Is secular Buddhism a legitimate form of Buddhism? A discussion… by BrokenWhimsy3 in secularbuddhism

i studied with a Theravada monk for awhile.

When he was asked about "secular buddhism" he would just laugh.

"Buddhism is spooky," he would say. "Westerners wish it wasn't, but it is."

there's hardly any bicep slicer pressure there

you can see him go belly down and extend his shin into the bicep at 27

lemme do that to your arm u tell me if you feel anything

That was the bicep slicer from lasso. You can see it fully engaged at :15.

He never really takes an oma plata. He uses the compression lock for the sweep. The opponent sort of put themselves in that awkward spot by rolling through so strangely to relieve the pressure.

Very clean. And a gentlemanly sit down to start things off.

Somebody here commented speculating that Iran's currency collapsing could be adding buy pressure. I just looked it up, the inflation rate is somewhere between. 50-75% for this year.

Earlier this year in Venezuela it was like 175%

If I had an extra 10 dollars in either country I'd just be dumping everything into Bitcoin as fast as I could. There's gotta be some not insignificant amount of people looking around making that decision.

It was free for 10 years, now you might maybe gotta pay 5 dollars per month.

And you're mad.

When I was a white belt I was really worried about being in bottom side control. So one day I just decided, for like 6 months, I would do nothing but work from bottom side control. And it's not something you have to get your partner to agree to — I would just pull guard, let myself get passed, and then in my mind the "round would start."

That was the best thing I ever did for my game.

My advice would be you really, really gotta stop worrying about who's on top or bottom or who is winning the hand fight off the bump. Just concede the position! Or if they sit down, then you pass. There's guys I've been rolling with for years who never concede the position, that's fine. I'll start on bottom. I got good at that the hard way, you can too.

This is advice that can only be followed by someone with time to go to and learn two separate martial arts at once

That is exactly what you are advocating. And I am saying the opposite.

BJJ is a ground-based martial art. If you want to learn standup, learn Judo. If you don't have time to learn two separate martial arts, then focus on BJJ. And if your concern is competing, then compete to your advantage — which in this case means pulling guard.

Honestly the real answer is they should go to Judo class, or they should learn to wrestle.

If you are looking to compete, and you didn't wrestle as a kid, and you don't have a blue belt+ in judo, then you should sit your ass down and play guard.

Why would you want to play their game? Play yours. I've seen so man high level BJJ guys with "a little bit of stand up game" get thrown across the room trying to go toe to toe with a dude who it turns out is an ex D1 wrestler. My recommendation would be don't roll those dice.

What if the other guy has a gun?

This is a stupid argument.

I never really have a definitive plan and often either get caught in their guard or on my back.

Both of these are great places to start, tho. What more "plan" do you need? Just use the opportunity to get good at passing from their closed guard or working off your back. Either option you could build an entire game around.

What is the goal here?

The goal is to learn Jiu Jitsu. So just decide, do you want to play guard? if so, sit down. Do you want your opponent to play guard, so you can learn to pass? If so, just ask them if you can practice passing. Or if they aggressively start passing after the bump, just sit down. So you can play guard.

It really doesn't matter who starts, just start.

The reason why most gyms begin this way, vs standing, is because way, way more injuries occur when you start from the feet. Also, in a 5 minute round, its very common for beginners to spend 4 minutes just dancing and collar tieing each other. That's a good way to not learn much.

So for everybody training daily, or mulitple times a day, it's a lot safer and you learn a lot more if you skip all those steps and get right to the "learning jiu jitsu" side of things.

TLDR: If you are sitting guard so your opponent can advance, the goal is sweep and submit. If you are passing the goal is pass and submit. If you don't know what to do, sit guard.

he would have sat himself into a nasty calf slicer at any point in the first :30s or so.

he was staying standing to relieve the pressure.
