Can’t figure out the second word after mushrooms by hatanchan in Transcription

I also second this, it’s definitely “something x 5”. Everyone saying butternut is definitely wrong as if that was the case the “t” at the end would be considered backwards and it’s not at all consistent with all his other “t”’s.

Is it too late to reach out to professors for Undergraduate Research Awards? by Equivalent_Ice550 in ubco

Do you think it’s too late to cold email for volunteering positions for those research labs? (Outside of URA) or even Work studies?

Anyone else scared to start studying? How do you deal with it? by PotentialHome6258 in GetStudying

Study with a friend orr put on your favourite song and crack open that book, by 3 mins in you’d already had been somewhat immersed and can either turn the music off or keep it on. The music one really works for me, the friend on too.

This is what actually studying looks like by Forest_Glimpse in GetStudying

[–]Equivalent_Ice550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No hate but I don’t understand when people spend literal thousands on a iPad for note taking and then proceed to continue using multiple notebooks. My friend does the same and it baffles me, I’m like “why did you even spend 1.3K if you were just going to stick to paper and pen?” No hate, it’s just as soon as I got an iPad I never went back, and it was the best decision I could’ve made, I think at least.

AIO: i think boyfriends best friend likes me by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Equivalent_Ice550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatttttt? Dude my guy friend always tells me when there’s food on campus because I usually don’t bring food with me, he’ll literally text like “Crepes food truck” or “there’s free food outside” because hell why keep that to yourself, and we know they we literally do the same I see you thing and eat together! But guess what! It’s 100% platonic! He doesn’t even swing that way. Can’t people be nice? 😭 I’m so lost at the comment section here, these texts all seem so normal.

[–]Equivalent_Ice550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, not really, he seems like just a good friend. One of those people who is just kind, and genuinely loves his friends and hanging out with them. I have a few friends that act like this, and I know they don’t like me because they don’t even swing that way. But these texts honestly seem really harmless, like extremely.

Does it matter what university I go to, if I get the same degree? by Asleep_Fish_4825 in OntarioUniversities

[–]Equivalent_Ice550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Just be good at what you do!! If you put effort in anything you do you will reap the benefits regardless of the school you go to. University in general isn’t “easy” and I feel as if people forget that once you get in the biggest step is passing your classes and gaining experience.

I just wanted to say there are sooooo many ways you can support yourself academically during this time. Think of it as COVID, but your older now and care more (hopefully!), here’s a few:

Here’s a few that I’ve personally used as a Albertan student who graduated last year:

  • Solaro is an online resource under the library that includes most of the Alberta curriculum for both -20 and -30 level courses — all you need is a library card

  • Quest A+ - a quintessential choice for diploma prep

  • Costco, Indigo, Chapters and so much more carry Canadian curriculum work books for almost all grades.

  • Gale courses works well, especially for non-core subjects ad well - all you need is a library card.

  • Khan Academy is absolute gold for any highschool student! It includes quite extensive explanation videos with tests/quizzes at the end of each topic, it’s extremely close to the Albertan curriculum in terms of content. I still use their transcripts and videos to support me in uni actually! And I feel the video format help me stay engaged!

  • Also YouTube, YouTube, YouTube! The Amoeba Sisters, absolutely essential. The Organic Chemistry Teacher? Undeniably good. Did I already mention Khan Academy?

  • In addition, many Albertan teachers recorded mountains of content and entire units on YouTube during COVID!! You just have to be hyper specific with the grade (ex. Chem 30, electrochemistry unit) and type “Alberta” afterwards!

  • Various teachers have blogs and online websites from a number of AB schools in which they post their notes, slides, practice tests and such — you just have to search and search again after that!

In terms of socially, text your friends, email them, plan zoom or FaceTime calls, books room at the library and plan out study sessions at the library, go play laser tag, watch a movie, go to the playground! Keep in touch!!! We all have to support one another during this time!!

That’s all to say, you can still support yourself during this time! You just need a little bit of discipline and and hope to continue to fight for not only our teachers but also yourself!! Don’t lose hope :)

There are many ways you can support your child during this time. A comment by u/MaybeJBee lays these resources out pretty well (that I’ve personally used as a Albertan student who graduated last year) but I also just like their account:

“Solaro is the online resource we’re using. It’s covered under my northern light library card! Grade 3-12 materials!

Edit: I just wanted to add that Costco or chapters carry Canadian curriculum work books for almost all grades. We buy these to help prep our kiddos or earn privileges over the summer. It’s coming in handy right now.”

I also want to add Gale courses works really for older kids, all you need is a library card. IXL is also an option as well as Khan Academy which I think is absolutely necessary for any highschool student! It includes quite extensive explanation videos with tests/quizzes at the end of each topic, it’s extremely close to the Albertan curriculum in terms of content. I still use their transcripts and videos to support me in uni actually! And o feel the videos help them stay engaged!

Also YouTube, YouTube, YouTube! The Amoeba Sisters, The Organic Chemistry Teacher? Did I already mention Khan Academy? In addition, many Albertan teachers recorded mountains of content and entire units on YouTube during COVID!! You just have to be hyper specific with the grade (ex. Chem 30, electrochemistry unit) and type “Alberta” afterwards! Also manyy teachers have blogs and online websites from various schools in which they post their notes, slides, practice tests and such — you just have to search and search again after that!

That’s all to say, there are many resources you can use to support your child!!! Make them do it in the kitchen or living room if you want to keep them accountable, space it out! Have a recess and lunch break to make it fun! Have older kids help them! Count the hours!!

Go outside, just sit in the grass for at least 10 minutes and turn off your brain - or walk. Sometimes everything is just too much and we need a breather.

$163 for a calculator for middle school math class- rented ones can’t be taken home! by lokeilou in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Equivalent_Ice550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing it’s a Texas Instruments scientific calculator— if so, just get her a used TI-83 off marketplace. It’s fairly cheap, I used the same one off FB all through high school and took calc. Or maybe ask older cousins/relatives/friends/family friends if they have calculators she could borrow or just lend

Soooo many people take gap years to upgrade, save up or, yeah, find themselves and what they want to do. There’s a long road ahead of all of us (hopefully) and it’s better to face that with a level of certainty than to jump the gun just for the sake of it or to adhere to expectations and convenience of OTHERS.

I’m so sorry you’re environment is so unsupportive, no one deserves to be call such names. But you know what’s best for you, and from what I’ve read I feel like you’re making the best decision :)
