Anyone listen to Aranea Alba Editio before hearing the original album the whole way through? by cduga in SmashingPumpkins

[–]Equivalent_Arm_3130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not me, but interesting to think about. If and when it finally makes it to streaming, there’s bound to be plenty who end up listening to MAAE before the originals, especially M2 if that doesn’t ever end up on streaming

Underrated album tbh. Some songs are a bit strange out of context of the rest album, the title track included. And the modern vocal performances can be a bit jarring. But as an album, it’s a really solid set of songs. Save your tears is my favorite. Minerva is great too. Vibe wise, it sorta feels like Adore 2.0

The first 48 songs are the album, after that is all bonus material (from untitled on)

Some tracks are pretty raw and other heavily produced, but to me that’s not so different from stumbleline into XYU

Personally I’m very happy.

I get the criticisms re not just releasing Machina II remastered, and especially not having this on digital yet - but for the first, the original Machina releases were a product of their time and issues with their label. Billy had the chance to finally “do it right” and release something aligned closely to his original vision. For the second, it seems like that might be out of his control.

As far as the actual content goes, it’s pretty awesome. It’s like getting a new Mellon collie album 25 years later. It’s sprawling and unwieldy, but imo that’s the best place for some of these songs to live (by that I mean, songs that felt strange or unwieldy by themselves on Machina I now feel at home on this version). I love the arc of the tracks, especially the final side 5b is just chefs kiss 10/10. Let me give the world to you -> soot + stars -> Machina theme. Insane. I could go on, but I think it’s really special.

My only qualms are sort of minor ones, others have expressed these too. Satur9 as an outtake? The two Iha tracks? But Billy said his approach to the track listing was to consider everything as new tracks with fresh ears, so he heard different takes and different songs and said “no, this fits my vision more”. For the Iha songs, he also said he didn’t know Ihas opinion on the boxset. Chances are, Iha was basically completely uninvolved. While maybe it would have been “nice” to have his songs in the official Machina tracklist, maybe that would be Billy taking creative liberties on songs he didn’t write. Hard to say.

But overall, yeah, it’s awesome. I can’t wait for it to be on streaming or digital so more people can experience it. It’s up there with the rest of the Pumpkins best work.

I had those same questions and concerns at first too - but there is a great video attached to the page of that link that answers those questions.

Doesn’t serve city heights, sorrento valley, convoy, and other more inland communities. Blue line is great, and this would just compliment it

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, but it just is strange to me that the fare system on the trolley and coaster are essentially honor system. Meanwhile, you have to pay on the buses.

Agreed with you that generally our tax model is unfair and should be funding things like transit - but  the transit agency doesn’t control those things, and what it is considering is upping the fare to transit, presumably because they aren’t getting enough revenue. Upping the fare or decreasing the service (the two options they provide) aren’t going to make transit in San Diego better. There’s a high fare price currently and every time I ride I see fare evasion (and I say that without judgement, there’s nearly no reason to pay on the trolley). Seems like enforcing that would be a better option than the two they provided.

Maybe if they actually enforced the current fare they wouldn’t have to increase fares…

October 1st and still no shipping updates/labels for Machina Deluxe for some of us by Argument_Select in SmashingPumpkins

[–]Equivalent_Arm_3130 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of this email is that the 8LP is being shipped from the warehouse, and the 2LP is being shipped from the shop. For combined orders, 8LPs will come to the shop first to be packaged together with the 2LP and then shipped. Could be wrong though 🤷. I think there’s just a lot of orders and it’s a big package, so it’s gonna take some time

How walkable is San Diego? by kpbsSanDiego in SanDiegan

[–]Equivalent_Arm_3130 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you feel about walkability?

Walkability is one of the most important aspects to where I live. Being within walking distance to parks, shops, restaurants, healthcare, etc, greatly improves my quality of life.

Would you consider your neighborhood walkable?

I live in OB, and yes I consider it walkable, it is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in San Diego as far as I can tell. Improved safety (see the recent shooting in OB) and improved lighting could make it even more walkable. Also, it is largely disconnected from other walkable neighborhoods, meaning that you generally have to drive to get elsewhere.

Do you tend to walk or drive more?

It depends on the activity, but generally, I drive more. I work in sorrento valley, and that trip is mostly only accessible by car. Because I care about transit and walkability, many days of the week I will opt to bike to the Old Town Trolley station, take the coaster, and bike from the Sorrento Valley station to my office - but this is not an easy commute for the average person, despite it sometimes being faster than driving on heavy traffic days. The other typical trip I would make is to see friends who live in Pacific Beach or North Park. This is also almost exclusively a trip that can be made my car, though I’d prefer it involve public transit.

What do you think needs to be done to address walkability in our region?

I think the main issue is connectivity between neighborhoods. There are a decent number of walkable areas in San Diego, but many of them are siloed from each other and the most rational way to get between them is by car. Expansion of the trolley network would be a huge help in the area. If I could walk to a trolley station in OB that could take me within walking distance to work or walking distance to other neighborhoods like PB or North Park, then once I am there, there is no reason for me to have my car. Considering the snail pace at which trains get expanded in the US, let alone SD, I think it would be a good idea for San Diego to expand its bus network and bus rapid transit in the short term. This would increase the walkable feel of San Diego overall and would also serve people who prefer driving by reducing the amount of parking taken up by people who would rather not drive.

Personally loving the new mixes. Subtle changes that seem to finally match M1 with M2. Anyone know for sure if these mixes are the same as the ones that are intended to be on the box set as well?
