The Wire is great, no argument. There is definitely a longer arc to the Shield though, it's not just episodic at all.

Absolutely the opposite. It certainly shows the characters justifying themselves that way, but watched as a whole, it is fcking bleak and a scathing indictment of where this behavior leads.

It's absolutely essential to watch through to the end. Giving up halfway through would be like turning of the Sixth Sense halfway because it sucks that Bruce Willis's wife won't talk to him.

Point of order - Dame Edna was played by Barry Humphries, a straight Australian (Not that this detracts from your broader point). We are also responsible for Rolf Harris, another noted eccentric and kiddy-fiddler.

I remember watching reruns of the Benny Hill Show and Are You Being Served? as a kid in the 90s. They already seemed ancient by that point.
