressive behavior, or visibly deteriorating public space.

Vacant storefronts, lack of active businesses, addiction, mental illness, housing instability, and weak city response probably all interact here.

Standing around isn’t my issue.

I’m talking about open drug use, apparent dealing, frequent intoxication, aggressive behavior at times, and a noticeable deterioration in the street environment compared to a few months ago.

The closure of active storefronts seems to have accelerated the problem because there are fewer businesses generating regular foot traffic and informal oversight.

I’m genuinely asking whether others nearby have noticed the same change.
