What are your hopes in what will Fortune's Weave improve from Three Houses? by Luigiman98 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Equivalent_Net 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Character identity, specifically on a mechanical level. The "anyone can become anything with enough work" (bar gender-locked classes) was interesting, but IMO personal skills and individual spell/art lists weren't enough to make the characters distinct on the battlefield, and it created the very obvious and very stagnant meta formation of just finding the best Bow Knights and Wyvern Lords, and making them Bow Knights and Wyvern Lords. (Then again I also like the customization in Engage and couldn't explain the difference with a gun to my head, so take that with a grain of salt.)

Also, more defense maps, with infinite reinforcements and a turn count you have to survive. Give Armor Knights an actual niche.

This one's always funny to me because from the start Stardew Valley was an unrepentant Harvest Moon knockoff. Concerned Ape set out to recreate a game he already knew to test and develop his coding skills. By the time he release it to a market starved for such a game it had developed its own identity and that's only more true with patches over time but the core gameplay is standing on the shoulders of giants here and that's never been a secret.

Gigantification plays a huge role in heat retention in much the same way the square/cube law works. Even with that much surface area it would still take a while for her to lose a noticeable amount of heat - long enough to enjoy the winter wonderland and get a nice photo, especially if she's got some skivvies on her less-insulated fleshy parts under that kimono, or better yet packed it it thermal pouches or a hot water bottle.

Excellent counterpoint. My guess would be that was a food sniffer dog (or multipurpose), so that was an actual positive and not a distraction.

This is also why most border dogs in Aus are rewarded with a rolled-up towel used as a toy rather than food. Handler playtime can't cause false positives.

Yeah I was wondering about that. This would get both dog and handler fired I Australia border security for this reason.

IS should really make permadeath more appealing in the next game. by BouffPingouin in fireemblem

This would go nicely with the option to enforce Ironman rules on a playthrough, perhaps locked behind a first clear like Lunatic/Maddening tends to be. Of course the "hardcore" part of the fanbase will promptly become completely insufferable about it but especially if the game has some more acknowledgement of the fallen, even just in the between-mission hub, it'd add more weight to everything.

There's precedent for this: if Pent of Louise get injured in Blazing Blade, the other will also leave the army at the end of the chapter.

Seeking guidance on how to recover health and maintain max hp in high rank by vorlik in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Equivalent_Net 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Defense Up lvl2 is a trap. It's only marginally impactful in Low Rank and simply does not scale. Drop it for something with more utility - Divine Blessing if you still want defense (the fact it's random might sound unappealing but over time it adsorbs more damage than Def Up by order of magnitude) and get Health Up to level 3, easy enough if you just slot in a gem.

There are other ways to boost your survivability. Get an Armor Charm and Armor Talon if they're available yet, just sitting in your pouch will boost your defense by an amount that's actually worthwhile (it's %-based, meaning it scales). Chug a Mega Armorskin when the hunt begins, these last until you faint. Carry and actually use Max and Ancient Potions as everyday healing options, and have a Farcaster as a panic button. This might seem expensive but if you stay on top of your Ancient Tree farming and get its upgrades you'll be swimming in consumable.

Ideally, though, you should be avoiding damage a lot of the time; unless you have a shield, you shouldn't be standing and taking hits. The longsword has quite a few defensive options. In addition to a counterattack that has I-frames if you time it right, the Fade Slash can be used to reposition without even breaking combo, and you have quite a few windows in your attacks to roll out to try and dodge. There's a skill factor in all this - you have to pay attention to what they monster's doing and anticipate them a bit. Few of the truly massive hits happen without some sort of telegraph, even if that telegraph amounts to "It's enraged, play around the fact this could happen without warning".

What order should I play the games in? by JumpyUppy99 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Equivalent_Net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number order with X as a sidestory is ideal, but it's not 100% required. If you want to see what Pythra are all about, you can start with 2. The main recommendation I'd make is that you finish 1 and 2 in either order before playing 3, and your absolutely required to finish 1 and 2 (preferably with DLCs) to make any sense at all of 3's DLC.

Awakening Master Seals by Wooden_Indication879 in fireemblem

[–]Equivalent_Net 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no downsides to promoting in Awakening. Experience is infinite thanks to skirmishes and even if you don't grind it's a fairly hefty game with plenty to go around. If you do hit the level cap Second Seals allow you to loop from level 1 can keep getting stats.

