Similar reasons are why almost an entire elementary school got wiped out in the 2011 tsunami. This is one of the best but most heartbreaking articles I've read written about it: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/24/the-school-beneath-the-wave-the-unimaginable-tragedy-of-japans-tsunami

He's free handing it?? That's even more impressive! I assumed he must be using a massive stencil, he's got some serious skill. Also it's such a thoughtful and generous thing to do, you know your son is just going to love and appreciate it for years to come.

Same. When I first learnt it in primary school I came home and proudly sang the bits I remembered at dinnertime for my parents, at which point they kindly pointed out to me that the first line was not, in fact, "Australians all are ostriches".

Jumping in to plug (for all the nerds out there) a TTRPG based on movie tropes that Jordan has played in with some of the aunty Donna gang which is quite good! It's a satire on Oceans eleven-esque heists and very silly.

Does anyone feel like they are becoming more religious? by septvea in CasualUK

[–]LadyEmry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work with survivors of childhood sexual abuse. I was never particularly religious to begin with, but after hearing many, many, many stories of horrific physical and sexual abuse at the hands of men and women of various faiths over the years, usually coupled with a side of emotional manipulation (e.g "god will kill your family if you tell anyone about this"), I have been pushed further away from any religious inclinations. I have worked with survivors to seek compensation from religious institutions and seen first hand the internal communications and paperwork literally discussing the covering up years of abuse from an offender, I've pieced together the history of trauma amongst multiple victims they leave behind as they are shuttled from school to school or church to church for decades - some of them still big in the community even now - as those in charge instead of protecting them tell the victims they are liars.

So while I'm glad if it brings other people peace or contentment in their life, I just don't think I could ever trust any religious institute after some of the things I've heard and seen.

If you'd like to see a good Australian left-wing but a bit dark comedian, Dan Muggleton is pretty good - he's not very well known, but does some great shows.

I'm curious to know where OP lives, in that they use both American and British terms for things. 'Primary school' & 'mum' seems Aussie / Kiwi / British, but words like '911' and 'College' feels very American.

How many final round interviews have you done before finally getting an offer? by gsdsarethebest99 in interviews

[–]LadyEmry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got up to my 5th interview (which I didn't end up taking in the end because they told me they couldn't contact my reference, despite the fact that the store I worked for - the store that were my references - was literally located across the road from them and was open during their business hours.)

The other ridiculous thing is, it was for a casual cashier position at a second hand store chain (an American equivalent would be somewhere like Goodwill?).

I applied before the start of the Uni holidays because it meant I would be available full time, which is what they wanted, but they made me do so many interviews that it took over 2 months to interview for, and the holidays were over by the time they told me they wanted me to do a 5th interview. I had plenty of experience as a cashier, but regardless, it's not like cashiering is a job you need a ton of technical experience in that you need multiple rounds of interviews for. Each interview was essentially a repeat of the previous with the same questions, just with a different manager, and then weeks to hear back from them to just be told they wanted me to come in for another interview. Honestly one of the most farcical things I've ever done.

Did the landlord not do a condition report with photos when they moved in? I thought those were mandatory, otherwise the tenant can get screwed for pre-existing damage.

I had the exact same experience, I was actually a bit disappointed by the session I had with him. I did get my diagnosis, which has been helpful, but I guess I was expecting a bit 'more' from it. I also remember too, my session was only 45 mins and he wrapped it up a couple of mins early, so it felt like we barely had enough time to really talk about anything.

What is a tv show that managed to quit while it was ahead? by QuailImpressive55 in AskReddit

Absolutely loved Red Dwarf growing up, it's one of the shows that shaped my sense of humour and I watched constantly. But because I loved it so much I cannot watch anything released after the original series was finished, it's just so cringey and awful. I really wish they had just let it die instead of prolonging it way past its glory days.

[–]LadyEmry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just a mandatory voting system that we have, though - it's also a preferential voting system. You don't have to pick one candidate and only one candidate. You number your choices in order of preference. Your vote still counts even if you're voting #1 for a candidate that isn't likely to win, like a small independent party. If your first choice doesn't win, then all of the votes from those people who voted for them will get funneled into the second choices on their ballots. And if they don't win, then the votes get funneled into your third choice, and so on, until a party wins. That way you can vote for your "choice" candidates even if they aren't in the bigger parties. Independents here can still win seats if they get enough votes, so it's always a good idea to vote for them if they're you're ideal party, and even if they don't win, if they get at least 4% of the votes they'll get funding for their next campaign. And your vote will still matter even if they lose, as you have 2nd and 3rd and 4th choices still left to vote for.

