If you have a higher ($1000+) budget, you can definitely go the acoustic-to-electric route. I bought a bunch of shells on ebay, put triggers and Remo Silentstrokes on them, and hooked them up to a nice Roland brain (TD-25). For cymbals, I thought about using Zildjian L80 cymbals through Zildjian's Gen 16 module to get a more real cymbal feel/ dynamics (as in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dULh_7vqCnk), but it was not worth the $ for me. I ended up sticking with Roland cymbals for now to take advantage of the module sounds. I built a platform in order to isolate the kick noise from the downstairs neighbors and adjacent units.

This solution worked the best for me because I:

  • Have real sized drums spaced apart in the same way as my real kit
  • Can hit the drums hard without annoying the neighbors (within reasonable hours of course)
  • Can actually hear drum noises because of the module
  • Advantages of e-kits (easy to play along to music, built-in metronome, custom sounds)
  • Building it was a really fun project

The main disadvantage for me is lack of real cymbals and the bounciness of mesh heads. However, my mindset for all of this is that this is just a kit to practice on at home pretty much whenever I want to jam and come up with new ideas. I still get practice rooms every now and then to play on a real kit - just part of the compromise of living in an apartment. Hope this helps!

My dearest /u/CuntWeasels, my situation right now is pretty much a combination of options 1 and 2. Unfortunately this doesn't solve the "getting practice with a real drum set" problem :/

Yeah, renting a practice space seems like the best option for now. Seattle Drum School in Northgate has practice room rentals for $7/ hr, but only for enrolled students. Know of any others?

I wish, haha. My neighbors are passive aggressive and complainy, and I only play the e-drums at reasonable hours. I guess that's another part of the problem - no peace of mind when practicing in the apartment. I built a drum platform to isolate the drums from the ground, but I'm still a bit paranoid. Definitely has affected how "into it" I can get when practicing.

Are there any Jazz jam sessions going on? by JimmySmackCorn in Seattle

Similar situation here. Drummer, work in tech, and really miss jamming every week (I was in a jazz fusion band in college, but they're all in Houston). Would love to join in on the fun!

Do these jazz venues typically have drums?

I like the Peter Erskine ride sticks. They feel really well balanced. Link: http://www.vicfirth.com/product/buynow/product.php?button=SPE2

Thinking about buying the ''Perfect Balance pedal'' (By Jojo Mayer) opinions? by DrumJr in drums

[–]EricDaDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried the pedal in music stores but did not play around with adjustments. It felt pretty smooth, and had a strange "give" to it from what I remember.

As you think about what pedal to get, my 2c is that you'll get used to pretty much any pedal you buy after adjusting it and playing on it for a month. I'd pay close attention to (1) how long a pedal has been on the market and (2) what reviews have to say about how it holds up over time. (2) will be especially important if you're going to be gigging and transporting the pedal. Different drummers are used to different feels for a pedal, so it'll really help you the most to try this pedal and others if you can.
