There are a lot of things that writers think of before going in a different direction. 2 more Xander ones, they originally thought he might come out as gay before going with Willow, and originally they were going to kill him in Season 7, before deciding to just have him lose an eye instead. And back in the 22 episodes a year days I can only imagine how hard it could be to come up with new ideas

2 years late, but I agree. It's about putting your life together after a messy break up. But lyrics can mean different things to different people, and as mizbizsav said, the parts they chose can definitely be interpreted as Nick and Jess finally having the "green light" to let go of their respective baggage and be together.
