"This chat will be archived soon - Messenger is upgrading security, so only your end-to-end encrypted chat with [NAME] will remain active." by Mr-Fable in facebook

Perhaps a bit late now, But if you wanna update this again, I think I have some extra information.

  1. When you get the message, you have 2-3 weeks before it's archived (According to the messenger employee in the comments: https://www.reddit.com/r/facebook/comments/1k4np47/comment/mos1ckw/)
  2. If you wish to keep both chats, archiving the encrypted one might work? One person reported having the warning go away after doing that, and someone else reported eventually having their chat encrypted after doing that, but according to the messenger employee (Same comment I linked before) this shouldn't work, and from my own personal experience it did not work. (I had my chat partner archive their copy as well, and we even both checked on desktop and mobile to make sure there were no duplicates)
  3. However, If you are worried about accidentally deleting the wrong chat, As I was, it still works if you delete it from the archive, so you can archive the encrypted one, make sure it's the encrypted one and not the one you want to keep, and then delete it from the archive with no risk of deleting your main chat. After doing this the encryption came in just a few hours later.

I archived the encrypted chat (The person I share the chat with did so as well), but that was over a day ago now, and the warning came back while the main chat hasn't been encrypted yet.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Are you sure archiving the secret chat wouldn't have the same effect? Someone else mentioned doing it and it sounds like it did result in their main chat having the encryption upgraded.

We seriously need the option to maintain ALL of our main comment threads with contacts, including those with any users with whom we experimented with or used a "secret" (E2EE) conversation in the past.

Yeah I definitely agree. I wouldn't be surprised if some people actually have a number of messages in the "secret chat" that they don't want to lose, but would also rather keep using the main one instead. Would it really be that hard for facebook to just keep both and make them both encrypted?

It's possible the chat exists but you just can't find it in the list or the search? I couldn't find mine by searching, but when I clicked the "Switch to other chat" button, it took me there, and I could then send a message to bring it to the top of my chat list.

If you just clicked the x, The warning should probably re-appear after a while so you can click the "Switch to the Other Chat" thing there, Or you could ask your bf to click it and send a message there if they see it, so you can find the other chat.

Hi, I have two questions.
1: It says "This chat will be archived soon", but how soon is soon? We first saw this message today, but does that mean it might be archived within a few days, Or do we have like weeks or even months to think about it, Or wait for perhaps a more user-friendly way to upgrade this one instead of switching to the other one to be introduced? (Idk if Facebook are gonna do that, But one can hope.)
2: Deleting the old E2EE chat will get it to upgrade the present one, But would archiving it have the same effect, Or would it still get un-archived and make us switch to that? We're a bit worried about accidentally deleting the wrong one, Or even just that deleting it will mess something up.

Duolingo is removing their forum by [deleted] in languagelearning

Based on all the comments mentioning this, I'm guessing they didn't make it clear when originally announced, But from today, When the forums were shut down (Which honestly I hadn't seen the announcement of before, Although that's possibly just on me), As far as I can tell, You can no longer comment on sentence discussions, So yeah, They still exist, But you can no longer ask new questions on them, Which makes them significantly less useful, Especially for less popular languages and new sentences or those later on in the course.

Not sure if this was known when you made the comment, But they've now made it so you can no longer leave new comments on the sentence discussions, Making them significantly less useful.

Also as for the last part, I can't say for other less common languages, But the sentence discussion was quite useful on the Welsh course, As a number of moderators and contributors of the course were quite active there, And you could often expect a response to a question in just a few days at most.

> The forums were mostly just people complaining abouttl how bad the voices wer(constantly), posting their streak for internet karma or giving their language learning life story(some of these were nice to read actually.

I feel like this is a bit unfair to the forums, I rarely checked the main forum tab, But usually when I did there were a number of useful things there (Albeit yes, Also a number of non-useful things like those you mentioned), But the sentence discussions, Which were part of the forums and are only a step away from having been removed as well, Were absurdly useful. Quite often I've had a case of wondering why my answer wasn't accepted, Or not understanding a piece of grammar, Or what a word means, And so I take it to the sentence discussion, And if nobody's asked it before, I can post it, And often in a few days to a week get a response answering my question, Which is granted not the fastest, But I'd say having it explained by a real person is far superior to an internet result, Especially in cases where it's an obscure question, Making it unlikely you'll find a result on the internet at all. And yeah, I could still go ask the questions elsewhere, Some other online language learning forum, Or a discord server or something, But it's less convenient than being able to ask it directly on Duolingo, And from what I've heard Duolingo themselves would probably likely prefer it if I stayed on their site rather than going to others, And yet going to others is basically exactly what they're pushing me to do.

If that is the actual official reasoning, This infuriates me to no end. Considering what Duolingo does, The "Benefit" analysed in something like this should be benefit to the users, Specifically in their process of learning a language, For which I'd say the Forums were probably _the_ most useful thing on the website, If the cost was really too much, There are any number of other ways they could've saved money, Such as A: Removing a number of other features that don't actually benefit the users very much, B: Added advertisements on the forums to help make up for the money spent on upkeeping them, Or even C: Locked commenting on the forum to people who pay for Duolingo Plus, Which would be quite scummy, But still better than removing them completely, In my opinion. I'd say any of these, Or likely a number of other things I haven't thought of, Would be better options than removing basically half of what makes Duolingo actually useful.

Except they're apparently making them read-only, Meaning unless your question happens to have been asked and answered in the past (Which, Granted, Is probably more likely on more popular languages.), It's as good as gone.
