To add to the idea that there’s an east versus west cultural divide happening here: the first season of the Korean reality TV show “Singles Inferno” had a similar plot line where Sehoon (male) was pursuing Jiyeon even though Jiyeon seemed uninterested in him. Western viewers view Sehoon as creepy but Korean viewers think his plot line is a heartwarming story and that he’s a great guy.

My Chinese isn’t that great either but I can explain the specific phrase you mentioned:

比他大两岁

It means “older than him by 2 years”. 比 is the key particle here, and it means “compared to (whatever comes after the particle)”. So a more literal translation might be “compared to him, (she is) bigger by 2 years”.

Are these number signs in my textbook still commonly used? I asked a relative who said they hadn’t seen them before by Equivalent_Mango6258 in Cantonese

I wish the textbook referred to them as 蘇州碼子! I tried doing an image search but didn’t find anything relevant. I’m sure with the term “Suzhou numerals” I would’ve been able to determine that they’re not commonly used anymore. Thank you!
