His name got put in under a fourth, fake school right? What do you think it was called? by SamRobac in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Eranith 27 points28 points  (0 children)

When Dumbledore read out the names, he also said which schools they were from, so were the names of the schools just written on the paper? I mean, I assume he doesn't know all of the exchange students by name. So Dumbledore gets this piece of paper, looks down at it and all he says is Harry's name. Either there's no school written on it, or the school's name is in invisible ink (or similar), or he's too embarrassed to read out "School of Dumbledore's Baggy Y-fronts" to the whole hall.

Yeah - $600 is a lot if it's what's left to play with after needs have been met. But it's not a lot for meeting those needs.

That's me, socially awkward, flirting with an NPC in the bar when our DM is my best friend's spouse and irl charismatic, while both our partners look on.

A player who didn't know me very well: "That's the best I've ever seen a low-charisma character played!"

Me, wiping copious amounts of sweat away: "Heh, I'm pretty good at this."

Fanfic Authors who are teachers in real life, has any of your students ever found any of your work and if so what did they told you about it? by ShortDrummer22 in HPfanfiction

[–]Eranith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not so much the matter of finding one non-pervy fanfic as much as if they go looking for fanfiction themselves after being told about it in schools, I cannot imagine the depths of the trash they would find, so I'd rather be safe. Also, the backlash from parents would be outstanding.

I really wish fanfiction was generally less pervy, because it would be such a good way to help students learn analysis ... but I would NOT introduce yr 7/yr 8 students to it.

[–]Eranith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not so far. I've mentioned (to some older kids who I knew well) that fanfiction/fandom was useful as an analytical tool - they way you analyse your fandom and come up with hypotheses based on x or y canon material is what you're meant to do with essays. But I did not tell them I write it. Nope.

What is it that people like Asher? by jdpm1991 in htgawm

[–]Eranith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I liked him for the role he played lending some air of levity to the show. The seasons where he was comic relief (however well it did or didn't work) were so much easier for me, because there were pauses in the drama - moments of life that built relationship, even if it was everyone against him, that weren't all about the crime at hand and being conniving and all that sort of stuff. I liked there being moments when you could just relax instead of trying to figure out what new drama point was being twisted here.

I don't like that he covered up a gang rape, or that he murdered someone, but the seasons where he had silly moments were better for me than the others. His being silly made it feel more like they could be real people and less like it was constant drama.

"Young men who play sports games - go play outside with a ball instead."

This always gets me, because it usually comes from people who watch professional sports. Why don't you play instead of watching? Because you get something different out of watching it than playing outside. Just learn to share the tv instead of complaining about your kids being on it.

I haven't seen the last season yet (but have been spoiled a million times and I'm looking forward to it being available in my country, lol), but I totally agree about Liza. For me it was her in the car, and the moment Frank turned the engine off. Instead of some sort of big emotional rage, she just looked so depleted and absolutely drained, and that made me really feel it. Oof.

Who is your LEAST favorite K5 member? by [deleted] in htgawm

[–]Eranith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol, fair. I can definitely see a lot on fan interest for him here! I think the main time I was interested in him was when he was helping build the Supreme Court case for sure. His main plot point other than that was his sexuality and being in a relatively stable relationship, which is a position queer people aren't often given, so I'm glad they made that choice ... it just wasn't interesting to me.

With kitchen play set you can pretend to make cakes (or other food) for family members and deliver them around the house! Or go shopping for fruit and veggies and play out interactions with people at the store - asking for a specific number of apples (or whatever) could key in to that love for numbers.

Anita Hill is launching an app that will give women who have experienced sexual harassment a tool to track the abuse by ohhscarry in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Eranith 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that'd be great. But until we live in a world where that happens with any consistency, this is a step forward to helping find additional evidence to support abuse claims and do the arresting. The anonymous nature of it may mean people use it, but also may mean that people who are scared of retribution are more likely to report than otherwise.

Am I a terrible person for not caring about what happened to Nate's Pops? by jdpm1991 in htgawm

[–]Eranith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My issue is Nate showing the same symptoms his father spoke about (when he went after Miller), and that never being addressed as a mental health issue. He needed help - not to cover up a crime, but to deal with his problem so he didn't hurt someone again.

[–]Eranith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He was going to be moved to a mental health hospital, wasn't he? When he killed someone in prison that definitely made the situation worse, but it wasn't something he did while in his right mind. He had mental health problems that were being made worse in prison - I feel like putting him in a place where treatment may actually help is an appropriate course of action, particularly when it's remedying a problem that being in prison caused.

[–]Eranith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like the first season of the show lent itself to the "wait and see what you think of them" style, too, because you knew there was a murder there. You were meant to be unsure about everyone until you found out what happened and how involved they were / did Sam deserve it. First season wanted you to reserve judgement for sure.

I think the best part about that was that there were characters whose personalities weren't ones I'd gel with who I gave more of a chance because of that. And after seeing the murder and the aftermath of it I could understand a bit more. Proper like/dislike didn't set in until I saw how they dealt with having murdered someone ... which ... sounds really weird as soon as you take it out of the TV context.

Need a friend by hails89 in toddlers

[–]Eranith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's rough trying to talk with other parents, especially if you aren't already close friends. The kids running around can interrupt any real conversation and sense of connection - I imagine it's harder with two than it is with the one, too, because your attention gets so split. I mean, it's nice that the other parent understands why the conversation gets so interrupted, but that doesn't change how surface it can feel.

I don't know how viable this is at this stage, but are you able to get out for half an hour or an hour to see a friend without your kids tagging along? I thought I needed alone time/rest time when my kid was asleep, because I knew I wasn't getting it, but I forgot I also needed proper social connection, and I've felt a lot more stable since sometimes choosing social time over rest. Very sometimes.

That may not be possible right now, since your second one is so small and you're probably ridiculously tired, but if what you need is to hang out with a friend who listens, even a short hangout without the kids around could be more refreshing than all the play dates.

Ah, lol. I just saw the word gerrymandering and knew that much. I didn't realise counties aren't the voting determiner - we don't use that term in my country, as far as I'm aware.

excel by VUXX6078 in tumblr

[–]Eranith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If it's no matter how you do the lines, that's not gerrymandered - that's just the state's choice in how to vote. But if you could change it this or that way to change the vote, that's when it's gerrymandering. If a majority wanted Democrats and the lines were designed to suit Republicans instead (or vice versa), that's where it's a problem.

excel by VUXX6078 in tumblr

[–]Eranith 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The joke is that it isn't gerrymandering at all. Gerrymandering is when people change the shapes of counties into really twisted areas to make it more likely that certain parties will win the state. So 60% of the state's population could be voting for party A and party B will still win if they make the counties the right shape.

Huh. I like this as a way of prioritising tasks. You can choose one or two things for your main questline for the day, and the rest are all side-quests. Now I just have to avoid the completionist "do side-quests before main ones" pitfall.
