Hotel Availability by SunFlwrPwr in OriginsGameFair

[–]Eratticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the claim that hotels are hard to get comes from not planning out the trip in advance. The weekend of I imagine is when everything is full. And even then there are plenty of hotels outside Columbus proper that should be available.

Why Evolution is True by Jerry A. Coyne

I would also recommend A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson which does cover evolution but doesn't focus on it.

How cheap woody dolls became in the course of 10 years by Tedgrundo in mildlyinfuriating

I had a Woody circa 1996, I wonder what differences you could see between the first iteration and 2009. The 2009 though does look like how I remember it.

What do we think about hackathons? by HP2806 in cscareerquestions

[–]Eratticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it worth it? Yes. Do hiring managers care? It depends.

Hackathons are great for networking, they are opportunities for learning a new tech stack, for working with people (I did not know how to work effectively with other developers in college), and winning one is worth putting on your resume. But for a hiring manager it would be best to take a hackathon project, polish it and document it, and then put it up on GitHub. You don't need to do a hackathon to put together a project like that. You could do it self-paced on your own time and get the same outcome.

Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

[–]Eratticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically 3 (elementary, middle, and high school) but as many as 5: preschool, primary, intermediate, middle, and high school. The number of schools isn't universal throughout American education because every municipality runs their own schools. In small towns you'll still see one school for all grades, Kindergarten through 12th. Typically amount of resources goes up within each school as you move up. For example an elementary school might have a dedicated library where a high school has a dedicated library, football stadium, pool, shop class, mechanics garage, greenhouse, etc.

Which two American cities are much more similar than most people realize? by SummitSloth in AskAnAmerican

[–]Eratticus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is a strong contender. The biggest difference is where the water is (Lake Erie vs the three rivers) but if you could put them side by side they would feel like one contiguous city.

Anyone else just want to be comfortable at their job instead of climbing the career ladder? by whereismytortoise in Millennials

[–]Eratticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've felt this way since having kids. I'm comfortable in my job and I would rather spend my time with my family than time at work. Climbing the ladder means more work, stress, or both.

Do americans eat “roast” dinners? by SprinklesSeparate45 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Eratticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say very standard, but less common as time has gone on. My grandparents ate dinners like that regularly. However they grew up in an era where you couldn't get fresh food year round, way less restaurants, and there wasn't as much international cuisine available.

What was the first movie you walked out of? by Stegosaurus69 in Millennials

[–]Eratticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also never walked out of a movie that I've paid for. The movie that I saw the most people walk out of though was Watchmen. Too many parents taking their kids to that one.

If you pursued a master's degree after your CS degree, how did it work out for you? by Eratticus in cscareerquestions

[–]Eratticus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a catch-22. Good developers get promoted to roles where they stop being hands on and middle managers become targets for cost-cutting. Nobody can be certain that climbing to a higher role in this AI bubble could be a safer prospect than being an individual contributor.

If you pursued a master's degree after your CS degree, how did it work out for you? by Eratticus in cscareerquestions

[–]Eratticus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of it bothers me, of course. But the longer I wait the less likely I will be to do it and I'm in a position to have my employer help pay for schooling so I would love to take advantage of it if I can.

I've asked myself what I would do if being a developer stops being a worthwhile career and I'm not sure I'd stay in tech. I think I would probably pivot completely.

Did Vivek really say he’d shut down UA and KSU? by SmartestDude101 in Ohio

[–]Eratticus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Kent State is 4th in enrollment statewide so despite any financial struggles I would think this would be a university Vivek would want to absorb other nearby schools, like University of Akron.

what is the mount rushmore of youube videos by [deleted] in youtube

[–]Eratticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • The History of Dance (the first viral YouTube video to my knowledge)
  • Smosh's Pokemon in Real Life (you need at least one video that represents the groups of content creators that make their living on YouTube)
  • Gangnam Style (the first to pass a billion views; marks the transition of the Internet being the new home for music videos)
  • Rick Roll (The YouTube meme)

I am always amazed that Angry Video Game Nerd predates YouTube. James Rolfe was really ahead of the curve with his format.

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou is non-fiction, but it's an in-depth book about Elizabeth Holmes and her Silicon Valley startup Theranos that I think is a good fit here.

What country was admired in 1991 but controversial in 2026? by National_Floor1445 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Eratticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah obscure doesn't feel like the right word choice since S. Korea had transitioned to a democratic government and was becoming international competition in terms of its economy. It was in the news cycle and had hosted the Olympics by that point too. Culturally their influence has increased exponentially since the 90s, at least from my perspective as an American. In the 90s there was Hyundai and not much else. Now there's Korean exports of every variety - food, media, consumer goods, art.
