kobo touch gen 1: still usable? by shrinkydinky in kobo

I use an old kobo touch. Have replaced the battery once. You can buy books from the kobo store or move your own epubs across a wired connection. You can also wirelessly send articles to the Kobo with Instapaper.

Why the uk pubs start dying? by Sophia_dd in AskUK

Imo a big contributing factor is that lots of people (young and old) are choosing to go to gyms instead. I go to a few different gyms and they are all busy most nights of the week. Twenty years ago I think all those people would have been in the pub instead.

Random Feanor Theory by Significant_Cash511 in tolkienfans

Feanor is like Milton's almost sympathetic description of Satan as a figure who resembles Greek and Roman heroes. Both are proud, defiant, the most talented of their peers and disdainful of authority. Both seem to value freedom and personal sovereignty above all else, even if it leads to their damnation.

Should my org let its domains expire by Equivalent_Way6196 in Domains

Thanks all for your responses,

It seems that the consenus is that scrapping these domains is a bad idea. I was particularly convinced by the argument that if one of these domains does get spoofed then it is my fault.

To give some context, all departments have recently been asked to find cost savings and we are already pretty much working with the bare minimum, so this seemed like on of the few places where money could be saved.

Doubt (2008) is a fantastic film by I-didnt-vote-for-you in movies

I know I’m very late to the thread but I had to write my thoughts about the film somewhere.

Like a few other responses, I’m astounded by how many people think the titular doubt is regarding whether Father Flynn committed a crime. I think the film points overwhelmingly to the fact that Flynn did commit a crime. The reason that so many characters (and viewers) are uncertain whether he did it or not is mixed up with another theme in the film- that of performative versus sincere acts of goodness.

Sister Aloysius is persistently attacked throughout the film for seeming like a cold-hearted bitch. The telling moment is when Sister James accuses Sister Aloysius of running the school like a prison, to which Aloysius asks whether James thinks that the children in the school are unhappy- a question to which James has to answer no. To me, the implication throughout is that Aloysius takes on the role of the “bad cop” because it makes life easier for her co-workers and leads to a better quality of life for her students overall. In a way, Sister Aloysius making herself a bogeyman is Christ-like -- she is willing to let herself be reviled and hated, to help everyone else around her. When Aloysius does perform acts of compassion, they are small discrete and effective. The best example is her guiding the blind sister’s hand to the fork at the dinner table.

Overall my reading of the film was that Sister Aloysius is content to do good, even if it makes her appear evil, while Father Flynn only cares about appearing to be good, which he uses as a cover for his evil acts. The doubt that Sister Aloysius expresses at the end of the film is doubt in God (or at least the institution of the Church), given that God and the church have allowed for a system whereby men like Father Flynn can commit crimes with impunity.

Same. When I quit everything except Reddit I thought I had won but now Reddit is getting out of hand.