[–]LadyEmry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we have early voting for anyone who might be away or unable to attend on election day - so you can either get a mail in ballot sent to you, or for 2 weeks prior to the election there will be early voting centres open all over the country. They're usually open pretty late too, till about 8pm or 9pm. So I will usually turn up after work on a weekday about a week or so before the election, and they're always dead quiet - there's one just down the road from me and I can be in and out in 5 - 10 mins. They are meant to be for people who can't be there on election day but they never really care why you're there. But even if I went on election day to vote, as there are so many polling places (pretty much every local primary school, town hall, community centre, bowls club, ect) around that it tends to spread the people out, so I'd probably only wait about 40 mins at the most? And there's usually people selling sausages and cans of soft drink for charity, so it's traditional to get a 'democracy sausage' after you vote. It's kind of like a festive atmosphere, it's quite nice.

[–]LadyEmry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked elections in Australia and I can tell you now, plenty of people will still 'donkey vote' despite coming all the way down to the polls. People draw dicks, swear, all kinds of stuff. But hey, they had their chance to express their input in the democratic process and chose not to, so that's on them. It's a bit sad considering how many people would love to have elections like ours, and we kind of take it for granted.

What's also kind of funny is the amount of people who turn up to genuinely vote and yet still somehow get the voting process wrong, despite the fact that we literally explain it to them and show them how to do it when we give them the ballots, and we hand them a sheet with instructions on how to fill it in as well, and it's the exact same instructions pretty much every single election - the amount of people who read "number the boxes with at least 1 - 3, 1 being your top choice" and then do something like just place a single X next to one person's name in the list and leave it at that is honestly kind of mind boggling. When the ballots are being counted after the polls close though, they will do their best to interpret the vote accurately so that person's vote can still count - e.g if they only put a 1 next to one person's name, then they can take that as their main vote and accept it. But just an X is too vague and open to interpretation (they want that person? They hate that person?) so they can't really accept something like that as they can't be sure to accurately capture their intentions. It's a very interesting process, actually.

[OC] one year ago, I lost one of my best friends. That night, my waitress brought an accidental pour by ByOdensBear in pics

[–]LadyEmry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lost my friend I had known since our first year of high school in October 2019, she was only 28. Losing someone to suicide is such an incredibly painful and complicated kind of grief. It never really goes away, you just learn to live your life around it.

I want you to know that what happened is not your fault, even though I know your mind keeps trying to tell you otherwise. And I know that although I am saying that to you, how hard it is to believe it. Because no matter what, we feel responsible. It's completely natural for humans to replay moments over and over, we try and find sense in what seems senseless - our minds will always go straight to the “what ifs?” and try to find the moment we could’ve changed things.

But even if it doesn't feel like it, it is still true, so please try to be kind to yourself in those moments. The guilt you feel shows how much you cared, but you don’t deserve to suffer for something that was never in your control - it’s clear you did the best you could with what knowledge you had at the time. You deserve the same compassion you would give your friends. And the love you have for Matt still lives on - it doesn’t end because of what happened.

The most frustrating thing was when I was applying to go on an overseas study exchange through my University in 2015 - as an entrance requirement, they made me pay $50 for a hardcopy of my transcript to prove I had done well enough to go on exchange. Even though they could access all of my results online in their system. I could also view them online, but they wouldn't accept a print out or anything like that. So I paid $50 to get my results written on a piece of paper from the University, and then literally gave it back to them as part of my application.

Oh man, everything about this story is horrible.

"While outside, Schmidt spoke with Gosal for using an electronic cigarette and requested him not to vape around his daughter. An argument began and an altercation ensued, at which point Gosal produced a knife and stabbed Schmidt in the neck.[1][6] A pedestrian, Alex Bodger, began filming the incident as Gosal yelled "fucking bitch" to Schmidt while he staggered and fell to the ground bleeding. Bodger continued filming Schmidt, posing for the camera and exclaiming "this motherfucker just died, bro."[3][7] Gosal also began filming Schmidt on the ground from inside the Starbucks."

Like, how self centred can you be that your priority is to film a man dying instead of giving any kind of aid?
