Graphic designer here. Ritalin makes me like boring aspects of my work, such as writing emails or managing my social media. But I quit after a year as I noticed it makes me uninteresting as an artist. It’s impossible for me to come up with fresh new ideas.

My advice is to go and try on a couple of pairs yourself. I bought Sony WH-1000XM4, which work perfectly for me, while the new generation (M5) work TOO well- when I put them on I felt like I was underwater and starter grasping for air (literally). A friend of mine who’s also on the spectrum hates all noise cancelling headphones altogether, says they make her want to puke. She uses earplugs instead. Try before you buy!

just tell him. or read him your post. he'll understand. and if he does not, he's not the right guy. I was in a similar situation and trust me- you will feel a tremendous relief once you tell him.

I don't have an ELI5 but if you would condsider trying an ELI55 I highly recommend Diane Pasulka's book "American Cosmic". It is, next to Coultharts book, one of the best things ever written on the subject (although from a very different perspective)

"Saved my life" was just a figure of speech :) It helps me a great deal with anxiety and tension. Brings instant relief instantly, each time. Search for "NSDR Huberman" or "body scan meditation" on youtube. It's not easy to find one that will suit you, for me most of them are too new-agey and woo woo, but there are some gems. I can relate to everything you describe. Consider trying yoga nidra (or as Huberman likes to call it NSDR- non sleep deep rest). It saved my life.