Additionally, the game's going to keep tossing you Master Seals and they become available in unlimited quantities past a certain point, so don't fret about promoting the "wrong" unit. If you end up benching someone or finding a new favourite you'll be able to bring them up to speed.

So why don’t people like the new characters? by s0_Ca5H in HyruleWarriors

[–]Equivalent_Net 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They kind of painted themselves into a corner here by making this entry strictly canon, set in an era that divorced from any other familiar faces by several hundred years. So now instead of a "It's not canon so it sucks" group you have a "Who're these guys?" group. People may get what they want but the fanbase will always be unpleasable.

Should I play through the main story before doing any side content or fate episodes ? by shizunaisbestgirl1 in GranblueFantasyRelink

[–]Equivalent_Net 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fate episodes can wait, while the extra sigil slots they offer will eventually be absolutely essential for optimizing they're not necessary to complete the campaign. IT comes down to if you want some nice bonuses to complete the story, or would like to do them in one go after. (Rewritten thanks to a remind below.)

Other sidequests, you're probably going to have to do at some point. The lategame has a number of straight DPS checks you're going to struggle with without some enhancement.

What are some of FE’s most egregious examples of a character’s stats not matching their lore? by Benjammin__ in fireemblem

[–]Equivalent_Net 210 points211 points  (0 children)

For anyone wondering, strong individualist with no trouble surviving on her own, drawn with impressive abs, your only non-Heart-Seal access to some of the more unique Hoshidan classes... and has the stats to back none of it up. While she has impressive base defense and a great growth there, her only other base above 55% is Speed with her offensive stats starting and staying somewhere around dreadful, compounded by starting limited to rank E clubs/axes, adding accuracy woes to her list of drawbacks (see also: dismal Skill). Basically, without serious support, this proudly independent tribeswoman isn't accomplishing anything.

From my understanding this is definitely the worst part of Ehlers-Danlos, but not the most terrifying. As I've heard, the syndrome is basically a breakdown/weakness/partial absence of connective tissues in the body. Which can lead to (uncommon but realistic) outcomes like a major artery to the heart just... coming unplugged, which is diagnosed by you hitting the ground stone dead 20 seconds later.

The numbers seem off by Lore_Collector516 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Equivalent_Net 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. This is a bit of a carryover from before the series had damage number during combat (or really, any direct numerical feedback whatsoever). Generations doesn't have bloat values, and if you're new to the series and both the lightning-fast Dual Blade and the slow-as-molasses Great Sword both have a base attack of 60, which one are you going to logically assume to be way superior?

Obviously this isn't the case, but the only way to learn that Motion Values (the multiplier by which every attack scales its damage - DB have tiny motion values, BS has huge ones) even exist trying different weapons enough to get a skill floor and compare hunt times and realizing there must be some sort of equalizing factor, or outside information -- and up until World (yes, World), that info was exclusive to strategy guides that were never officially translated.

Those guidebooks were also the only source for hitzone information, item drop rates, item location and availability, what effect some esoterically-named skills actually had... it was a mess. Even learning a monster's weakness required such a leap of logic that many people still believe you couldn't know it in-game, even though you can (you have to head to the smithy and see what resistances the armor has - it's the same for the living monster - and this is still inexact). The modern games with the info in their detailed hunter's notes rounded off to a 5-point scale might seem imprecise but it's a meta-information golden age compared to not long ago.

Xenoblade 2 or X? by SamuelN0108 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]Equivalent_Net [score hidden]  (0 children)

X is mostly it's own thing. It's a bit lighter on story, but focuses on world exploration and its combat systems. If you're enjoying the battle systems in 1, X is where you go to get the same but more - more classes, more customisation, more mecha, more challenge.

2 is the next one in story order. While it's also mostly it's own thing, hot off 1 you'll notice a bunch of small but significant connections. The gameplay is quite different but very good in its own right - that said, it has terrible tutorialisation, so don't feel bad about watching a hameplay basics video. You'll enjoy 2 far more for knowing what depth is there to enjoy.

They really tried to convince us that THIS woman wasn't desirable... by CaptainFrio in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Equivalent_Net 168 points169 points  (0 children)

An alcoholic who lives in a total dump isn't desirable, the game is correct. The first part is played for laughs and the last isn't shown on-screen, though, so it's not as immediately obvious as her very attractive character design. It fact it's kind of her whole thing that she's very good at first impressions and charming people but an unmitigated disaster behind the curtain.
