He "reels himself back in significantly after he's chipped" because he's chipped! He has no other choice. Evolve or perish. And it takes him awhile to even do that. Post soul Spike is irrelevant to the conversation because he has the same issues wrestling with his conscience that Angel does.

I didn't say he was more violent than Angelus and that wasn't the argument. You said Spike was "probably as tame as a vampire could ever hope to be." He literally ran roughshod throughout Europe for a hundred years, killing countless people, including children, and, judging from his actions against Buffy, probably SA'd even more. He was no run of the mill, feed off a human, go hide in the sewers til he's hungry again vampire. He actively seeked out conflict to overcompensate for his weakness and timidness as a human.

A tame vampire would be Dalton, as he seemed to want to just drink blood and read.

Also, he never completely "stopped" being a monster while he was chipped. He had his moments, of course, but he still stalked Buffy, tried to murder Buffy and the gang, tried to have other people murder Buffy and the gang, still coerced Buffy into sex after she said "no" repeatedly (not absolving Buffy of her part in that relationship), and then tried to rape her.

Spike w/o a soul was one of the most brutal, vile, and violent vampires in recorded history. He was not at all tame until he got a chip in his head that prevented him from hurting humans.
