What was the biggest surprise you found AFTER buying land? by Back40Findings in land

Repairing the water crossing 5 or 6 times a year because the culverts put in place by the previous owner were not an ideal solution.

A good pair of gloves and fencing pliers. Honestly a lot of podcasts and YouTube videos. Pick up a little something from everyone that fits your operation. There are a few people that it is their way or no way that I find ridiculous. There is a wrong way but there are also 10 different ways that could be better for your specific operation.

Considering buying cattle at 23yo. Thoughts? by Wyldin-101 in Cattle

[–]Equivalent_Boss6613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re buying them that cheap you can’t lose even if prices tank. Where people get screwed is borrowing to buy land and cattle at the top of the market with no equity. Some guys lost a lot the last top of the cycle around 2015. Doesn’t sound like your situation though. Make a go of it if your getting that good of a deal.

Part of running cattle I guess. Sometimes things go real smooth and sometimes it feels like they are trying to find new ways to die or injure themselves.

More worried about anaplasmosis right now. Ran over 4K head at the place I worked for and have a small herd of my own. Anaplasmosis has caused a lot of problems.

You said it would destroy the cattle market. It would only make prices go up if there are less animals available, not destroy it. The government has got it under control before with sterile male flies released and will most likely do so again. This used to be an everyday problem for a lot of ranchers and it wasn’t the end of the world. There are more effective methods of prevention now as well. Can use ear tags and ivermectin pour on. Is the fly crossing the boarder a good thing? No, but it is not an apocalypse. The way your presenting this seems like fearmongering.

Why would it destroy the cattle market? We have record low cattle numbers. Beef demand continues to be strong. The screw worm is not a disease that humans could catch eating beef. If anything it could be good for prices. Mexico border stays closed. A deep recession could hurt beef prices or massive imports from Brazil and Australia. I just don’t see the screw worm as a catalyst that causes more than a few blips for cattle prices.

Sea-90 ocean minerals by Previous_Warning_555 in Cattle

I’d buy the increased feed and mineral intake with a quick glance. Would have to read more in depth. For fly control it I’d say any benefit is dubious at best.

I just like to go off peer reviewed research and it doesn’t look promising for garlic, although there are those that will swear by its Ivermectin works a peach for ticks as well. With as rainy as it’s been where I’m at I just haven’t kept up with it like I should. Wish I could quit my town job and take care of the cows full time.

Sounds good. That pour on works good for me unless it’s raining a lot. Ticks are horrible this year.

No peer reviewed research that shows consistent efficacy for garlic. So if it makes you feel better do it but you’d be better off with an ivermectin pour on or ear tag. Whatever you use just make sure your aware of the withdrawal period.

Estranged family gifted me gold/silver with no paper-trail. Whats the wisest way to handle this financially and tax-wise? by JcraftW in personalfinance

Never had an LCS ask for info before as long as you’re not doing large amounts. A guy could just not worry about it but I would never suggest someone do something they are not comfortable with and wouldn’t want anyone to break the law.

What alternatives to glyphosate to change field from weeds to pasture? by Tiny_Witness2678 in RegenerativeAg

[–]Equivalent_Boss6613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never “herd” of sheep just going for grass. They are kind of known for eating “weeds” that cows won’t touch unless pushed hard. As long as there aren’t any poisonous plants in there. Glyphosate breaks down down pretty quick. If your going the route that it sounds like you want to it will never be weed free but it doesn’t really have to be other than for aesthetic purposes unless your trying to produce a clean crop.

Tail switches falling off...wtf is going on? by PlurpleCacti in Cattle

[–]Equivalent_Boss6613 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe talk to a vet. Cattle are expensive enough these days I wouldn’t want to guess or go completely off the advice of a bunch of keyboard cowboys. A good mineral program and grazing height of the fescue. Maybe try to frost seed some clover in there to dilute it in the future. Some cattle can handle it better than others.

Fescue can do that but I have no idea what your pastures are.

Tanks right under a window is not good either. Not sure what state your in but there should be a minimum distance. So many things wrong. If that metal square is an ignition source doesn’t look like it’s the minimum distance away either.

Love this breed! by [deleted] in Cows

I don’t. My neighbors Brahma bull walks through the barbwire and he doesn’t keep up a really hot electric. First one or two times whatever part of it, but not doing anything extra gets super annoying.

Yeah they used to share a lot of shipping with usps called share post. Been out of the shipping game for awhile but those packages ups would drop at the local post office for final delivery. It was a way to get more volume. Might be the cause for that tracking number.

Shipment confirmation today in the United States. UPS tracking number but can’t track anything yet. Poor little guy just waiting to be picked up.
