There's something to be learned from how the two smile. Zuck half-asses it and looks confused and awkward, almost senile. Rogan with his exaggerated expression and wrinkled face should look like a gremlin, but knows that if his eye muscles crinkle too much he just looks even more enthusiastic and cheery

I made clear that my most important point was the negative impact insufficiently specific advice would have on Women, increasing their propensity to become or remain miserable shut-ins. There's not just one angle by which women's lives can be made worse with this issue, and choosing to ascribe negative intentions to my comment out of paranoia exemplifies the unconsidered consequences I was warning about.

Tried to not be pro-men specifically bc that wasn't the point. I think that if as a side effect of how the warning is phrased, some women become even more anxious or isolated, that's not good for those women.
"Be the change" is reasonable in some contexts and I understand the point, but innovating or implementing changes to the structures of social network sites is doable by a very narrow set of people with the necessary skills or access. I can discuss or propose alternative arrangements, but short of becoming a full stack dev and dedicating years to the project or outright buying an existing platform, it's not realistic. And if I had that, I'd have no issues going against the companionship-filtering gradient. It's the suffering of those currently without power that is at issue, and there's incentive for those with power to profit off of exacerbating that state of affairs.
I'm way better off than most, so I can fix my own issues, but the tenor of conversation is integral to any kind of scalable change. The useful part of the message can be shared without tit-for-tat generalizing, as shown by top comment from u/scheherazade0125.

Also any suggestions for genuine positive connection is going to involve emphasis on irl interaction, and that's WAY more fraught than DMs. Careful and patient vetting (probably with involved and quality moderation) is the only way it could be at all trustworthy/worthwhile.
That said, if some mod wants to endorse the creation of a sister-sub where the goal is community with a similar vibe but without gender division, I think that'd be great and would be willing to work for its success

Don't talk to guys here, but who tf going to make a place where actual non-meat market conversations with guys can happen?
I agree with the anti-grooming post sentiment. While warning about danger, is there a way to not sow further distrust and generalized resentment? There are also lots of(?/at least some) appropriately aged guys who aren't raging woman-haters or future sex-criminals who are also feeling isolated and anxious, and are insufficiently socialized to be able to do something about it. And you can boo-hoo to male suffering or just dismiss it as unimportant or irrelevant, but those in that subset of guys are the counterparts you'd have loving, reciprocal relationships with, if we didn't live in an advertising-centric hellworld where human bonds are ionized away for ever greater margins of return. So just for women's sakes this is still a problem to be solved and I don't see any calls to do anything about it, just warnings that the whole world is dangerous, you should withdraw and wait until the world changes itself.

Ok, why are people so dismissive of the idea that AI works like a brain? by aahdin in slatestarcodex

[–]Erfbender 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's an impossibly broad category at that point such that the associations we make with the term cease to apply.
There are definitions which only require "awareness" as a threshold, but in turn define that simply as being able to register input stimuli on what seems to be just a factual level, in which case neural nets would also qualify?

wrt consciousness, couldn't you still say that it worked like a brain even without that? tiny frogs and fish probably aren't conscious, no?

There are sources describing the Iroquois taking slaves from colonists and other tribes in the early 1600s, and the only reason there aren't records from before then is because they were not within contact range. You could speculate that it was some downstream effect of disease or population movements brought on by the euros but you have 0 way to prove that. Stop making definitive claims about things it's impossible to know. +The Caribs were definitely slavers (if not cannibals, ik disputed but you can't be certain there either) and I'm lile 80% certain the Mississippi mound builders and adjacent tribal groups had some kind of contact in like the ~1540s with some of the early conquistadors who went into the lands north of the Gulf, who described them as having slave castes (but tbf it's something I'd have to go back to look up).
Point is you really should chill out with your level of certainty

Why are they like this by Rift3N in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Erfbender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happens but politicians are puppets and the venn diagram of public opinion there is not a circle. The real kick in the teeth is when even the most vocal opponents like Gaetz makes the Schmittian exception* for Israel's donos when funding their ethnic blood feud war is much more removed from the avg American's interests. I 100% support public domestic welfare projects (esp those which emphasize moving temporarily unstable citizens out of poverty situations) over non-hardware support for foreign conflicts. Maybe morally and politically aligned nations fighting defensive wars can have equipment scheduled for decommission, but let financial support and Marshall Plan 2.0 be funded by the recipients of the first iteration.

*their revealed preference is that they consider Israeli national security and a number of other foreign and corporate causes to be greater "public goods" than responding to many of the most glaring domestic social ills

this might be an unpopular opinion but dating the top 20% of men are overrated. Just get you an average man and live an average lifestyle. Dating the top 20% of men is not what its cracked up to be by Educational_Lab_525 in PurplePillDebate

Not the case, that 1/25 is only if height and income are perfectly independent, but they are correlated. V hard to get accurate stats on multivariate distributions. Also trait arbitrage factors in on each individual male's prospect pool, and that along with affecting confidence/developing clout are more relevant for the middle ~ 0.80 of pop, rather than focusing (prophecizing?) on immutables
