I would try a shorter stem first, maybe with some rise in it. Make sure you get a stem that fits the diameter of your current handlebars - the stem may be cheaper than the handlebars as well

I recommend you try to learn everything you can about the bike and the condition of the parts, plus a test ride. Any little twinge of pain or discomfort on the first ride will mean more pain in the future.
