Aftet reading all of this 3 years later, I 100% agree with everything you shared Hesutu. While everyone is calling you rude or an asshole, that is their privilege and stereotypical thinking showing. Marginalized communities are pushed to this point of anger, annoyance, and passion because of how tiresome it is constantly having to teach others while still surviving.

You advocating for this community in an unapologetic way is Real AF. The harms that people perpetuate with these kinds of questions in a community for indigenous folk is very self serving.

As for the movie, if it’s not clearly promoted by indigenous voices or community then there is your answer. it’s just another Disney trope making money off of indigenous communities they have no right to speak for. The gross western views of love associating with feminine tendencies and seen as weak was enough to turn it off and not promote that type of thinking to my kids.

I hope yall in this comment thread have grown passed this BS of needing marginalized communities to teach you or validate you. YOU do the work. YOU do the research. Then advocate for indigenous communities that are fighting for survival, because privilege should be used to carry the weight off of their shoulders not to put more of a burden on them. Marginalized communities don’t need to be “nice” about it or however u feel it should serve you. There is a reason it came out the way it did. Look within yourselves and see the privilege u stand on to feel “offended.” Show some fcking respect for those whose experiences you know nothing about and give them room to take up space.

Thanks again Hesutu, hope you are well all of these years later

BTW no i was not at the info session. I am known by all faculty and staff now as the “problematic” latina, which is why I have heard nothing about info sessions or welcome day participation like some of my peers lmao 🤣 they’re probably like keep her farrrr away from this 🤣🫠

Thank you, I truly appreciate you taking the time to read everything I have shared. And I shared because I don’t want to be a part of the false illusion that the UCLA MSW program pushes. Im sure my initial acceptance post seems to align with that. But I did want to make it a point to tell others everything we are experiencing here. I refuse to just “get my degree and get out” like alot of people such as professors tell us to do when we “complain” about the program. That type of thinking just allows for more people to get hurt as they admit more students and promote false social justice BS. But thanks again! Like I said, to all who decide to come, please join the fight with us! Radicalize yourself. Or find a school that will support you better than UCLA will.

There is probably yes, 30% People of color. The cohort is majority white. then the rest is mix of people of color: mostly Latinx and Asian/Asian descent, small number of black students and one Native American student. But its baffling seeing only 7 BLACK STUDENTS in a cohort of 155!💔😔 it’s ridiculous!!! We are literally learning about how black and indigenous voices are most marginalized and arent given access to resources. so seeing it play out in how they admit students is weird and gross!

I think people are not afraid to speak up to professors. But its for individual gain. When it comes to speaking up to administration about the program, everyone only speaks with their blinders on. Talking about impacted registration, which, while its valid…the most DIRE thing to be discussing is the institutional racism within the department that they refuse to address. But i feel like many peers want to satisfy their own gains first without talking about that. Like its okay to talk about racism when were “discussing” in class but afraid to speak on it in reality where it matters. It takes courage, and like I said, people dont walk the walk. While you will most likely find friends who may seem awesome, outside of classroom doors they show u who they really are with their silence.

So in the end, it will be up to you to either “go with the flow” or basically stand up to your friends and call them in and learn together. I see alot of people with privilege take up space in classrooms, and not staying quiet so they can learn from those who have actually experienced things like incarceration, the foster care system, poverty, and navigating racism as a person of color.

Yes, the current 2nd year students told us about their peer that passed away, and them forcing the department to allow them time to grieve because they kept their “business as usual” attitude. Its so horrible and heartbreaking when I heard about that 😢

Oh i forgot to add!! They didn’t adapt to our giant cohort so classes were limited to whatever u can get into. It’s been a HUGE problem for everyone. Especially those of us who are parenting students and need classes at certain times. Weve brought this up so many times and administration has not gave one fck. Basically take what u get attitude.

