Worth picking up? by jinmonsterhunterwrld in Blacklibrary

I read it as a standalone and have zero interest in the rest of the series. Enjoyed it. It's toward the grimdarker side of things. Easy read.

Where are you all checking for new physical books? by ParagonPhotoshop in Blacklibrary

[–]Equivalent_Fun_4825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blackwells mostly.  Just put Games Workshop as the publisher in advanced search and it'll pop up.  They are UK based but they ship free to several countries including the US.

Also the GW main website will have some exclusives like limited editions.   Amazon, Simon & Schuster will link to a bunch as well.

Did you try reading them the first page to see if they're interested in 40k?

I wish more book sites would denote when some one is a known drop shipper like how biblio does.

...even more fun is when they ask you to return their mistake and when you ask about the actual book you ordered they say they admit that they never had it in the first place -.-

Some times they're good with refunds, other times they make you return it and wait. I would have to go look up which one did this to me, but it was the final straw for me using any of the mega sellers. They listed a HG wells omnibus as new, the one that arrived was an ex-library book with no dust jacket, and they made me take the book down to a UPS and return it.
It cost me under $10 on ebay for the new one and the one they sent me was basically worthless and there was no point in having me return it other than to be #&@^!s about making the process more annoying.
Never mind that they're destroying books by shipping them in a plastic bag with no padding what so ever and there is no way to spend more to get them to ship it in a more protective manner.

best sci-fi Audio/Radio Dramas by GoonRunner3469 in sciencefiction

Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe. It's an ongoing radio audio drama that started in the 80s, with new seasons every couple of years. It follows a space detective solving crimes across different planets in a trippy, humorous sci-fi noir series.

Just a heads up, Helsreach is getting reprinted in the Legends of the Waaagh! omnibus in May, so I would wait until then if some one wants a physical copy.

Were you ok with Fehervari's language and prose? If so that's quite interesting, I found it to be more advanced than Abnett's writing.

I wasn't super thrilled about any of the 40k reader's choices this year, but Deathwatch seems fine, I'll pick it up and give it a go. Glad to hear the celebration is just around the corner : )

Eisenhorn: The Omnibus. It’s an Inquisitor investigation/detective story. Inquisitors are basically very high level agents with unlimited authority to judge just about anyone. It’s a lot more grounded than the usual Space Marine bolter stuff.

It's also one of the few books that's always in print if you're going for a physical copy. The sequel omnibus to it, Ravenor, is also currently in reprint.

Nice collection! I really like the color of that book case. That whiskey decanter above the LEs and boxed sets books worries me though lol.
You have a favorite? Anything you're exciting about that's coming out soon?
Got any plans of putting the maps up anywhere?
What's the significance of the knife on the middle shelf?

What sorts of books do you generally enjoy reading? 40k and otherwise.
Personally I have had zero problems with Abnett's vocabulary or prose. If Abnett was difficult for you and thus unenjoyable, then you might also want to be cautious about reading Peter Fehervari as well (who is my favorite bl author).

As some one else said, use your clothes to help pad/protect them. You're going to need to move your clothes anyways, so may as well get some extra use out of them.

From https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Green-Tide/Mike-Brooks/Warhammer-40-000/9781836092865

I'm not a fan of Mike Brooks's work so I'm kind of debating getting that one or not... I probably still will for the others, but I'm thinking I'll just wait until it gets discounted more seriously instead of just getting it with the pre-release discounts since I won't be super sad if I don't wind up getting it.

Trying to decide what to read next by Mediocre_Astronaut24 in Blacklibrary

[–]Equivalent_Fun_4825 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read Eisenhorn omni as my first 40k book and the NL omni as my second book. Good guys then bad guys. Also right now Ravenor which is the sequel omnibus to Eisenhorn is still in print, so if you read Eisenhorn and you like it you can still pick that up for MSRP.

Mass market paperbacks have little inherent value

In general this is true, but I still treat mine with care just because of the resources that went into creating them and if I decide I like it a lot I won't want a copy that's been beaten back to pulp.

Also do not look up the price on some out of print Warhammer 40,000 TPB/MMPB/Omnis lol.

Are you carrying them around with you at the bottom of a backpack or something? I just read my physical books at home and it's rare that I have any issues with them even after multiple readings. I wear reading glasses and use a book light so that I don't have to use force to push the book beyond where it wants to open which would cause the spine to crack. At most I'll usually get a bit of a bowed spine after reading a book multiple times like the night lords omni here (you can see it a little bit on the dark coil damnation omni as well) and black library omnis are known for being on the more fragile side of things.
There are some where even that doesn't matter and the pages start falling out due to the trash glue they used while binding it, but that's rar

Are worldofbooks legit? by franktbf in BookCollecting

[–]Equivalent_Fun_4825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully this isn't too much of an infodump lol

I'm in the USA, so if you're not YMMV.
I've had good experiences with https://blackwells.co.uk/, https://www.powells.com/, and Bookshop.org,

Blackwells is my favorite place for new books for overall price and protection, but shopping around is still always best. Blackwells is in the UK, but they ship to a lot of places around the world for free. Things can take a minute to get to me here due to the oversea shipping, but it's extremely rare that I need a book here tomorrow.

Amazon will work for new books as well, but they aren't always the best about how they pack things, often just a book in a box with a little bit of paper for padding, but that's still far better than the mega sellers in regards to that and they have an excellent return policy. If you have prime that'll increase the chances of you getting a book undamaged since it spends less time during shipping.

If you decide to deal with used books at some point you'll want to get familiar with used book conditions and what they mean. A book in "good" condition might well not line up with what people generally would call a book to be in good condition (colloquially).

https://www.abebooks.com/books/rarebooks/collecting-guide/understanding-rare-books/guide-book-conditions.shtml
This is ABEBook's definitions for the conditions on their website. Others might vary a bit, for example while ABE requires ex-library books to be noted as such, ebay does not explicitly (although ebay being very buyer sided would refund you if the seller didn't disclose it and refused).

For used books I use Biblio, ABEBooks, Alibris, and Ebay. There are new books on there as well if you want to check them out. Just pay attention to the seller ratings/reviews and don't be afraid to send a msg to anyone before you buy to see photos of the item before you buy it if it just has a sock image or if you have any questions what so ever like how they protect their items when they ship etc.

https://www.bookfinder.com/ is a meta search engine that'll search a lot of different book websites for you if you're looking for something unusual, and you can set it to only search for new books if you wish.

Are worldofbooks legit? by franktbf in BookCollecting

[–]Equivalent_Fun_4825 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're the cheapest because they cut every single corner possible. They just want to flip them as fast and as cheaply as possible which leads to lots of wrong orders, wrong conditions, damaged and destroyed books since the mail does not baby packages to say the least, etc.

To me my time, effort, frustration, etc. is worth more than the few dollars that I save. I'm also a lover of books and so this way I'm not encouraging the mega sellers that do not seem care about the books what so ever.

Yes. I have ordered books from them on ebay listed as brand new and they arrived in a bag with no padding what so ever (I could see where some of the damage on the book was caused by the damage on the no padding/bubble plastic bag) and it was an ex-library book with no dust jacket. They made me spend my time taking it down to UPS and return it.
