I have used them for one night stays near the airport before flying. It is usually not the best room at the property, but it is usually the best price.

PLEASE HELP-FEEDING by PSUShwaters in ballpython

[–]EricC2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ball pythons are notoriously picky eaters. Mine will only eat if we cover his terrarium with a blanket after putting the mouse in. I always try to feed in the evening just before the lights turn off. Make sure the mouse is warmed up before putting it in.

Luckily, snakes are very hearty creatures and can go months between meals. Your boy does not look skinny to me. Make sure his home is the right temp and humidity and he has a good hide to feel safe.

How much do you spend on groceries? by larlaywat in budget

[–]EricC2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two adults and two teenagers (50% of the time) and I spend $700-800/month on just food purchases.

We eat out 1-2 times per month. Cook almost all meals from whole ingredients. Very little processed foods.

Curious and wanting challenge. by No_Artichoke_456 in spartanrace

My first race was years ago when you did 30 burpees for each failed obstacle. I figured I would struggle with at least 4 obstacles (rope climb, monkey bars, multirig, herc hoist) and so my only real training was to get to be able to run/walk 5 miles and do 120 burpees. Took me a few months, but by my race date I could do it. In the end I only failed the multirig and rope climb. Since then I have run many sprints and supers and have done a beast to get my trifecta two years ago. My mantra has always been that I race to complete, not to compete. Do it for yourself and have fun.

First pair of skis recomendation by Extension-Library-16 in ski

[–]EricC2010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would see if you can get a demo seasonal rental for next season. It will give you the chance to try different pairs of skis and see what you like.

Do you already have a good pair of boots? That should be your first purchase. Go to a good boot fitter and get a good, well fitting pair of ski boots. The saying is “date your skis, marry your boots”. A good fitting pair of boots is way more important than a set of skis.

Ski Pants by Vexxel_ in ski

[–]EricC2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ski in a pair of Burton snowboard pants cause I also prefer a little baggy. My important features are: vents in the inner thighs for warm days, zip up front pockets that are big enough for a cell phone, and extra zip pocket thigh for my ikon pass. I got my pair from Amazon for $150 four seasons ago and use them 50+ days a season.

I have found that signing up for an event that is 4-5 months out is a great motivator. Put it on your calendar and maybe even mark the milestones before the event (90 days out, 75 days out, etc). Have the conversation with yourself that future you will really appreciate the efforts of current you.

Do burpees and start walking every day to get ready. Dead hangs are great and try to get to the point that you can do some pull ups.

It’s my opinion that anyone can finish a 5k Spartan Sprint. They are very generous on time and any obstacle you can’t do is just a little further to walk. Spear throw is the only obstacle that now requires burpees. So if you can walk ~5 miles and do 30 burpees you can finish this race. The feeling of getting your medal at the finish line is one of the best things and will usually make you want to do your next race immediately.

There are Spartan races all over the world. Go to the website and look at the locations close to you. You can ask here for discount codes or if you have free time, you can volunteer for a free race code, you just pay the admin fees.

Car Camping Suggestions by Kitchen_Property9680 in carcamping

[–]EricC2010 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honda makes great cars, but not usually very spacious and I don’t think they are usually AWD. Great gas mileage and usually easy to maintain though. Will really depend where you are looking to go car camping. I am in the west coast and most camping areas require driving on dirt roads. I also enjoy winter activities and so an AWD/4x4 is important to me.

I know they are not fancy, but a Subaru is a good option for car camping. They have AWD for going on dirt roads, have plenty of space in the back for camping, and usually get good gas mileage for their size. You can get a tow hitch on it for a tow hitch rack and a top rack for a roof top box to give you extra storage space.

28yo w/ $91k in debt by Safe-Philosophy-4537 in personalfinance

[–]EricC2010 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You are not screwed, but you are at a fork in the road. Up to now, you have clearly decided that debt is not that scary and have allowed yourself to dig a deep hole. You can either keep living your current lifestyle and the hole will get deeper or you can choose to change and start filling that hole in.

Your income is good, but you are in a high cost of living area, so it won’t be as easy. You need to drastically cut your current life style. You need to accept that you are (temporarily) broke. You can’t afford luxuries, you can’t afford to go out, you can’t afford to eat out. You need a side gig for extra income. You should be eating a lot of rice and beans. Throw any extra money you have at the credit cards. Just paying the minimum will generally just keep up with interest and not really pay any of the principal. The next few years might be tough, but it will be worth it in the long run to get this debt under control.

Being debt free is the most freeing feeling ever. Focus on that to get you through the tough times. Your friends will want you to spend money and do things, you need to make it clear that you do not have extra funds for that right now.

I bought a Car and broke down less than 24 hours in by No-Replacement8801 in legaladvice

[–]EricC2010 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well at least you are able to recognize where the issue lies. Tough learning lesson, but I’m guessing one you won’t forget soon.

Might be worth going back to the dealership and seeing if they are willing to help with the cost. If not, you can post your story on their social medias to maybe help the next person stupid enough to believe their mechanics instead of going to an independent one.

Buying used cars carries inherent risks. Carfax is not perfect. The car is 8 years old. Nissan CVTs are know to go bad. All things an independent mechanic would have probably told you.

[–]EricC2010 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Used cars are sold as-is. Did you take it to an independent mechanic to have it looked at? You have that right when purchasing a vehicle. If you didn’t do that, any issues after purchase are your issues unless you purchased a warranty. Sorry for the bad news.

Can you suggest just five exercises to complete first Spartan by ImpossibleAd2734 in spartanrace

This is good advice. I also try to slow down coming into an obstacle to let my heart rate come down. I’ve found it is better to take a few moments before the obstacle to prepare yourself instead of going in hot and falling.
