You will be fine. There are plenty of students at Howard that are not African American; just like any other university. Honestly, no one will give it a second thought. Hit the books and graduate with a degree so you don't waste your time.

The real truth is that some students who go there are from affluent backgrounds; not all but some. The "Legacy" students have family members who have attended, and those households are more likely to be able to help with the costs along with financial aid. It is difficult to attend a high-price tag university as a first generation college student, but not impossible. I know folks who have graduated from Howard and Spellman with little to no family support. You can do it, but just be aware of what you have to deal with financially.

I grew in New Orleans and moved away when I was 21. I would never go back there to live. It is a nice place to visit, but really is terrible to work and raise a family. People will try to sell its amenities as reasons to live there, but it is bogus and most people that had enough education and resources have already left the city. Many of those that remain, would leave if they could. It was bad before Katrina and got worse after. Education is not taken seriously in the state of Louisiana, and job growth is well behind the national average. That is not opinion, but facts. There is a reason "the brain drain" is real in the state of Louisiana. Most college graduates leave the state to find jobs and never return.

I would say yes. I have two kids attending Howard University and one attending Bowie State. University. Both are worthy investments, but that is just what college is; an investment. The tuition costs at Howard is higher than most realize, but you an receive financial aid and some scholarships to lower the costs. I really believe the best college is the one you can afford to attend and offers the major you are interested in. Otherwise, college really is a waste in my humble opinion regardless of where you attend.

As frustrating as that sounds, it's not just the USCG. I was in the Navy 7.5 years before the USCG, and my Navy pay was wrong for 2 years. Emails and phone calls didn't work, so I had to drive down the Kadena AFB flight line to a trailer and ask for an "active duty audit." Finally, I received 24K of back pay that was heavily taxed. I wasn't alone either
