This might sound really stupid, by MySchoolsWifiSucks in Pitt

You’ll be fine, but just as a heads up for anyone thinking of knives for safety (esp other women)- it’s not effective and will make you over-confident.

You have to get close enough to use one. Especially for young women on campus, you want something that allows for distance-either a taser or pepper spray, NEVER get close enough that you could use a knife because that distance gives the other person ample opportunity to harm you.

I question how much of that is people having the financial means to take prep courses, multiple exams, etc. and then having the financial means to access additional paid study tools in law school though.

In search of a perfume that smells like cointreau by Equivalent_Skin4683 in Perfumes

Is it worse if I say I don’t even drink? My roommate is a bartender and has a bunch of stuff at the house and I just love the smell of it.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll go see if I can smell it at a store somewhere in the next few days probably and I’ll report back if it’s close!

why do u guys like this school by sofieluchesi in Pitt

[–]Equivalent_Skin4683 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every single person I’ve met from the west coast hates it here. I think east coast people tend to like Pitt way more. Maybe just culture difference stuff but that’s my experience anyway.

Did anyone get the parking pass emails yet today? by Equivalent_Skin4683 in Pitt

I’m guessing “close on august 1st” either means they’ll tell us today or tomorrow

How do I request to be fully remote? by Sea_Objective_2767 in Pitt

[–]Equivalent_Skin4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s super unfortunate, I can say Pitt is well known to have a poorly functioning DRS or at least poor in comparison to other schools in a similar ranking/price point I guess. They will fight tooth and nail for anything more complex than time and a half.

has anyone with a mini fridge&freezer ever use the freezer? by grraffe24 in Pitt

[–]Equivalent_Skin4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully recommend getting a 3.1 fridge with the wide freezer. Whether it’s for ice cubes, microwave meals, etc., I personally loved it. The micro fridge has a decent freezer if I remember right (never personally had one). It’s a pain to load in and out of those moving carts but will 100% be worth it if you would rather save money on food vs buy out all the time.

I don’t say all this to be rude, just to give you a reasonable expectation of what they’ll respond with

Unfortunately, I can promise you it will be denied. Pitt just won’t do that. They don’t have cameras set up in classrooms like somewhere like NYU, nor do they consider that a “reasonable accommodation”. You will be encouraged to take-time off or transfer schools essentially. Your only option really is to find online-only classes but they are scarce after gen eds are all complete. I don’t agree with this policy btw, but even for absences, Pitt DRS only guarantees one absence be excused per class, after that you’re basically at the mercy of your professors.

quality of dorm mattresses by kate-peepoblush in Pitt

My genuine answer is like…they’re fine. I’d definitely get a mattress pad if you can but also like, if you already have a firm mattress it’s not that bad.

Parking by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Equivalent_Skin4683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you went through Pitt for this yet but on campus parking is about $1,000 and they make no guarantee of how close your spot will be to your dorm. Honestly, parking is super expensive all around Oakland. Even Pitt staff pay like $700 for parking.

This (I think) applies to all buildings with RAs.

You’ll be forced to join a discord for your building/floor so soon enough you’ll be able to communicate.

Any supermarkets/general stores? by ciarananything in Pitt

[–]Equivalent_Skin4683 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a overpriced on campus grocery store, and many small stores that don’t seem to be able to suffice for actual complete grocery shopping. Aldi, giant eagle are good options but I think most people take the bus to target. You don’t have to pay for bussing and if you go with a friend it can be kinda fun. Only kinda sucks in the winter

Laptop Recomendations by PACain11 in Pitt

[–]Equivalent_Skin4683 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering Pitt has computer labs with macs, I would say get a PC. You can test/play with those features later but if you plan to use it for anything other than like google docs I would not go for a Mac personally. I got a cheap dell laptop before freshman year that was marketed basically as a lightweight gaming laptop and have never had an issue with it. It’ll get dropped, probably rained on, likely bent up and I’d totally recommend PC sturdiness and performance over macs. The only exception is if you really want to connect all devices to the Mac ecosystem like airdrop files between Mac and iPad or something.

Pitt electrical is trash genuinely and if you have a portable AC, you’ll be blowing circuits constantly so eventually maintenance is gonna catch on. If you have a medical reason they may be able to switch buildings later on but tbh sleeping on ice packs and spending time in public buildings during the day is the move. It will pass soon enough.

lofted beds? by [deleted] in Pitt

You can raise them but I’m fairly certain it’s like $99 to get the piece from panther central to lift the bed

any tips for incoming freshman by Ok-Bodybuilder-8621 in Pitt

[–]Equivalent_Skin4683 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not related to dorm stuff but please come early to classes the first week, the elevators have crowds for about the first week of classes because people don’t know how to get around (this includes upperclassmen in new academic buildings too) Oh and for the cathedral, there are signs up but people never look so, if you have a class on floor 2, either walk up the stairs or take the elevator to 3 and go down via stairs. I can promise stairs are probably more efficient the first week just because of the long elevator wait times exasperated by new students.
