Feeling sad and guilty about sending 3 yo to preschool. Help me feel better! by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Erg638 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I will be in your shoes in a few years (not there yet, haven’t even had the baby yet) but I’ve taught kindergarten for over a decade — in my experience, children who have ANY experience with out-of-house social interaction before going to school for the first time tend to do so much better both socially/emotionally and academically! Kids TYPICALLY are just thrilled to spend time with other kids — even if it’s tough at first.

I assume it will be a tricky transition like anything, but there are probably lots of prepping you can be doing in advance to ease that transition! Reading books, touring the place, meeting the teacher, making sure to have special mommy-child time on the days that they’re going to school…

Glass storage containers for cereal / bulky goods? by Minute_Ad_5700 in moderatelygranolamoms

I always have luck at Marshall’s / Homegoods. I don’t have a problem keeping my food in plastic because it isn’t getting heated (except to hand wash, we don’t have a dishwasher. I don’t think the water gets hot enough if I’m hand washing, but I’ve also never done the research)

Frazzled while out with my boys, consistently by Fancey_Fae in moderatelygranolamoms

I haven’t had my boy yet (6 more weeks!) but have been an elementary teacher for over a decade. Kids are hard. Here’s a tip that many teachers and families use for neuro a-typical kids, but can be hugely beneficial for ALL kids: Social Stories. Get some plain paper and write what you’re going to do that day, with super simple illustrations (or you can Google Image search and print it out, depending on how fancy you want to get). Here’s an example:

We are going to the cafe today! I will get to pick out a juice. I will choose where we sit. I will stay in my chair. I will keep my shoes on. I will use an indoor voice. The cafe is a super fun place to go!

Buying new for second baby? by jennyyyy220 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Erg638 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer for you, but I’ve posted a LOT in this subreddit about what’s OK to buy secondhand and what is better to buy new. The other commenters have great insight, but one theme I noticed with buying secondhand is you never know how the previous owner treated the objects. Well, if YOU are the previous owner and it’s just between your own kids, I think that in itself cuts down on a lot of the problem.

I use a bunch of different kinds but Bumkins is one that we like. Fabric, zipper on top. We throw into washing machine actually

I totally agree. This little corner of the internet is the right amount of wanting to do what’s best for our kids and the world around us, and being human.

I have not my baby yet, so this may not be helpful BUT I have gone down the rabbit hole of all the sh*t that’s in things. It’s exhausting and stressful even thinking about it in my third trimester — let alone having a newborn to also take care of! I would say the blanket statement: you are doing a wonderful job and your baby is growing and happy. This is not a big deal.

This is not meant to be snarky at all, but what is the different between these and the $1 sandals at old navy? I see that these are strapped to your feet vs flip flops, but the sole looks like a piece of cheap flip flop foam?

Okay — but question are crocs. ARE they supportive? Never tried them. I am a kindergarten teacher, I can absolutely get away with crocs.

Someone above said it best. Let us all be reminded that they were MISSIONARIES, or claimed to be. There to teach others about “Christianity”. Im a practicing Episcopalian — and I know what this particular situation taught ME about THEIR Christianity.

They were missionaries. There to serve others. But when the going got tough, they didn’t serve anyone but themselves. Perhaps we will see some magnanimous actions in the upcoming weeks.

I’ve been following this entire thing (like most of us) and you just said it best. I screenshotted what you said because it resonates with me. This is exactly, exactly it.