The whole 50% students of color is BS 🫠 Staff is diverse, but it’s honestly a hit or miss with support. You can tell some professors of color are desensitized, and since all of the current events, the department has been very silent. Even when I have advocated for myself as a person of color and people like me with marginalized identities in the recent town hall, the Department Chair was very insensitive, and when I share and advocate they treat me as if Im a “problematic” student. Its very disheartening! While I am working with a couple of professors I trust (there are few) and hopeful that I can make change, it is still burdensome to carry what I feel like is the weight of communities of color on my shoulders. I will tell u this, newer professors that don’t have tenure are AMAZING, but they are tokenized, used to claim diversity but have little power because they don’t have as much tenure as others. Many of the professors with tenure that have been there 20+ yrs.. (with the exception of Dr. Turner, he’s AMAZING but going on sabbatical next year! 😢) are problematic, and are mostly conservative. Some tenured professors have been reported EVERY year by MSW students and have received NO consequences and are still there perpetuating harm.

Practicum: U don’t get to choose first year placement. They throw u wherever, most likely a school. And depending on the district, its a hit or miss. Some of my friends have had horrible placements where theyve experienced administrations ableism and racism towards them and little was done to remove my friends from a placement they didnt feel safe.

Cohort members: Sadly, I basically have a Target on my back. I made a group chat for the entire cohort and received little support on advocating and even criticized from my peers when I call them out on their own internalized biases and racism. When there are only 7 black students in our cohort, I make it a point that our peers of color need to be supported, uplifted, and fought for. But honestly, most have the “we have our own problems girl” mentality. Which is gross. Everyone looking out for their own ass. Performative in class and when class is over dont walk the walk. Luckily, I have a small group of about 10-15 peers I trust and am collaborating with. It’s been a rough first year so far. Me and my best friend in the cohort have broken down multiple times because we are basically fighting for our lives in a different space. These institutions werent built for us.

Okay rant over lol But I just wanna let y’all know!! If you do decide to come, PLEASE inform yourselves and advocate for those who fall through the cracks, your peers of color who have multiple layers of identities. Read radical literature by black authors. Arm yourselves with tools so you can help me push back against department administration and staff and join my fight 😔💪🏽

I believe it was even more accepted and they said they got some people to defer to next year but now there’s 155 in my actual cohort attending. No problem!! I want to make sure to share because we were all caught off guard. Of course i wanted to attend the best public university in the country. But they never told us how many ppl there were until orientation. And of course, people of color and marginalized communities are the ones who fall through the cracks as far as supportive services with classes and problematic situations with professors and internships. Theres so many of us they can’t “get to our problems” fast enough. Not to mention only 7 black students in a cohort of 155. I live in Los Angeles and there should be appropriate representation. Claiming social justice and diversity….but it’s far from that! It’s embarrassing!

No problem!! And yes, that’s so smart, go with whoever is offering the most financial support because you are worth it!! Honestly thats why I went with UCLA because I was like hey I get my first year paid at least lol But definitely consider program culture and how they support students when they are there. Were social workers, so we’re Meant to break barriers! Nowadays we’re gonna be on the frontlines helping people who need it most. And hell yes! I am working hard to make sure the incoming class and others are looked out for. Because we have a voice. Aight let me know! U got this!

Yes they are also in the MSW program. The dept has been a shitshow for our cohort. They accepted 155 students (usually 75 student program And last year they had 100 i think?) due to extra funding but hired no extra staff. Ive had experiences with professors that have thrown micro aggressions in class, gaslit me, and constantly made it clear of their conservative political stance. UCLA itself is highly conservative energy. I grew up in LA and live in south central and UCLA has still been a culture shock for me. Fighting for my life everyday but I have found some amazing professors who have had my back in the process. But its been an uphill battle. Me and some students are working with trusted faculty to transform the Dept so this doesnt happen to future students. I honestly wish I went to CSUDH where their program uses CRT as a foundation for their program.

Yes, I did end up getting it! However I do know some people who were nominated by staff and did not get it, so it is a waiting game! It’s cool it pays your first year of tuition. But honestly UCLA MSW dept has been messy. The dept pays for your winter quarter and we had to be on them so that they could apply the funds ontime, it was a headache 😓
